Rurouni Kenshin is perhaps the most moving anime I have ever watched. The series is a bit tough to complete but I enjoyed the movies. Ending of the second one guts me every time.
Edit
Watching the trailer of the live action movie. wow. Definitely gonna try get this. wow.
Watched Clannad? XD
That's my benchmark. If anyone can claim something is more moving than Clannad then I either NEED to watch the show in question or avoid it for fear of an emotional breakdown. >.<
Beats me as I haven't seen Clannad. I will say with complete seriousness however, that when I watched Rurouni Kenshin for the first time in college in the late 90's, in some respects it actually changed my worldview (and has set some values I still hold today). I know it sounds crazy to say that about an
anime, but for better or worse it's true.
No more crazy than saying that about a book, or a movie, a sociological theory, or any other piece of human-created content.
anime gets less respect because it's animated, but I've yet to see that actually prove a detriment to any aspect of these shows, really. In a lot of ways, it gives a lot more freedom and control to the storyteller than working with live human actors. *shrug*

This.
Rurouni Kenshin changed how I saw people. Clannad is great and really moving in an RL setting but Kenshin hits you at a different, maybe more intense level? It questions what we know about feudal samurai and the culture of the time. theres great sword fighting so it satisfies the need for action while dealing with really heavy issues.
Well, consider it on my "to-watch" list, then.
