Hey, does anyone have any experience with having editors (professional or otherwise) edit their work? I have been looking into this and wanted to know if anyone had tried to hire professionals or gone down the other route of getting a freebie from students etc (which I read about as someone advising recruiting such via craigslist)

No, but I have an editor friend who's volunteered to edit my novel when it's ready :-) There are lots of scare stories on sfwa.net about freelance editors-for-hire who aren't worth shit, and I think it also has a list of people who have been vouched for by SFWA members -- might be worth starting there.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.
