Since there is no thread about this, the forthcoming BBC/Starz co-produced 4th Series of the DW spinoff...I thought I'd make one and see what people were thinking of plot, and casting details so far...

Posted Image

Russel T. Davies and Julie Gardener (Torchwood creators and 2005 - 2009 Doctor Who) are still running the show and now they have some writers from Buffy and Lost joining the crowd.

Cast:

Actor Character
John Barrowman - Captain Jack Harkness
Eve Myles - Gwen Cooper
Kai Owen - Rhys Williams
Mekhi Phifer - Rex Matheson
Alexa Havins - Esther Drummond
Arlene Tur - Dr. Vera Juarez
Bill Pullman - Oswald Danes
Lauren Ambrose - Jilly Kitzinger
Tom Price - PC Andy Davidson
William Thomas - Geraint Cooper
Dichen Lachman (Sierra from Dollhouse) - TBA
Lena Kaur -Dr. Alicia Patel

Plot:

"The plot of Miracle Day is the most explosive Torchwood storyline yet. One day, nobody dies. All across the world, nobody dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next, people keep aging - they get hurt and sick - but they never die. The result: a population boom, overnight. With all the extra people, resources are finite. It's said that in four months' time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can't be a natural event - someone's got to be behind it. It's a race against time as C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy. The answers lie within an old, secret British institute. As Rex keeps asking "What is Torchwood?", he's drawn into a world of adventure, and a threat to change what it means to be human, forever."

I like that Starz has this, it seems a fit for the violence, shocking subject matter and nudity the show requires....I also like the casting of Mekhi Phifer, as that guy can act! I know nothing of Alexa Havins...but she's hot so I'm cool so far. Bill Pullman playing a charismatic pedophile who was destined for death til the Miracle Day...seems uncomfortable...but then this is Torchwood.

That we still have Barrowman, Eve Miles, Kai Owen and even Tom Price makes me excited, because they are the core of this show now and the American's can only add to the ranks in interesting ways. I think what I am especially looking forward to is that this show is going to do what a lot of other supernatural shows can't do...and that is make this thing feel more global. I think that after the Children Of The Earth storyline that this is the best way to move forward...with this old, secret British institute...sorry, but that just gives me goosebumps.

but then I love all three series of TORCHWOOD so far, so I may be a fanboy....

Oh this is good news. Plus the fact that it is also a stars production means that I should be able to see it here at the same time it will play on the bbc. In the past we have had to wait a bit. This sounds great. :w00t:

Supernatural/Aliens/time travel/immortal awesomeness..

It's a great spinoff of DOCTOR WHO (pssst, you are thinking of Deadwood)

Use of this word is certainly up for debate... Doctor Who covers its general laziness and cheesiness because it's genuinely entertaining. Torchwood lacks the laughs and, frankly, has exactly the same problem as The Sarah Jane Adventures, which can be summed up in two words: No Doctor. Doctor Who without the Doctor has completely the wrong tone to be successful...

And yet they've not only done 3 series (Series 3 Children Of The Earth being the best), but the 4th is going to be a cross border show...there must be something there....

That said, I understand that it took two seasons for the show to FULLY find its legs and figure out what it was...and to me that is the serious side of the universe threats that DW deals with, the dark dingy corner of that world if you will....but by series 3 I feel that it not only found its legs but produced one of the best sci-fi miniseries in recent memory on television, and won a Saturn award for it. IMHO anyways.

But yeah, subjective to each viewers' thoughts. It's not a show for everyone.

I haven't seen the first two seasons of Torchwood and from what I've heard, I don't really mind.

But Children of Earth is brilliant. Like really genuinely brilliant. It's only 5 eps but it's as good as Battlestar Galactica at its best (though lacking the action chops, maybe the bigger budget will help there for this one). So I'm looking forward to this.

I'm disappointed that Enver Gjokaj isn't in it as he was rumoured to be though.

Children was great. I saw that mini and then netflixed the first two seasons. Children was the best of the bunch. It was so good that my wife actually watched it. Which she doesn't always do for the doctor.

children was a great mini series, and i really liked the previous two series. admitidly there was one or two episodes that we plain aweful. just an excuse for barrowman to get of with somebody...but there were other episodes that were really good.

Dr who (which i love) tends to be a bit to lovey dovey, TW is alot darker, a lot more serious and deals with more adult themes.

cant wait till it comes out.

Here's a set pic with the original crew (AKA Jack, Gwen, Rhys) and newcomer American CIA agent Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer)

I like the premise. I've seen the first season of torchwood, but thought it was a poor man's doctor who. You guys have convinced me to start watching the show again, but skip straight to season 3 and then 4.

i agree with QuickTidal. You should definitely watch the end of season 2 before moving on to Children of Earth.

While Torchwood suffered from some serious quality control lapses in season 1, season 2 was a much better effort. They seemed to get more comfortable with the style and direction they wanted for Torchwood, rather than being a Doctor Who spin off. But Children of Earth is where it really got to stand on it's own.

Yep. Totally. I have hopes that Season 4 will be as good or better than season 3.
