As we all know, there's a big different between all dead and mostly dead. The Malazan books use this to great advantage. I personally think it's fantastic. Sometimes having the character continue to kick around in some form is even more heart-wrenching than if they disappeared completely.

So I was thinking, I wonder if there's a list of characters from the serious who have returned from the grave in some form? I haven't found any, so I thought I'd start one. This post contains the compilation from this thread. Note that I'm including characters to miraculously survive or to fake their deaths, because sometimes these are indistinguishable from actual death by the reader. Please help me to include the form of the not-quite-deadness for each entry.

  • Toc the Younger - Poster child for death in the Malazan world. Returns include: That Portal Didn't Kill Me After All!, I'm Reincarnated in a New Body, and Undead Servant of Death and Friends
  • Kellanved - Ascended to become Shadowthorne
  • Dancer - Ascended to become The Rope
  • Toc the Elder - Old Guard hiding
  • Dessem Ultor - Old Guard hiding
  • Urko Crust - Old Guard hiding
  • Cartheron Crust - Old Guard hiding
  • Ferrule (Member of Dassem's First Sword) - Old Guard hiding
  • Whiskeyjack - Ascended but still undead
  • Bridgeburners - Ascended
  • Hedge - Died, ascended, then sort of mostly alive
  • O'nos T'oolan - Rare distinction of going to other way: went from partly dead to completely alive! Then he died again... then back where he started again.
  • Kalem - Stuck around in an Azath House.
  • Heboric - He was dead, but then he was a bunch of great big green hands, then he was a disembodied spirit floating in the void, and now his hands hold the most destructive power in the mala-verse. he aint never gonna die!
  • Rhulad - Cursed by possession of the Chained God's sword to be denied death's gate, so died many times but came back each time.
  • Brys Beddict - Murdered but then became unwater protector and then was summoned back to life better than ever (mostly).
  • Sandalath Drukorlat - Trapped in black rock, almost destroyed when Iron Bars threw her artifact into the sea, Chained God grabbed her and reincarnated her to torture Withal.
  • Silchas Ruin - We see him murdered and buried in an Azath in a flashback, but then he outlives the Azath and pops up again. (Debatable membership on the list due to the reader's knowledge that he doesn't die.)
  • Baudin - Used by Hood in undead form
  • Seguleh 2nd - Used by Hood in undead form
  • Cartographer - Used by Hood in undead form
  • Brukhalian - Used by Hood in undead form
  • Jacuruku commander fellow - Used by Hood in undead form
  • Greyfrog - killed by the 7 (or 6?) unbound T'lan Imass, but reincarnated in his own, though slightly smaller body. Like a butterfly (new Greyfrog) from a pupa (old Greyfrog)
  • Karsa's buddies: Bairoth Gild and Delum Thord - Live on within Karsa's sword
  • Coltaine - Reborn through crows in a new body
  • Duiker - Preseved in magic jar intended for Coltaine
  • Ganoes Paran - Murdered by Sorry (actually The Rope), saved and brought back to life by Oponn.
  • Rautos Hivanar - Died but lived on within Icarium's mind.
  • Taxillian - Died but lived on within Icarium's mind.
  • Feather Witch - Died but lived on within Icarium's mind.
  • Taralack Veed - Died but lived on within Icarium's mind.
  • Last - Died but lived on within Icarium's mind.
  • Asane - Died but lived on within Icarium's mind.
  • Nappet - Died but lived on within Icarium's mind.
  • Sheb - Died but lived on within Icarium's mind.
  • Anomander Rake - Slain by Dragnipur, but continues to exist within it along with all others chained to the cart with the gate of darkness.
  • Draconus - Slain by Dragnipur, but continues to exist within it along with all others chained to the cart with the gate of darkness. Spewed out when Dragnipur is shattered.
  • Pearl (the Imperial demon from GotM, not the Claw) - Slain by Dragnipur, but continues to exist within it along with all others chained to the cart with the gate of darkness.
  • Apsal'ara Slain by Dragnipur, but continues to exist within it along with all others chained to the cart with the gate of darkness.
  • Hood - Slain by Dragnipur, but continues to exist within it along with all others chained to the cart with the gate of darkness. Spewed out when Dragnipur is shattered.
  • Kadaspala - Slain by Dragnipur, but continues to exist within it along with all others chained to the cart with the gate of darkness.
  • Anaster's mommy (and some other Tenescowri 'Mothers' of the Dead Seed) - Slain by Dragnipur, but continues to exist within it along with all others chained to the cart with the gate of darkness.
  • Doan - Hound of Shadow slain by Anomander and imprisoned within Dragnipur, but later freed by Ganoes Paran.
  • Ganrod - Hound of Shadow slain by Anomander and imprisoned within Dragnipur, but later freed by Ganoes Paran.

If so, Kalam.
Laseen did nothing wrong.

Brys Beddict

Sandalath Drukorlat

Silchas Ruin

Err, does Kettle count? Going from undead to sort of alive except that it wasn't actually her being alive but the Azath doing funky stuff to her or whatever
It was ever thus.

Hawl is Old Guard too. And then she gets killed pretty quick after we see her. And I don't think the info ever gets back to Nok, which would be an interesting wrinkle to one of the most steadfast characters in the whole series.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Baudin

If you mean in the "Talon thought dead, resurfaces" way, then no, it was his dad that was a famous Talon and died (AFAWK) and his son showing up confusing people with their same name.

If you mean in the "dead but Hood found a use for him" way, then yeah, in which case we should also include the Seguleh 2nd and Cartographer. Maybe Brukhalian and the Jacuruku commander fellow (forget name) for good measure. They are all still dead, though... they just keep acting.

This.

I agree that they're still dead, and as you say not dead enough to lay still :(

I disagree with this. Hedge makes the list because we see him die in the series. The Imass started out dead, then some became more alive. If, like Tool, they then die AGAIN they'll make the list. :( Kettle is in the same boat, never actually dieing in front of the reader. I also don't think Crokus is ever thought to be dead by the reader, so he doesn't make the list.

In any case, I knew this list would be awesome! Thanks everyone, I'll work on compiling them in the first post!

I just thought of another one. What about Duiker? Didn't he get saved by a magic jar?

Some small remarks:

Karsa's buddies live on within Karsa's sword, not Karsa himself
Rhulad could be killed just like any other man, but he reincarnated in his own body again and again. He couldn't pass through Hood's Gate because the Crippled God kept sending him back to Wu, as long as Rhulad held on to the sword the Meckros Blacksmith Withal made for the Crippled God.
Sandalath Drukorlat was trapped within something (solidified dragon blood? Don't know about this one) but was freed by someone (Udinaas?) ... . Never mind, I can't remember about her :(

Sandalath, like all the Tiste Andii who were killed fighting the K'Chain in the Scabby/Silchas invasion, were trapped in the black rock stuff in northern Lether. Iron Bars and co. found a former posession of hers on the beach and tossed it into the ocean, which would destroy the part of her still in the rock. The CG intercepted her obliteration and made her alive again on his island to annoy Withal.

Amazingly, no-one's mentioned the very first character we're introduced to ... Paran.

He's killed a third of the way through GotM, and brought back.

Which is why I never understood later bitching about people not staying dead in the series. I mean, come on ... in GotM alone we get Paran murdered and revived; a dust-zombie as a main character, we see the realm of death, and the Raest jumps bodies when one gets destroyed. And in retrospect, Shadowthrone and Cotillion.
I finally have an avatar ... and it's better than yours.
