Having read an excellent article on the atrocious running of Bungie during the Halo era, all the stuff happening with Destiny and Destiny 2 makes a lot more sense. The founders of the company are fundamentally incompetent at their jobs, but there's a lot, or at least were a lot, of really competent people working just below them.

Since finishing God of War I've been re-learning how to play Galactic Civilizations III with the Crusade and Intrigue expansions. It's a much, much better game now than it was vanilla.

Played some Destiny 1 today. I played the beta on PS3 and did not like it at all. But I decided to borrow it for my PS4 just to check it out, if nothing else to get an idea about the story and word before I check out Destiny 2.

Destiny 1 is not a very good game. Saying it's a terrible game would be dishonest I think. From another studio, maybe a mid tier one, this would be a fine first effort on a new franchise but as a game from Bungie? This is subpar bordering on embarrassing. The presentation is horrific. Very little story. Clunky mission structure. No real carrot or attempt at immersing the player.

Still there is a kernel there that interests me. The lack of story makes the game slightly mysterious and all those MMO trappings are curious. So many weird currencies and systems.

Are you playing the original, or with the Taken King expansion?

Because if it's the former, then you should know that tonnes was stripped out from the game and made available only if you have TTK.

But yes, the original campaign story is very poor. They entirely changed direction about a year before release, and various parts were cut and reassembled in odd ways.

Unfortunately, they seem to have done the same thing in Destiny 2.

Destiny actually has a really intriguing and deep lore, but very little of it made it into the games themselves. Instead, it's all in Bungie's game-external grimoire cards, websites, apps, and now webcomics (the last of which are bad and retcon a number of things for no reason).

Unfortunately x2, Bungie seem to have made it their mission recently to pronounce lore just 'rumour and folklore' so that they can pay no attention to it, and make whatever changes they want.

I borrowed the collection edition but I think I am playing the vanilla version because the rest of the content is downloadable and of course another user took the codes.

I think I will play to level 40 and then just drop the game but time will tell.

It definitely gets better with the expansions. The first one (The Dark Below) is kind of meh, but after that, Destiny 1 is a lot better. I was hoping Destiny 2 would follow suit. I'm waiting to see reviews about the latest expansion before I totally bail.

well, after about 4 hours, and a few reloads, I finally beat my childhood's best: I managed to beat Protoss 7 without cheesing it. I faced Red in a war of attrition with zealot and reaver drops accompanied by massed scouts; because I kept them on the back foot I was able to establish a (relatively) safe expansion; and when I was almost out of minerals at the expansion, I finally inflicted enough damage so that they stopped rebuilding effectively.

There's another 'toss 2 v 1 in "Trial of Tassadar", which is up next, but this time at least I get carriers to tech into. And then the last 2 against Zerg are relatively easier.

Edit: up to the very last mission now. Expecting I'll finish it this week, then take a bit of a break for rest of May, to focus on Hard reset and then AP, and get back to Brood War mid-June-ish
/Edit.

In "Hard Reset", after about 4 hours of playing, I killed the second boss. It's tough, and I die a lot (my reflexes were never great to begin with, and age isn't helping), but it's fun.

Since I'm contemplating picking up Vampyr close to its release date (contingent on reviews being not terrible), I'm seriously thinking about going back to "Alpha Protocol". I've been thinking on that for a long time, but this time I' think I'll actually do it. Might just start a separate thread to keep track of stuff there, since I wanna do 5 runs with diff builds, making decisions the way a char with that background should.

Picked back up with Atelier Sophie. It's not really a game I feel like I can sink long sessions into but it's nice to break things up a bit.

Also started Digimon World New Order. Seems... interesting?

Doesn't sound like Warmind was a hit from the impressions I have seen. Mostly just reused assets and confusing story bits.

Apt you are playing the superior of the Destiny games. D2 is in a bad spot. If the events still came to D1 I wouldn’t be playing D2 at all. I’m talking about PvP events.

I can't even play the crucible because I don't have Rise of Iron. The only active PVP options is 2 vs 2 matches which have no population. Pretty shitty update pratice.

I remember playing through Hard Reset on easy. The robots had a tendency of zerg rushing me, which was frustratingly tough. Not a great story but it sure looked pretty.

Currently playing Rime, COD WWII and Destiny 1.

I think I am about through Rime now. That game sure takes some big swerves in terms of level design and atmosphere. It's not a mindblowing game but I can definitely recommend it for the atmosphere and the novelty of the story.

Been playing WWII's campaign with a friend. It's really good. Well acted, great motion capture and the story is full of great moments and gruesome war sceneries. I can definitely recommend checking the game out for the campaign alone.

I continue to play an hour or so of COD Multiplayer every day. Really enjoying the new unlock system and the daily objectives and contracts you can buy. It helps insentivise different playstyles and trying out new modes.

Destiny is a chore but I did find the story on the Moon fascinating. There's so much promise in this game but it all just feels so hollow.

Yep. Everything I've read about Warmind has shied me away from buying it. While it has been getting a better reception then Curse of Osiris(not difficult), it still has issues. I haven't bought any of the expansions so far, so for me to play the next one, it will have to be damn near flawless and received with the highest praise from the review sources I depend on. TBH, I doubt I play Destiny 2 again.

I'm doing Normal, the way I usually do with these things. Majority of my deaths come from environment kills where I end up exploring where I'm not supposed to and just get a "game over" screen.

I like the gun system though- I have a 4-button mouse so I use the side buttons to switch weapon type and I can alternate the smart-gun with a shotgun/RPG mix. The only bots that can actually do bad damage are the little exploding bastards.

If there's one complaint I have about it is that I can't imagine fighting bosses without the smart gun alt-fire mode- and nowhere was I told explicitly to invest upgrades into it.

And yeah, that story... I'm playing a chapter a night, and trying to keep track of it, but it's not the easiest thing in the world.

I decided to have a look through all the PS+ games I've added to my library but not downloaded yet, so started playing Rime last night. Lovely look and feel to it but the frame rate seems all over the place on PS4.

^^ I also grabbed Beyond Two Souls while it's free on PS+. Quite enjoying it, but more as a movie than as a game.

I finished Rime last week. When I got the ending I am not sure I actually get the games premise as an excuse for the gameplay but it was very touching. Very pretty and atmospheric game, can warmly recommend it.

I've gotten further into Destiny and I think it greatly improved once some actual cutscenes and plot was utilized to give the gameplay context. Meeting the Vex on Venus and the Cabal on Mars was much cooler than the hive and fallen.

I love the Awoken Queen and her brother they have a very sinister dark elf quality to them.

Still playing COD WW2 multiplayer. I really enjoy the map called Shipment 1944. It's a tiny map so you can kind of re-experince the chaos of playing COD4 with the 30-40 man servers just on a smaller scale.

Oh good news. You've basically experienced the entirety of Destiny 1's plot. Not kidding, those cutscenes are the end of the story, and it doesn't resolve at all. Then you get two mediocre expansions (with like one decent cutscene each), and finally the Taken King - which actually does have a mostly coherent plot and some great cutscenes (lots of Cayde-6). But for vanilla Destiny, you've now finished the story content and cutscene content, essentially. Yay. :)

Back from the mini-vacation, and I dove right into BroodWar Protoss. Dark Templar + scouts- so deliciously OP against Zerg (so far).

Need to get back to Hard Reset, too and wrap that up. Maybe this weekend...

That's definitely how it's feeling. However in the mean time I seem to have gotten myself caught up in the loot upgrade grind. I am enjoying upgrading all my gear and weapons greatly

While I wouldn't recommend the game it is entertaining me. Come the fall, when what ever expànsion for Destiny 2 drops I think I might jump in.

Meanwhile I've been playing entirely too much shipment in COD WW2. It's all I want to play now. The chaos of that tiny map seems to have endless entertainment for me as I finish daily quests and challenges.

The grind is far far different in Destiny 2. In that, it hardly exists at all. You get so many legendaries and exotics for anything you do that you have to dismantle them as there's nowhere to keep them. On top of that, D2 doesn't have the same 'unlock perks the more you use a weapon' system - all perks are standard (no random rolls), and all unlocked straight away.

D2 got far better reviews than D1, but the problem with immediate reviews and 'games as a service' is clear for all to see with D2. It's designed as a game to be played every day, for hundreds of hours. But after the campaign, there is little loot and grind-wise to keep you invested, something the reviews did not pick up as they didn't play it for long enough to realise this.

Having said that, they are slowly making improvements in this field, adding more secrets, weapon upgrades, and crazier/more fun abilities for those weapons as of the second DLC. It is possible that the big September expansion will see an enormous improvement in this area.

That is strange to read. Seems like Bungie goes out of their way to worse design decisions.

That's because they're no longer Bungie. They are just Activision puppets for profit now, basically. All the people with both creativity and the stones to stand up for it have gone.

Finally finished AC: Origins. Definitely my favourite of all the AC games, will post more thoughts in the dedthread.

Am now playing Wolfenstein II The New Colossus. Only played a couple of hours (am up to the level where you're in New York trying to meet up with the resistance people) I don't know why I am enjoying this series so much but I really am! As I mentioned when I was playing the first one, I really don't play many FPS games because I find them repetitive and I'm not very good at them, but I am already hooked on this one! I imagine it isn't a *huge* game like the first one? Shouldn't take me too long to play through...
