I know there at least a few other people on this forum based in New Zealand, so I'll just pass on my best wishes to them. Hopefully all of your loved ones are well.

I'm fortunately based in Dunedin, and while we have felt some of the recent quakes, we were well removed from the effects. But it is sobering to see my flatmates frantically trying to contact family and friends up there. And this isn't that long since the 7.1 magnitude quake last year.

the last update i heard had the death toll at 65, and it's possible that may rise to 100 in the coming days!!

For an idea of the devastation i've linked to a few images, and a short video link..

Again, I pray that no one here is badly affected.

That looks absolutely devastating.

Hope all our NZ forumers are doing ok.

Hi, survived ok, as have most people I know. A few hairy moments trying to track down some people and family, but all safe so far. Work is based near the epicentre of the Sept 4, so we didn't get it as bad as in town, though very big and work was evacuated. Damage looks intense. We are lucky to have power and water. The aftershocks are rolling in frequently at the moment. My thoughts go out to those affected.

I'm fine, know a couple of friends who haven't checked in, but the phone and cell networks being what they are, I'm pretty confident that they're OK. Hopefully everyone down there gets back on their feet...this one is going to take a long while to recover from, I'm afraid.

And my sympathies and more to those who have lost someone in this...

Just goes to show that 'aftershock' is a horribly misleading term. :admin:

Thanks for your sympathies Lord of Light. I'm not in Christchurch either but like many others I have friends there. I haven't heard from all of them :admin:

Last I heard, the death toll is expected to rise to 200-300.

Best wishes to all you guys in Christcurch/Canterbury - just so appalling to see the devastation - visited there in 2006 so it is very vivid having walked those streets and visited some of the places that are now just rubble.

Fuck. That's terrible!

I hope the toll doesn't rise much further. Earthquakes are awful. Best wishes to everyone from there.

Just spoke to a friend of mine who was rescued from his 15th floor office by crane. I'm glad he and his wife are alright. Another friend narrowly escaped her workplace as it collasped around her.

Called my uncle who's down there on vacation, but no dice. I'm sure he's fine.

I hope your uncle is ok. Probably he's not even in Christchurch anymore. Visitors to Christchurch are being relocated via airforce airlift to Wellington. In Wellington they're mostly staying with local families who have volunteered the use of their homes. Unfortunately many left Christchurch with nothing more than the clothes on their backs, not even passports. Their accomodations were either destroyed or judged too unsafe to enter to retrieve their possessions.

Eh, he'll be fine. If he's anything like my father, he doesn't travel without 2 wallets, 3 forms of ID, and two hundred bucks stashed in his sock.
And if he's anything like me, he probably didn't even have to look for them, because they'd be in his pants at the foot of the bed, ready for a one-leg, other-leg ESCAPE! The only thing he'd likely lose is the sock-money.

Hey there Stormy, this link may be some help?

Not sure how extensive their database is currently, but it should get better as more people use it and give info

Hope you hear good news soon.

I've got relatives from Christchurch who are over here visiting atm. They're a mixture of relieved they weren't there, and also gutted that their house is probably destroyed. Don't envy them going back to that one.

Found this link to my friend's rescue by crane:

http://edition.cnn.c...ding.rescue.cnn

He's the first one to come out of the building, and the guy who goes back for his backpack at end.

Death toll is at 147 now, and a friend of ours ex husband is still in the CTV building, as far as we're aware. His name hasn't been released yet in any case. It's been a horrible week.
