Did my first read through a few montsh ago, just finished ggtm. I probably missed quite a few things on my first readthrough as just following all the characters etc was confusing at first.
Anyways, I keep hearing people mention WU. what is wu? And I still don't undestand how the Shake knew the Liosan were coming, like how they coincide arriving in Kharkhanas with the Liosan coming at just that time?
Yedan Derryg and the Shake Massive Spoilers, take care!

Oh and I agree with you OP.
The Liosan, everytime they were in the books, I always got the feeling they were a whole bunch of fluff but not much substance. Extremely arrogant to boot as well.

the again there were two camps and I think we have had the fluffers so far and the real hard core so to speak were elsewhere engaged and the fluffers tried a bid for their own glory.

Wu is the place/planet/realm where Malazan Empire is found, and where most of the MBotF story takes place.

also, the shake had no idea what they were walking into. yedan and yan tovis barely more. they abandoned 'Wu' once the seas started rising, returning to where they have supposedly come from, millenia in the past. the timing , imo, is down to plotting on SE's part.
There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line.

Basically , the battle is a re run of Agincourt (St Crepin's day for the 'red coats' amongst you).
The TL, similar to the french nobility, have superior number, superior quality, superior .... but most important they do have a superior ego (size of everest at least). So instead of focusing on the military operation, and accepting those who attack will always pay the 'butcher bill', searching sneaky way to bypass the choke point, they simply charge ('I see my ennemy, and by my soul I must charge him!').
We shall also remenber there is a choke point, not many to go to Karkanas, but by a specific point on the shore; so defense is easy. In such defense, will is what matter; as long as you do not yield ground, noone shall pass : thermopylae pass in human history is a good exemple of it. Even with 13 eleints there is not much possible if only 3 of them are able to fight (look in the return of the crimson guard, when the bridge is defended by 5 against 20 000 ... it is possible because only two fistfull of soldiers can attack in one time (and the defenders are awowed, bu if normal a hundreds would have keep the bridge against said 20 000!)
As for Yedan, human history is full of people who kept such choke point long enought to gain a strategic victory , even as the cost of their own life; as long as it is strategically a win, such sacrifice is worth (against Thermopyllae is the first exemple popping in the mind, but several others can be found).
His personality; well he is a soldier, his honor is to serve a higher purpose, protect something that is way more worth that his own life or the life of the other who follow him. He is not a commander, he do not even imagine stratefy can exist, his mindset is only existing for tactical act on the lowest level : HE must stand tall against the light, HE and nobody else,. because HE is the last one able to stand with a hust sword against the tide.
Somehow, he made me remender of 'barrages contre le pacifique' (The sea wall) from M. Duras (author of the lover, a movie in the mid 80'). There are things similar, despair, fate, destruction written is the very birth; deny of hope birthed into hope itself ... the real life of inadapted people infact!
