I think the list of actually dead people would be far smaller than the list of only mostly dead.

I know this is said in jest, but I'll answer just the same. The list of dead would actually be quite long, as scores of soldiers die in each book (often Malazan, but sometimes tribal people or whoever). And when I say "people" I mean characters that are actually named, often written as the primary POV at times.

In other news, it occurs to me that there are a bunch of characters like Feather Witch living on inside Icarium. Could someone list them (preferably with their original names if known)?

I think Rautos Hivanar was one.
It was ever thus.

True.

Taxilian is another. That's not his original/real name, but the only name we know him by (up until DoD; correct me if I'm wrong).

Silchas Ruin was never actually killed by Bloodeye. Just badly wounded.

Taxillian
Feather Witch
Taralack Veed
Last
Asane
Nappet
Sheb

edit: and i don't think taxillians name is ever revealed. you may be thinking of seerdomin in TtH, who's name is Segda Travos

Right. I figured he could be on the list because we, the reader, witness him dispatched and then seemingly doomed to lie forever in the grounds of an Azath House. If you're anything like me, you were pretty sure there's no better way for a character to return than to imprison them forever, but not necessarily everyone thinks that way.

So what do other folks say? Was Silchas Ruin ever apparently gone forever? Does he qualify for the list?

What about the folks within Dragnipur? They're dead but not dead right? Should we list them?

I would say that people imprisoned by Dragnipur are actually killed and their souls were chained to the wagon. So they make the list.

Wheras a lot of the characters buried in Azath houses were not actually killed, but merely imprisoned in a living state for eternity. Ascendents like Silchas, the Pack God and the Tarthenal Gods would fulfill that criteria. And Icarium if he had been put there. While his bear friend in Deadhouse Gates looked to be dying when he was taken by the House, that doesn't mean that the Azath kills all creatures it imprisons. The prologue of Midnight Tides says that Bloodeye does not have the power to destroy Silchas directly. So Silchas was not dead. Just wounded.

Okay I'll start with Draconus and Anomander. Anyone else in Dragnipur I should mention?

That reminds me, what happened to those two hounds of shadow that were imprisoned there? They escaped and, what, became hows of darkness or something? What were their names?

Others in Dragnipur: Pearl (the Imperial demon from GotM, not the Claw), Apsal'ara, Hood, Kadaspala and Anaster's mommy (and some other Tenescowri 'Mothers' of the Dead Seed).

The two hounds that Ganoes freed were named Doan and Ganrod.

Edit: typos

I wouldn't count Rake along with the other Dragnipur'd folks. He never returns, whereas the others (or at least we see Apsal'ara, Hood and Draconus) get spewed out when Dragnipur is shattered.
It was ever thus.

I doesn't matter if a character becomes all dead; as long as they were only mostly dead at some point, they still make the list.
