A hand light as a leaf settled on Kalam's shoulder, and a voice rasped, 'Eyes forward, soldier.'
He knew that voice, from more years back than he'd like to think. But that bastard's dead. Dead before Surly took the throne.

A familiar voice and an "acid-spattered" face...and he's dead. OK, so what with all that's happening that night concerning the Dogslayers getting their, erm, just deserts from Raraku itself, it's easy to think he's just another avenging revenant making a one-off cameo appearance--except then there's this tidbit:

That damned captain went renegade. They found his body in Malaz City the morning after the assassinations . . . or something closely approximating his body . . .
Of course we've seen this song and dancer before with the Emperor's Old Guard, where there are no good deaths, only faked ones. So it prompts me to wonder if this "damned captain" is yet another member of the old conspiracy, travellering around undercover, keepering it on the down-low, hawling ass thru the warrens, living on crusts, stealing Sorry for himself...
Any way to know for sure who this dude is? (If later book just say 'rafo')
