I just got around to finishing this series, and I absolutely love it. I loved the dystopian-future universe, I loved the lead-up, I loved the glimpse of the Red Queen, I loved the end, I've pre-ordered Prince of Fools.

Good to hear!

The ARCs are in for Prince of Fools and I'm trying to give some away - a photo could get you one!

Have downloaded the trilogy to Kindle and look forward to reading it when I have finished my Malazan reread (may read something non-fantasy first after such a mammoth series but yeah "Thorns" is near the top of the pile!!)

Also nice to see an author talking to fans etc. ;)

Malazan re-read sounds like another way of saying 'in about a year' :p

I do a Song of Ice and Fire re-read before GRRM's books and that takes a slow reader like me an age. But I think Malazan has quite a few more words to it?

Luckily the Malazan series isn't that deep or complex so you can pretty much skim read the entire thing and not miss anything...

I'm a third of the way through King of Throns. I'm liking it so far - I want to see Jorg succeed.

Ah, the age old conundrum — should I keep reading something I don't enjoy in the hopes that my effort will pay off?

My answer would be "no". If you didn't get the first book then I'd give up.

However, there is this hilarious (to me) youtube review of King of Thorns by a guy who absolutely hated Prince of Thorns :p

Wait, is this the real Mark Lawrence?

I've just received book 2 in the mail. I hope it's worth it ;)

It's a good book, I can't wait to start on Emperor but I've got a pile of books to work through first. Strangely enough, I haven't been bothered by Jorg's acts of random cruelty or callousness but that memory with the dog was hard to read. I hate King Olidan as much as Jorg does.

Hmm... I dunno what to say really. I am enjoying Prince of Thorns, and I like the story, but... I just can't really get with the writing. I don't know why but I keep getting thrown out, maybe by the voice of Jorg - he seems pretty annoying, I don't know why anyone would follow him. I mean you might say that they do it out of loyalty to their prince but a)most of the brothers were bandits and were tortured by the Kings men so it's not like we have hardcore royalists here and :sofa: they seemed to follow him before they found out he was the Prince. Also, along that line, why didn't they know he was the Prince? He waltzed into the torture room and ordered everyone around and then freed the Nuban. That surely should have given them a hint. Add to that the point that he had the same name as the Prince... Also, why would they want to come back into the Kingdom considering the last time they were there they were all in chains and tortured? Yet they do so without really complaining at all. Finally, I seriously don't mind a violent protagonist, and on the whole I would prefer one who doesn't mind a bit of violence to a clear cut black and white "goodie" but why would he kill Gemt at the beginning just for questioning what he was doing? You don't get hardened warriors like that just watching it happen without making comment. I thought that was stupid and unnecessary, as it was already pretty clearly established that Jorg likes violence.

Having said all that... I am up to 75% through already and eagerly reading forward to find out what happens, so Mark Lawrence must be some kind of wizard because despite all my complaints, I am in it for the long haul! Didn't need to kill the Nuban though, that guy was my favourite! :)

If you continue the series, you'll get satisfactory answers to all your concerns IMO, as well as a more mature (without being NERFed) Jorg. In other words, Jorg has an honest-to-goodness arc!

This is a great thread and I successfully skimmed the spoilers, and saw Abyss spank the troll, and now I am ready to re-read Prince and buy King
HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. Whatever happens, this is justice. For me, this is justice. Vote HiddenOne Finally, I am at peace.

I'm gonna go on record (having not read ANY of the thread) and say that I think we are somehow in Europe but way past our lives now and humanity has somehow regressed to a pre-tech medieval kind of era. The "builders" could be us. I just wanted to make my guess public. No-one say anything though I want to see whether I am right or not. :sofa:

OK just finished Prince and overall it was a jolly entertaining read. I still have some issues with it - and one thing I have to say about the end is how come he told the Renar soldiers to attack Rike and Makin? I mean, yeah he keeps saying he will pay whatever price to succeed but Makin? And the next thing you know, he is King of Renar lands and he mentions Rike still being alive but no mention of Makin. He better be in the next book...
