I was in Barcelona recently and now I know what a certain someone did after his retirement from burning bridges; he got into the building trade

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Bertrand Russell

If you don't know your multiplications up to 10, your teacher did a shoddy job now matter how you put it.

All multiples of 9 have digits that add up to a multiple of 9. It's a quick test for division by 9 (and, obviously, division by 3)

Y'all are kill'n me. I know how to math - check. I just didn't realize if you did the 9 multiplication table that the numbers read 1 - 9 going down and then back up in the second digit. I thought it was kind of neat. Didn't realize my mathing rep would be in jeopardy here.

what StoneMonkey said. I'm amazed how few people in the West know this. We learned this in grade 3, I think, when our teacher explained prime numbers to us. We had to be able to say if a number was divisible by 2,3, 5,9, or 10 (and thus wasn't a prime number). The only divisor that doesn't have a reliable rule of thumb test is 7.

edit: lol, x-post

It's less impressive when you multiply 7 by 1443 and realise that it doesn't work if you are older than 99.

If you're older than 99 you've probably already done it and couldn't care less. :(
