Spotted these recently. THE BREACH and GHOST COUNTRY, both by Patrick Lee.

Friend recommends as a good fast time travel adventure action read type thing.

Mounds of glowing reviews online.

Anyone here have an opinion?

Sounds interesting. Not read it, but I DO like time travel.

These floated across my radar over at LibraryThing at few months ago. They definitely sound interesting. I'd be interested in hearing what fellow Malazites think of them.

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

...and if Abyss wasn't my pusher before (Dresdencrack), he sure is now.

Went to Chapters to get John Scalzi's THE LAST COLONY, and saw GHOST COUNTRY by Patrick Lee, looks good, and is endorsed by James Rollins himself on the cover...so I was sold and I bought it.

Will let you know how it is Abyss. :p

But i see elsethreead that you went and got THE BREACH too, so all is well with the universe.

I went and got both. They are now designated beach-reading a few weeks from now.

I deally they're awesome and we send hordes of malazfans to acquire the books (see the Dresdencrack and the coCaine). Or they're crap and we save people from the waste (see: The Last Templar, or rather don't).

- Abyss, ...yes, will be reading THE BREACH on the beach...

ummm... the books are endorsed by Rollins. I like his Sigma books.

And it involves.. time travel ...and/or alternate realities. Those are cool.

Plus guns! Who doesn't like guns?

I've read them both, they're pretty good books entertainment wise but nothing that will stick with you for too long. The main plot device/macguffin they introduce is very very cool and very very spooky in it's potential for mayhem. The books follow the usual thriller type plot and the characters aren't annoying as well as not super human which is nice. Honestly, I'll keep reading the series just to see what gets spit out next. (Once you read 'The Breach' you'll understand what I mean by that)

Thanks for the quick endorsement! I have both ready to rock in the next few weeks.

Okay these were awesome. I won't spoil but i will recommend these as great fun reads.

Seriously action junkie big screen ka boom fuck you in the thinkymeats great fun superfast read with a couple of genuine That Did NOT Just Happen moments.

I described them to someone as a three hour episode of Fringe written by Nolan and directed by Bruckheimer with a HUGE effects budget, in text form.

It's rare that a sci fi action thriller novel can deliver that level of thinkymeatz strain and not get too far into the sci fi elements of it but Lee gets around that nicely. I'm reminded of Asher or Morgan without getting as far into the 'howzitwork?' of the relevant widgits.

The central conceit of the books - that there are these items, don't know what they are or how they work but they do cool stuff - is fine unless you're the kind of reader who needs to understand how everything works, in which case the books are likely to be more frustrating than anything. I actually like how Lee just urges the reader to 'go with it' because that's the situation the characters are in.

The characters themselves are not overly developped but nicely archetypical and a reader may not care about them but will likely care what
is happening around them.

I'm on board for whatever Lee writes next.

Oh man, I have them both still waiting for me to read. I was holding off till my vacation to Cuba in April...perhaps I'll up them in my reading order.

That said, I read a few pages of THE BREACH to check it out and just that description of the "missing" thing inside the plane had me a little bug eyed from awesome.

Looking forward to it now!

I have to say they were great vacation reads. Hard to put down at points but really easy to pick up again.

I just finished Ghost Country last night. It took all of two long sessions to get through the whole book. Lee's style is not bad, but a bit more abrupt than I'm used to. I get the sense that a lot of thriller authors have the same sort of style. In any case, not a bad book at all especially since I didn't want to put it down until I figured out just what the hell caused all the problems leading to the "ghost country" in 2084. A bit of a letdown and no shortage of questions after I was finished.

If anyone else has read these books, or just Ghost Country, please email me as I don't want to post the questions here and potentially spoil things for others.
