I can't really wait much longer. I want one.
I think I'll order one now and start reading ebooks after TCG.

Okay. I ordered the Kindle today. Got a pretty sweet little case called the Timbuk2 with it.
It felt like a bigger purchase than it actually is. LOL
Phew, I feel good about finally doing it though.

Heh, I don't read very much, Mostly just the Malazan series.
...and I have all the books in Hardcover already, but I somehow talked myself into getting a Kindle about 2 weeks ago.
I think it's great.
It's kind of fun in a weird way.
I'm feeling that as soon as I reread thru the malazan series on it I'll be trying some other fantasy series as well.
Already have some free/cheap books on it and have a bunch others on my wish list.
Heh, the built in dictionary is nice, I'm looking up words that I used to just guess and skip over before
So to sumarize, not a big reader before, Like the Kindle, think it's worth it just for the Malazan series, and I plan on reading more.

Yeah, the dictionary is a nice plus. I think I may eventually re-buy all the Malazan series in eBook form for my Kindle, just for ease of reading and to keep my hardback copies pristine (or at least as pristine as they are.

The SO got me a Nook Color for V-day, and I'm utterly in love with it. Hacked/nooted it the first day, so I can play Angry Birds when I'm not reading, or surf the net when I'm too lazy to get up and go to my computer, lol.
Still trying to get used to the ebook reader bit, though; I love books too much. Unlike some people, I am a heavy reader; three or four novels a week heavy, unless something has just caught my attention (like a reactivated wow account, cough cough.) I love Softcovers in particular (so many more per shelf, hurts wrists less), which are easily mangled, but the entire point was so that I could add to my library without needing to buy more bookshelves, and that I've been able to do.
Not looking forward to the day paper books are phased out, though. There's just something about a good personal library that makes me smile.

So after a bit of a kerfuffle thinking it hadn't arrived when UPS said they dropped it off...my Kindle arrived without too much of a hiccup LESS THAN 24 HOURS AFTER I ORDERED IT!
That's Phoenix AZ to Toronto, ON Canada in less than 24 hours...regular shipping. CRAZY!

I pretty much stopped dropping hints and told my wive "just get me a kindle for xmas".
I am pleased that they finally came out with a model with no clunky, mostly useless keyboard underneath. The new one has a touch KB on the rare occasion you need to type something. I've been using the PC app for a few ebook purchases (mostly to read on my android phone) and they all sync with each other so I doubt I'll even need a keyboard to search the kindle store.
The new version of the kindle is cheaper, smaller but still has actual buttons for page turns. Pretty much took everything I don't like about previous kindle versions (clunkiness) and the single most annoying thing about a touch screen (smudgy piece of shit within 5 seconds of use) and effectively eliminated both problems.
I am interested to see how graphics look on the device. I've been disappointed with the resolution on the PC and phone apps. The phone app lets you zoom in at least, but the resolution is invariably atrocious. Hopefully that aspect improves as the ebook format evolves in general. I've purchased a couple of ebooks now that have a lot of graphics (how-to type books) and have been universally disappointed with their low resolution scanning, poorly formatted figure captions and smallness.

Are you not maybe getting your new kindle models confused? The bottom of the range kindle has the buttons on the side, but to use the keyboard you have to use the D-Pad. The kindle touch has the touchscreen keyboard, but no buttons on the side - you tap it the way you would the phone app.

@Abyss,
I really don't want a tablet computer though. I read ebooks on computer screens / phone screens now and the LCD is what bothers me. The whole point of getting an e-reader for me is to have the e-ink screen with no eye-burning backlight, and to eliminate paper book purchases as much as possible (except for the bigger picture books) - cause I don't care one way or the other if my words are written on dead trees or plastic. The plastic version is way smaller and more portable but basically retains the nice aspects of a paper book - namely the lack of backlight.
@alt
yes, I was mixing that up. I'm not sure which one she got me. I'd be alright with the touch since I'm not going to use to type anything ever...but I'd rather have something where I never have to touch the screen for any reason at all.
The real basic one (the one now going for 80 bucks cdn) is the best I think. I'm by no means representative of all users...I mean the best for me.
I find it funny that they have so many models right now. Seems like they're just using the shotgun approach to see which model sells best and then they'll scale it back to just those 1 or 2 models. Truly, having a touchscreen model with page turn buttons on the side would be all around the best possible combination.

- 1/2 the storage (still 1400 books....who the fuck is going to have more than that, really?)
- kb via D-pad, which for the 2 times I might actually need it it is way better than the kindle with the KB underneath or a smudged up screen.
- flips pages and refreshes more quickly than the other models due to newer tech in the display.
- all around smaller, lighter, slimmer than the other models.
- No 3G, but again, who is buying a cellphone data plan for their kindle when you can just plug it into your computer (or use wifi which is basically everywhere) to do the same thing.

To be honest, I'd prefer the touchscreen - my biggest problem with my kindle is the fact that I keep accidentally turning the page if I'm not careful how I'm holding it, but that is just me. Given the fact that there is no backlight and very little glare, it's a lot more difficult to see fingerprints on an e-ink display in any case.
If I'm not getting confused you got an S2 recently didn't you? If that is the case, there's no reason to buy a 3G kindle - on the rare occasion you're away from wifi and really need to download a book, just turn the wifi hotspot on your phone on and use that, it's what I've done in the past when I finished a book while travelling.

That's correct RE the Samsung GS2. I've actually been doing a lot of reading on the phone. The android app is actually not too bad all things considered if you turn it to black background with white text (to reduce the backlight retina burning action).
But yes. There is absolutely no reason for me to spend extra money on the 3G when it probably won't work anywhere except Toronto (and possibly Vancouver or something) in Canada and when I have access to the kindle store on a) my work computer, b ) my home computer, c) my phone. AND I can plug in to a USB to upload books at virtually any computer. There is also free wifi in my city, and at the school I currently attend, and at home.
I called the wife off the touchscreen model last night. The basic no-KB model is all I want. After reading reviews about the response to touch being a little slow and jittery, I know this would drive me absolutely insane, especially when the primary function of the thing is to just turn pages. Folks were saying they always touch (no response), and touch again, but then find that they've advanced 2 or 3 pages instead of just one....or accidentally touch and bring up a menu...when adjusting the grip ont he device. I'd rather just have one with buttons.
That and the touch version can't go in landscape mode. I call bullshit on that big time. There is no good reason why that should not be included as a matter of course when every other kindle model does it. Just smacks of design shortcuts...like they didn't have time to program the touch interface to deal with landscape mode so they just left it out. Makes me wonder what else would go wrong with it.
Either way they're cheap, so if I don't like the model I have, I'll just sell it and upgrade next year or something. For the bulk of my paperback reading, I can't see it being an issue at all.

My wife's Kindle Fire just shipped! Can't wait to see it.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

I also read black on white, much easier on the eyes and the screen doesn't have to be as bright. You might also want to consider springing an extra $30 for the add free version, which you specifically have to ask for when you purchase (they obviously haven't made fuss about the fact that you can get ad-free versions). I've read that the adds are only for special deals on the amazon store, some of which are only available through the kindle ads, but given how often I get emails from amazon informing me that generic fantasy author x's five year old book I already own has had its price slashed I'd probably give them a skip myself.

I see that now and thanks. You have saved my life.
If I had to get ads on something I paid 80 bucks for, with no option of blocking them, I would have a fucking brain aneurysm. And you're right. They almost hide the spot where you can select "special offers" or "no special offers" versions. Bastards.
That almost cast a pall on the whole thing for me...not that they have an ad / ad-free version, but the fact that the info isn't up front. Blatant trickery and misleading advertising I say.
but I've already bought too many kindle books to consider another one now. Thanks x 1,000,000.

Some good reviews there lads. I have been thinking of getting one myself although I love having a paper back in hand. The only thing that is turning me off is the e-books are the basicallyy he same price as the paper backs so its a case of why bother??

Well, for that you need to consider other "costs" - the convenience of having all your paperbacks in one place, that you can fit in your hand vs. shelves and shelves of books you can't carry with you.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

I'd love to get my life down to one or two gadgets that contained all of my books, music and movies. Leaves more space around the house for other things. I know some people like having lots of belongings but having moved house 8 times in the last 13 years I firmly believe that owning lots of objects is vastly overrated. My Kindle is perfect for my commute, I usually have to stand on the train and tube so I have one hand for my kindle and the other free to hold on.
