Spiderman (remake/revamp) re-launching the story

I have always felt the reason he got so popular was that his struggles in high school were so easy to relate to. I concede it is unlikely he would hook up with someone as hot as Gwen Stacy, but dealing with the ladies was an important part of his character. You can contrast him really easy to Batman (or Iron Man). Bruce Wayne really wants to be Batman. Everything he does is somehow related to being batman. Peter Parker has doubts about being spider-man because he wants to be normal but feels he has a responsibility to use his abilities for good. Him trying to balance his personal life and his crime fighting was one of my favorite elements of the stories. They totally messed it up in the 3rd movie though...
thats my 2 cents anyway.

Cammed trailer...

My thoughts...I think the excessive POV camera work is just for the trailer reveal..I hope at least...other than that it's hard to say much beyond that it looks to take a more realistic take on Spiderman than the Raimi movies did...which can only be good I think.
Is this our Nolan-ish style Spiderman rooted in realism? Hard to tell at this point.

Okay, here she is, official and in HD. So far the only thing to note making this look any good is the realistic tone and the fact that it is goingt o be mostly practical effects work and not CGI for spidey...an aspect I truly like since it's the shitty gummy-looking CGI that was one of the things that ruined the Raimi ones (above and beyond Raimi's direction and Mcguires piss acting.)

I'm fairly certain it's only done for the reveal at the end in the mirrored building and so we don't get to see full out spidey web swinging ...yet....
It would be a pretty boneheaded move to make it happen in the film more than once. But I think it's a trailer scene only. At least that's my hope.

Okay, I wasn't sure if I was on board for this reboot...but the full length trailer just debuted...and I'm in. I'm quite in. This looks like it takes all the campyness out of the Raimi films and gives us something a little more serious with a cockier Spidey, more practical effects for the web slinging, and the tone looks a little more realistic.
Consider me there...and consider me excited.

Meh. I loved the first two Raimi movies. This revamp is completely unnecessary. Superhero movies are getting about as dumb as the comics with all the rebooting. No reason they couldn't have went to a Spidey 4 with the new actor.
Let's not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. I want new stories please.

OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Rebooting is necessary when the original director effed up the character and a new person comes along to fix that damage. See Nolan's BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT.

I wasn't especially keen - I liked the first two Raimi movies, and the first trailer didn't look like it was going anywhere especially different tone-wise than them- but with a proper wisecracking Spidey and a different style of action which looks like making more direct use of his Spider-sense it looks like it might be worthwhile. Plus, great cast.

There is also the whole Gwen Stacey was his true first gf and her story is actually IMPERATIVE to who Parker/Spidey is and who he becomes. This was a character Raimi ignored and went straight to fan fave MJ for some reason. And then she shows up later in the 3rd film as a totally unrecognizable version of her comic counterpart? It was a slap in the face to comic fans, that.
The reason Gwen Stacey is key to Spidey's character development: Spoiler for the comic story and POSSIBLY the new movie so BEWARE:

Gwen Stacey being in it and possibly true to the comics story is good (and executed properly should be a great story), but I'm not enough of a Spidey comics fan to make me think it worth rebooting the whole franchise just for that. But like I say, it looks like its doing enough different to make it very promising.
I think also the Raimi films started coming out at a time where they weren't really sure how much they could get away with tonally in regards to (Gwen Stacey plot spoilers)
It's in some ways a similar reasoning (though in the opposite direction, in terms of darkening Spider-man and lightening Bats) to why Nolan cut the Bat-family and the more fantastical, stylised aspects of the Batman mythos that are key to him in the comics.

And it probably won't surprise you to learn I'm not a huge fan of those either. I'm more tolerant of them because a) they waited longer, and b ) they used a significantly different take on the backstory.
Gwen Stacey vs. MJ is not a significantly different take on Spiderman's backstory, IMO.
Anyway, enjoy the show. If opening weekend buzz is strong, maybe I'll go watch it at that point. Let me know.

They should do a reboot if only to fix the web-shooters. MECHANICAL WEB-SHOOTERS OR NONE!

New trailer out and this is looking increasingly good. I'm actually greatly looking forward to this despite my initial scepticism and only being slightly a fan of the character.

I agree it looks good...with a few caveats.
One: I assumed the POV Spidey shots were trailer-only stuff...according to director Marc Webb they are actually sprinkled liberally throughout the film itself...as evidenced by that new shot of his hand. I'm really not sure how I feel about that...as I think it looks bad.
Two: Are they changing Spidey's origin from being stung by the radioactive spider ONLY to his father having done something to him genetically that makes him predisposed to the spider as a catalyst? Not sure how I would feel about that either.
A solid trailer though, and I LOVE that quippy line about "Oh no, you found my weakness...small knives." LOL.
The shots of the bridge and the cars hanging pretty much solidifies this is the PROPER Gwen Stacey storyline and that means it's going to be DARK...and that is only going to be good for the franchise since the Raimi movies liked to forget that Peter comes from some dark places to get where he is. They kind of glossed over it all...which kind of ruined the character in those films. I always felt it was a disservice to the character that Peter's only reason for not wanting to be with MJ initially is simply because he fears his enemies will get at her and he wouldn't be able to protect her...when in reality it's meant to be...
Which to me is one of his biggest moments.
It looks like we may finally get that moment and I'll be psyched if they do that part.

Agreed there. On the other hand the rest of the action looks ace.

I'm wondering more if it's simply that the spider was aimed at him somehow, that he was manipulated into the position to get bitten. There certainly seems to be a large conspiracy angle though either way and being Oscorp, Green Goblin will surely appear in any sequels. I like the conspiracy part and a Norman Osborn done with more conviction - Willem Dafoe was okay but somehow lacking something - would be ace, so I'm cool with all that.
The thing I really like though is just the look and atmosphere. It manages to be darker than the original while being very obviously inspired by comics visually and heavily stylised - it's probably the most 'comic-book' of the major franchises since Ang Lee's Hulk. I think it looks great in that regard. And as I said a lot of the action looks really good, with a proper heft and weight to it that is often lacking in CGI-heavy films, including the original Spideys.

Ah, good point. It could be that indeed, which would sit much better with me. And yeah, I need to see the Green Goblin done without the camp that Raimi (VIA Defoe) brought to the character. He's supposed to be scary, not goofy.

Agreed. I REALLY like the look of it from these trailers. It's almost as if you look back on the Raimi films as like a filmed up version of the Electric Company Skit Spiderman and these are finally giving it a level or realism and respect without losing what makes it a comic book movie.
