I just re read Prince of Fools. The way you give us time to settle in with Jalan before really getting into Snorri (through his broken retelling of his past) is great writing. It's genuinely good and I'm looking forwards to the next.

Prince of Fools would certainly have done better than Emperor of Thorns if they hadn't lumped the Paranormals into the Fantasy category. In just 2 voting rounds it got 92% of the votes that Emperor got in 3.

I eventually got Prince of Thorns for my birthday, and after finishing it grabbed the next two on kindle to power through. I have to say I liked them quite a bit, though there were parts I thought brought down the rest somewhat.

In particular the molestation backstory for Jorg pissed me off, in the insinuation that he's, at least in part, such a monster because he was raped - it's bullshit and agency-removing for female characters and it's bullshit and agency-removing for Jorg and other male characters. It wouldn't even have been that bad if it wasn't presented to Katherine as 'here's why I am what I am, hope this justifies my actions somewhat even while it doesn't excuse them'.

I'll still buy Prince of Fools in a short while though, and (probably) Prince of Clowns and Prince of Mimes when they're released.

I'm really surprised Slow Regard made it to the finals, mainly because its more of a novella then a novel and secondly because its very out there(conceptually) compared to the other books on that list. I guess its a testament to Patrick's reputation in the Fantasy game.
