Just finished the book. Loved it although not as much as MoI. Just had a couple of questions on Korbolo Dom's and hoping to get some others thoughts -

1) What he could be thinking that the Empress would accept him back after turning in Sha'ik? After betraying the Malazans in DG, how could he be deluded to think this is possible?

2) Was he truly the leader of the Talons? The impression I had up to this point was that the Talons was a force to be reckoned with, like the Claws. However I wouldn't think someone like Dom would've led them who seem to be not very highly thought of by his "allies" in the rebellion.

Thoughts?

It's been a long while since I read HoC, but I'll do my best.

1) Laseen doesn't really have much of a choice. After losing Coltaine and the Seventh, the Aren Legion and with the decimation of the Host, she needs armies and generals if she wants to keep Seven Cities.

2) I don't think he was actually leader of the Talons, he just used their reputation and stylisations. If he was, that would've made Baudin's task come from a very unlikely source.

Antiquis temporibus, nati tibi similes in rupibus ventosissimis exponebantur ad necem.

Si hoc adfixum in obice legere potes, et liberaliter educatus et nimis propinquus ades.

Er, MTS? I don't think he's even started MT yet, so you may want to alter your first answer a bit.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

The Talon has been fragmented into different groups since they were sabotaged and destroyed by the Claw. As Tavore reveals, there is a network of Talons that operate in relation to the Malazan nobles (Baudin is part of this network). There're others like Hawl who are hidden about here and there. Other fragments are seen in other books. Korbolo has a personal band of assassins which he calls Talons. The ones seen in late HoC are mostly from 7C tribes, but the origin of some is not given, and there is reference to older assassin/bodyguards that died defending Korbolo. His Talons operate in a way that Kalam immediately recognizes as the Talon style. So, IMO it seems Korbolo took in some surviving Talons after the Claw attacks to start his own Talon company, and even if the original ones are all dead now they train and operate in the same style. But, it does not appear that Korbolo has any particular link to the Talons working for the Malaz nobles.

OTOH, Cotillion says he's getting a sense of where the Master of the Talons is (Korbolo in Raraku) after finding Hawl... go figure.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

I always had them as a poor imitation inspired by some original members...

Follow-up Talon question - how is Tavore, Adjunct to the Empress, former leader of the Claws (enemy of the Talons) able to direct Baudin to protect her sister at the mines?

They came with white hands and left with red hands.
