I asked the same question a while ago.. I can't find the thread, but the answer was something about it's been mentioned in an interview or something, but my memory fails.. I found another reference: http://forum.malazan...ndpost&p=763344

I don't particularly like the name "Wu" though.

That we can agree on.

SE once mentioned that whenever he thought of the name for the world he called it Wu, more as a joke than anything else. So the name stuck

My memory is hazy but isn't there a poet named Wu, from one of the chapter openers? I thought he was the origin for some reason.

That's correct. Among a few others, there's a poem attributed to Wu in one of the final chapters of DG.

"The priest of Elder Mael
Dreams of rising seas."

It was an informal, jokey name SE once gave as response to the question of what he called the world, as that's what he once called it, but also said there isn't really a proper one.

Basically, since then, it's stuck around as we don't really have anything else to call it, as I believe someone above has pointed out. :)

Steve was asked once in an interview, how did he and ICE refer to the world dying their gaming, and he referred to it as Wu from the steely Dan song of that name, but it has never been named that in any of the books or anywhere else, so for want of another name, the forum has adopted it as their pet name for a number of years now.

In MoI, there's also a place in Saltoan called Wu's Closet Square.

Quote

No deliberate intent had created Wu's Closet Square. The open space was born of the happenstance convergence of thirteen streets and alleys of various breadth. The inn to which they all once led no longer existed, having burned down a century or so ago, leaving a broad, uneven expanse of flagstones and cobbles that had, unaccountably, acquired the name of Wu's Closet.
