Okay watched it now. Great ep. Some nice nods to the previous series, and a fairly interesting intro to the new series. Aside from some moments of Mekhi Phifer overacting it was really good. Great to hear Murray Gold's TW music again, and see Russel T. Davies and Julie Gardner back in fine form!

Just nice to have TORCHWOOD back after such a lackluster season of DOCTOR WHO.

Hmmm, I'm undecided about this after the first episode. I found the overacting rather distracting, and I am disappointed Jack's return to earth hasn't been justified, he left under such terrible circumstances, I would have liked to seen a little bit more on why/the pain of him coming back.. Maybe that is coming, but I would liked to have seen a little more in the first episode.

it's pretty easy, if you have watched season 1 of DW. last 3 episodes of season 3, last 2 of season 4. That's it other than season 1.

Just watched it. Enjoyed it. Only gripes really were Mekhi Pfifhfhfhfhfhfhr's (Sp??) overacting, and Bill Pullman's strange vocal affectation. Other than that, it looks nice, and feels like a much bigger production than TW did when solely on the BBC (good use of that bigger budget I guess). Hopefully they've kept this storyline tight, and will conclude it properly (a la "Children of Earth"), rather than obviously trying to set up a long running series.

I still haven't seen Children of Earth. Deplorable, I know.

The Doctor's Wife
made it all worthwhile. If only there was a way to get Gaiman to pen some more eps... That was possibly my favourite episode ever.

I'm looking forward to Stephen Fry's episode next season, if the rumours about him writing one are true.

Indeed. Gaiman's ep was certainly the best easily.

Yeah, I guess TW: Miracle Day just made me remember what sorts of things RTD brought to the show and makes me an even bigger fan of him and Gardner.

I truly feel like Moffat is firing off on some personal agenda and that while mysterious and interesting to him...and somewhat to the rest of us...the episodes just don't seem to hold up on their own on any real legs.

Other than Gaiman's ep, where's the MIDNIGHT's, DALEK's, LAST OF THE TIMELORDS's and WATERS OF MARS's this season? It's like one long inside joke that we haven't gotten the punchline to yet and may not get the whole punchline to this season.

I honestly used to think that since COUPLING, PRESS GANG and most of his RTD-era Who stuff Moffat was the best writer on TV...but now I've started to wonder.

I agree, really. Moffat was my favourite TV writer in the RTD era, but his eps since taking over the show have not, IMO, been as good. I was overjoyed when I first heard that Moffat would helm the show, but now I don't really care if he stays or leaves. My problem with Nu-Mof is partly that, as you say, his episodes don't stand up so well on their own. I also never really became that invested in the on-going story he's spinning, and the onslaught of puzzles and mysteries is getting a bit tiring.

Unless MD has killed off Gwen in the first scene of the first episode, I'm not sure how worthwhile it can possibly be to stick with it. Jack is great and all, but not nearly a balance for that walking, talking personified black hole.

Oh I like Gwen. LOL

That said, I have a notion that like Ianto, Toshiko and Owen before her Gwen might bite it this season...she's already lasted longer than any previous TW employee other than Jack.

It's true that I'd rather watch just for Jack. though concerning Gwen, if Mekhi Phifer doesn't up his acting game from the ridiculous overacting in the first episode then I am afraid he might steal Gwen's thunder. LOL

Like I said, so far only Phifer is annoying me....he just seems so fake.

I'm just hoping they keep Gwen in it to retain someone with a welsh accent. I'm curious how it sounds to viewers from the US or Canada, or further afield. Cos down here in New Zealand I've had people regularly mistake my (very) southern Irish accent for Scottish which seems almost impossible for me to comprehend.

I would assume the welsh accent is sufficiently different to stand out against the other british regional accents?

Ah, so episode 2 fixed most of the stuff that I didn't like about episode 1, up to and including Mekhi Phifer...he seemed to have come down to earth again and acting like a normal actor. A good episode, and though the overall macguffin plot didn't move fwd much it was nice to see Jack in a situation he's never been in before and gwen dealing with that. Looks like the new TW team will be fully assembled and working from somewhere clandestine on episode 3. Enjoying it so far!

Guh...4 episodes in and I'm unimpressed and totally bored. This show needs to pick up like yesterday.

I am still watching, though it was, at times, painful.

Last episode was definitely the best, imho, but it felt so disconnected from the previous ones that it does make me wonder how much of what we've seen up until now (Oswald and Jilly's storyline in particular) will really be relevant in the end.

Anyone else think this season might be better if it had been compressed into five episodes like CoE?
We might not be free, but we sure are cheap.

My co-blogger Chris is still watching, though on our podcast we'll be putting up on the site tomorrow, we have some slightly harsh overall opinions on it. I gave up on it after ep 5. If at 5 episodes it hasn't won me over this season...it's not going to.

Yeah, I've stopped watching too. It was simply horrible, which is sad since Children of Earth was friggin awesome.
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

Okay fuck.

I hate to go back on my word, but after I stopped watching...Chris went on and told me I ought to watch episode 7 ...

...I was curious, but not excited to watch it.

Sweet merciful Jeebus and other gods....

This show just did a 180 and the show I remember it being from the CHILDREN OF THE EARTH days showed the fuck up.

This is mutha fuzukin' TORCHWOOD!

Gods, if you told me that at 7 episodes in after boring me for a few that TW would win me back in spades, I'd have questioned your sanity and my own....but damned if it didn't.

This episode had EVERYTHING that you want from a TW episode and it's almost 85% Jack, 10% Gwen and 5% newbies (and even THEY are finally good)

BAsed off this one, I am totally IN for the remaining 3 episodes. Sold.

Damn. I hate going back on my word. LOL

Could I watch episode one and then skip to episode seven without missing too much?

LOL, you could probably watch ep 1, and then trawl the reviews at my site for eps 2-6 and then watch 7 and you'd probably be okay. LOL
