That ring sounds like a must-have. I found the Elite Knight armour, but it slows me down too much at the moment. I stuck to farming Stone Knights by rolling around them, and killing trees. Also found the Wolf ring - what the hell does 'Poise' do though?

I upped my intelligence a couple of levels; it's pretty useful to have a couple of spells handy later on. I've put a bit into 'Resistance' too, as it adds 2 points of defence against everything - I haven't been poisoned for ages now.

EDIT Hah, now I see the advantage of Humanity - I got invaded! I was working through the Depths, when I get invaded by a nasty wearing spikey armour. I took him out, and I gained more humanity, and about 9000 souls! Nice. I hope he was suitably surprised.

I then went and took down the Gaping Dragon - awesome looking boss, i have to say. Which gave me a crazy amount of souls - enough to level 3 times in one session.

thats dirk one of the black phantom ai controlled guys. theres a few around the game and will only turn up if you havent killed that boss yet. supposedly farther on in the game you can find his armour.

getting through the bosses rightly now - finished the two belfry gargoyles, the moonlight butterfly, the capra, the gaping dragon, the undead dragon. up to level forty too and am about to attack quellagg for the second bell.

doing well there mate, didn't you play Demon Souls quite a bit as well? I think it helps loads if you've played the first one!!!

I had a nightmare on Friday...killed an NPC in error and basically ruined my game. Was up to lvl 67 and had put 60+ hours into it as well. I've also realised a pure melee build doen't work too well in the harder parts of the game.

Started a new char on Saturday and have flown through the game, got to level 40 after only 8 hours of play. Have gone with a spell-sword type character and have upgraded 3 weapons. to magic, fire and lightning +5. I've realised that upgrading the weapons is probably more important than lvling up.

Actually enjoying the game more on this 2nd playthrough!!

enjoying the game alot. not grinding much, so only bout fifteen hours in.

It wasn't ai controlled, it was another player using a red orb to invade. Had a couple now, happens when your humanity is high enough - anyone can invade anyone else if you have the right orbs, and the server actually connects you. I managed to invade once, but other attempts failed and I lost the orb too, which sucks, as i don't know where to get more.

I've now got Havels ring, and also took out the Hydra. I've been farming those blue wyverns in the Drake valley - but there are definite glitches here as they sometimes disappear into solid rock, and vanish from the game, without leaving any souls or anything.

I've only recently discovered that levelling up armour makes a huge difference. Some doesn't even add weight as it levels; it just gives higher def, with little or no penalty. And if you level several items, you can get a huge boost to your defence without pouring souls into it.

Anyone beaten the Stray Demon yet? And what/who do I need to add fire/lightning to a sword?

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

You have to be in human form for someone to invade you. Players can invade you for a number of reasons:

  • They're part of the assassain covenant and are after your humanity
  • You venture into Darkroot Garden in human form without being part of the convenat of the forest
  • You are hunting down the guilty - Darkmoon covenant (thats who I'm with)
  • They are after your dragon scales - Dragon covenanat
basically there are 9 covenants and pretty much all of them allow you to invade another persons world for one reason or another, which in turn lets you level up within the covenant to get some awesome items.

The Stray demon is similar to 2 other bosses in the game, there quite easy once you get the tactic down. Just keep pressing into there stomach and they will float into the air, you take a couple of steps back, turn around and block, attack a few times while it's dazed and rinse and repeat.

Picked up a couple of quality rings last night:
Fog ring - human invaders can't lock onto you in PvP and monsters barely see you
Dark wood grain ring - changes your roll action into flip and speeds your movement speed up by 25%

Also upgraded a Scimitar +10 to a Queelag's Fury Sword, man that sword is epic. does chaos damage and scales with however much humanity you have on you. managed to upgrade that to +4 using demon titanites and it now does 90 physical damage and 225 magic damage.

You have maxed out that sword my friend. Unique named weapons can only be upgraded to +5

I've been so engrosed with Dark souls I've almost forgotten this Forum existed xD though my shippment arrived about 1.5 weeks late I've been giving it my all. level 52 or so, was building a tank type character then I decided i'd try some lighter armour and Oh man does it make a difference, now able to zip around in pvp with so much more ease. gained a few Pyro spells and efficient with bow and arrow, I tend to play an all round class adaptable to most situations. absolutely loving this game, just took out the Hydra and golden Golem. yet to make my way into blighttown, that place does not look like fun.

Just a quick question as I am inevitably going to buy this game.

Is this a game where specific classes dont matter? What I mean is judging from your post youve been blitzing the game and gotten to a fairly high level and are now an 'all rounder' style of player, with a blend of all types of combat (vague statement because ive never played it). I actually prefer games were you pick a specific class and run with it rather than been able to adapt it to anything and any situation. Do you just get to a certain level and have the ability to max out any character skills/abilities. Like if you played as a mage the entire game because you chose a mage class then just decide to change to a tank is that possible?

Very rambling post thanks in advance. Having never played this you people are making it sound epic. Damn my lack of funds

The character classes start with higher stats in those areas they specialise in, basically giving you a head start for them. If you carry on adding to them, you obviously get a powerful mage/warrior or whatever, but when you level up you put souls into whatever attribute you like.

The thing is, if you start with higher magic/intelligence, it's going to take a LOT of souls to suddenly 'change' to a tank - you will be able to add more to melee stats, but you're never going to achieve a total turnaround, as every time you level up, the price in souls goes up. So later in the game, to get enough to change your character round will cost so much time and souls it makes more sense just to restart with those stats already boosted, and add more to them instead.

This game is epic fun - I love the structure, and the fact that at present is just seems to be going on... and on. It's also great being able to wander back through previous areas, taking out everything in sight after a few upgrades. I just found a great place to farm souls, so I'm levelling up, boosting armour and weapons, and investing in expensive rings and such before I move on.

@SR - sound like the area I'm in - if you go up the ladder to the left of the Hydra, by the waterfall, there is an excellent area for farming souls. Best if you get the Crest to open the gate through to the Bonfire though - well worth the 20,000 souls, which I made back in 5 minutes!

Going for Wolfy next.

Traveller pretty much summed it all up there, but yeah, basically because I'm going for an all-rounder, I really don’t stand out strongly in any one field. just enough to be able to adapt to most situations, most my magic is pretty weak and Its mainly there as a fall back option or some minor buffs, the heavier the armour is the slower you move, so I wear lighter armour but use a huge shield. so I'm fast and still able to block and dodge easily enough, plus wielding a 2 handed sword with 1 hand so my damage output is still impressive can't go wrong with a bow and a couple hundred arrows on hand either to try whittle some beasts down before charging in for the kill, so far I've only been beaten once in PvP by a heavy magic spammer lol so I'm pretty happy with the build I came up with. Most my stats are in Strength - Endurance - Dexterity and Vitality, with just enough in intelligence and faith to be of any use.

Yeah, I use different strategies for different situations - you kind of have to! I'm generally a melee build, but I use arrows to lure things out, and I''ve put a lot into the pyromancy flame, because it's awesome and doesn't need loads of stat building to use. (I used it to take down Sif on my second attempt).

My lowest stat is Faith; but I've boosted intelligence enough to use some handy spells, like the fall control and poison heal. The only problem is that some of the great swords later in the game require a high Faith to use, so I may end up boosting that up just to use them.

I'm using heavy-ish armour, but Havels Ring and a high endurance keeps me rolling around, with the option to lighten up for long jumps.

Like Demons Souls, it's the Rings you're wearing that can make a real difference.

I've just made it to Anor Londo, and have been fighting my way through a Painting world. I love the way all the areas are so different; a lot of effort has gone into making new areas look genuinely new, so things don't get samey. (And dammit, Mimic chests?!
Fight you're way past several nasties, beat the traps, get to the chest - which then EATS YOU!)

I shoot an arrow into every one I see now... just in case.

Its sounds really good and I like how you can farm to get ahead of the curve but really you just need it to stay alive long enough to carry on rather than being omnipotent :)

I must buys this at some point but with SkyRim round the corner Ill probably buy it later and necro this thread when its no longer relevant

There are Mimics?! Awesome!
I haven't seen them in a game since, what, Dungeon Siege 2? They amuse me, and now that I think about it are definitely the right sort of mean for this game :) Are they really powerful in this like they often are? And do you tend to get really awesome loot from them?

Yeah man they can deal out some massive damage and kill in one hit if you get caught...they have pretty weak HP though. And yeah you do get some pretty awesome loot from them!!!

Was getting cheesed off with this last night.

In this 2nd run through I'm doing I'm concentrating on lvling weapons and obtaining all armour, ring spells etc...Have collected all magic and pyro, working on the miracles.

I've decided to stop lvling my char at lvl61 so I can concentrate on collecting Humanity to upgrade to the 2nd lvl of Darkwraith covenant so I can get the unique armour and sword from them. I need to collect 30 humanity and so far I think I've done about 20.

Was trying to get summoned for ages but with no luck. Tried arnor Londo, crystal cave, demon ruins before centipede demon. Finally got summoned at demon ruins go to defeat the boss and the summoner gets killed in one hit!!!
Moved to Anor Londo and get summoned again after maybe 30mins and the summoner hasn't even opened the shortcut to the boss!!
This next patch can't come soon enough...it's supposed to fix these pvp issues.

Any of you guys around lvl60 and successful at getting summoned...if so where???

p.s. still one of the best games I've played in years though!! :-)

Doing this very slowly, around 20-30 minutes a day, basically trying to make my way from one bonfire to the next, discover it's surroundings then squat down again.

Yeah, I laughed when I first got caught out by one, as the last game I saw 'em in was Balders Gate 2 on the PS2. I think I may have stopped when I saw how much damage it had done when it finally spat me out. When you survive certain encounters, it's well worth checking your armour, as it's usually in shreds. And yes, they are pretty nasty - if you get caught. I fire arrows to check now, and set fire to them if they start to move!

@Hocknose - I'm around level 60, and when I'm in human form I do see a few summon signs around the place with hopeful people standing there, but I haven't tried actually getting summoned myself. I played Demon's Souls offline, and although I like the bloodstains and messages, I haven't really explored the multiplayer - I'm quite happy hacking through on my own. I particularly like the way that when you sit at a bonfire, another player might be there... you have a few moments of knowing there is someone else out there, doing the same part, without a load of inane chat to kill the atmosphere.

So I wouldn't know about pvp problems, or patches - I've had no trouble with it so far. When I'm human, there always seem to be summon signs round boss areas, so I've always assumed it's there if I want it.

@ Tapper - keep at it, it's really satisfying reaching the shortcut points that open the way back to a previous safe zone.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.
