There's also a bit of economics in this - the shows have to make money. Well, how do you quantify the shows making money? Ratings, DVD sales, merch sales and paying attention to a few sites/forums probably constitutes the lion's share of the research. A big chunk of the direct sales are going to be made to the biggest fans and those with the disposable income/will to buy those things, which are often the "otaku" Miyazaki is talking about.

Not every show has to pander to this crowd, but a significant percentage do and when that's the easiest course of action towards survival and generating new shows/concepts by some of the otaku turning from consumers to producers of new stories, that's what's going to happen.

I really do wish they relied less on the stereotypes and long-running fanon/canon of "this situation happens because Reasons X, Y and Z that you should know because of long-running fanon/canon". My all time favorite Japanese animated shows and movies really don't rely on them as crutches or sometimes, even at all. Sadly, I've only bought DVDs of the most recent ones due to finally having the disposable budget to do so and to chime in on on-the-bubble stuff while it's still being made, rather than years in the past like Bebop, Witch Hunter Robin, Ghost in the Shell, One Piece (which is thankfully king in Japan) and so on.

I do like the Daily Lives of High School Boys though. That shit is funny.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

HOLD. EVERYTHING.

New Fate/Stay Night. (Don't get excited yet...)

Spoiler

So nothing else this year (YES, THIS YEAR!) matters any more. Unless they announce a Darker than Black prequel, or a new season of Haruhi, this is the one. Total win.
(Sounds like it will be more like the Heaven's Feel arc too - HELL YEAH!)

from what i heard it will be heaven's feel and i do believe it to be confirmed so take that as you will. I just hope it will live up to Fate/zero but it being made by Ufotable does make
more hopeful because they have high production values and i've enjoyed most of there works and you should definitely check out the Kara No Kyoukai (TVTropes link) and it
takes part in the same universe.

I am certainly hoping it's Heaven's Feel, I just heard also that it was a new arc (which I believe has been debunked), and that it had new material in it (which I think is still true?). If ufotable does it well, and it's Heaven's Feel, it will probably be as good as Zero, or better. But I'm only hoping for much-better-than-the-other-version, honestly. >.>

Because the original F/SN was terrible. It looked terrible, the characters were terrible, and the mixing of the arcs was terrible. The Unlimited Blade Works movie was, if possible, almost worse. Mainly because it was a movie and what the fuck were they thinking? XD

I shall check out Kara no Kyoukai. I can't say as I'm much of a fan of the Nasuverse outside of the Fate stuff, but I've heard other people say good things about it, so I'll give it a shot. (Though confusion with Kyoukai no Kanata is likely...>.<)

yes F/SN was bad but we're taking about a remake from ufotable so there is hope for it to be good

psycho pass is getting a new season so is gargantia but them being urobutcher shows makes me nervous because he never did a second season

speaking of reboots there's a Legend of the galactic heroes remake in the works
Sailor moon is coming in summer if it doesn't get pushed back again

Im sure psycho pass will continue to be awesome in terms of setting, plot, references, lack of handholding and character disregard. This is the series that makes references to philip k dick and soren kierkegaard. (amongst others)

Also blanketman, mark the latest kill la kill episodes as "shit just got real". Amazing episode.

Is it wrong that I'd be really excited to see a SAILOR MOON reboot? I always liked the Japanese cut of the show.

nope I'm excited for the reboot myself because of nostalgia. It was one of the shows I grew up on like Dragonball,
pokemon and The X-files and I'd love to see them remade without 4kids in the picture.

I am. It's surreal as fuck and I love all the different aliens. They're such a breath of fresh air coming off Stargate's "all aliens are humans or humanoid."

Clearly, you don't realize just how much BETTER Fate/Zero was than F/SN.

Besides, if it IS the Heaven's Feel arc of F/SN, then it's by far the best arc and will be awesome in the hands of ufotable (who did Zero, rather than Studio DEEN who did the first F/SN and the movie of UBW).

I've started watching Battle Spaceship Yamoto 2199, anyone seen this and/or the original? It's interesting to watch, and I haven't watched a space anime since Cowboy Bebop so the change of scenerey is nice. The one really weird thing is that the two alien races both look and talk like humans. I figure there is going to be a good reason for this, like they are mind-controlled/parasited humans that were captured, but one of the comments on anilinkz seemed to imply that there was no reason for it and they are just human-looking for now reason. I hope that's not the case! Anyone who has seen it want to reassure me?

Perhaps the one show I cant really say I liked but I did enjoy. It weaves an elaborate story and theres a subtlety to the story telling I appreciate. particularly in the third installment Blood-C.
Guilty Crown
Not bad. I was put off at one point but its really one of the better animes of its season.
Shingeki no Kyojin
Priority in my opionion. Had a thrilling story and an excellent build in tension.

EDIT: I'd group tenjou Tenge and Witchblade in the boobs for no reason, "guy" anime category. Not great but once you get over the dirty feeling some team of men is out there trying to turn you on...they arent that bad. I think Witchblade had more potential than it delivered. infinitely more. Whatever you do, do not compare it to the comics.

@D'rek- Sorry have not watched much space anime. I find it hard to jump from epic sword fights to mechs and battleships. not sure whats wrong with me.

I'm watching Noragami. Its VERY interesting but borrows from alot of popular stories. theres some Bleach and Souleater in it. not at all hard to spot. I just find the characterizations alot more interesting. I highly reccomend.

Caught up on Kill La Kill. It's been raucus madness! I have to admit I REALLY am enjoying the direction the story has taken. Not sure If I'm liking this more than I did Shingeki No Kyojinn but its right up there. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan would be infinitely proud. Its just tons and tons of fun.

I saw the recent anime version - my comments are upthread somewhere.

The aliens look/talk like humans (some language differences) because there's some sort of "galaxy seeding" going on in which the humans and aliens all came from the same stock, but grew apart over the many thousands/millions of years. It's not ever directly referred to, but it underpins one of the important alien character's stated desires and actions.

This diaspora/reunification also makes some sense when you look at it from a Japanese nationalistic viewpoint - which the show intentionally refers to often and not in an ironic manner.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.
