Anime Have-seens, recommendations, WTFs

I'm, like much of the American audience, swamped constantly by shonen anime (naruto, etc), and am not afraid to read subtitles.

I've watched a number of (some terrible) shows, but it's vacation now, and I hope a wider audience would produce a wider source of opinion.

Amongst the crap I've seen:
Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star (a crappy Bebop)
Naruto (yeah, I broke down and watched all of it, 200 ish hours of my life back please)
Bleach, mostly
K-On! (moe city)
Blood+
Spice and Wolf
Gundam (Everything, all of it, the whole thing)
others.

THINGS I THINK ARE AWESOME:
Cowboy Bebop (who doesn't)
K-On! (and !!)
Spice and Wolf (some interesting discussion of economics, to be derailed by half-wolf woman-goddess)

TOTAL WTF
Panty and Stocking

Things I'm supposed to see (i.e. outstanding recommendations)
Gankutsuo
Darker than Black

What have you Malazanites watched? What would you recommend? What would you condemn to the recesses of 'What the hell is this'?

Don't watch much anime, but Samurai Champloo is awesome, and One Piece is hilarious. That's about the extent of my knowledge. Apparently you should steer clear from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Even though that's a kickass title, a friend warned me to stay away.

It's a monumental mindfuck the further in the series goes. But I would recommend watching it. And the film too.

Seen more then I want to think about, last year and some have been fairly horrible however seems like mostly trash is made.

Amongst the better in my oppinion are...
Baccano! Short and nearly perfect humor, violence and weirdness.
Black Lagoon. Violent entertainment
Code Geass. While not perfect it is one of the better Mecha stuff.
Darker Than Black. About the best action anime around, second season loses it in the last few episodes.
Cowboy Bebop.
Infinite Ryvius. Somewhat old but a very good space anime.
Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Im not much for those pure humor series but this one is damn good.
Kaze no Yojimbo. Lowkey drama series.
Kino's Travel. One of the best out there, hard to put in a place but most people are sold after the first episode.
Macross Frontier. Kinda anime version of Bays transformers films always entertaining.
Mushi-shi. Lowkey supernatural drama.
Ouran High School Host Club. Another of those rare humor series which stand out.
Requim from the Darkness. About the best there is ghost stories kinda.
Samurai Champloo. Has already been mention, great action, humor.
Spice and Wolf. Damn odd mix of ecconomics and interaction between the two mains, very well done.

Of the multitudes of GUNDAM series i've seen only WING, SEED and SEED DESTINY. Tho hideously repetitious, they are fun. At the very least, the actions scenes are awesome. If you're going to watch just one i think WING is the way to go if only because some of the 'heroes' are assholes for most of the series.

FULL METAL ALCHEMIST gets too silly sometimes, but overall is a really neat piece of work with some fairly sick twists and great characters.

LEGEND OF ESCAFLOWNE - i waver on whether i really enjoyed this or just sort of enjoyed it, but it's worth a look, notwithstanding the real-world-schoolgirl-in-fantasy-world cliches.

If you go WAY back, RECORD OF LODOSS WAR isn't bad at all, and memorable for this exchange...

...and let me drag you away from neo-asian animation into canuckland and recommend that you track down REBOOT. It starts a bit rough tho it has a few good laughs, but gradually improves and even gets really dark for the last couple of seasons.

Heard Ghost in the Shell is supposed to be good but I never bother to watch anime by myself (got a friend who watches them from time to time and obviously shows them to me when I go stop by). Elfen Lied was ... amusing as well. The nudity was pointless fanservice but the violence was ok. Again the characters were fucked up more ways than one (especially Lucy/Nyu). Amusingly enough my friend liked Nyu while I liked Lucy (and have since used her as the template for a fucked character in a story).

Agreed. The first season was kind of ho-hum but fun...and then later on they scrubbed some characters, made others more badass, and made the villains roughers and opened up into the wider Net...and when Bob became like a human Glitch I was much more into it. Also, I like theta they eventually made Megabyte henchmen Hack & Slash start to question their masters will. Very cool. As was Enzo's adult version Matrix.

Oh, and Hexadecimal is still really creepy.

There was talk of theatrical REBOOT movies being made and even a character design video labeled Guardian released by the company who owns the rights Rainmaker studios...I'd love to see it happen.

It was probably the best Canadian animated show since Nelvana went under in the mid-90's.

This is still to this day the anime that affected me more than any other. I have watched the series and the films repeated times with and without audio commentary...the whole story has SO much allegory (religious, philosophical, spiritual, historical) that I can't even fathom it still to this day.

It should say something that Hideki Anno (writer and director of the series) was in a four year depression where he contemplated suicide many many times...and finally came out of his funk and wrote this series....it shows. LOL.

The newly done (released in parts) Evangelion 1.0, 2.0...ect films have actually taken the series, redone the animation better, added a few characters and made script changes and edits that make the whole things make more sense to the casual viewer and will succeed better with a general audience. I HIGHLY recommend these new versions as opposed to the originals as they are just more polished and impressive to me with the story being told.

One Piece is the second best television show I have ever watched. Only The Wire exceeds it.

I never liked Evangelion. It was too mired in its own mythos and pathos to catch on with me. I have no idea why it connects so strongly with people. The main character is worse than Hamlet in being paralyzed by self-doubt.

FLCL is a fantastic six episode series as well.

REBOOT was exactly as Abyss and QuickTidal describe it.

There's this 10 minute episodic series on Cartoon Network called Adventure Time. That's great, great humor and funky battles as well.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Yeah, Eva takes some getting into....and Shinji's self-doubt is key to the final decisions that need making in the series...but he comes off as annoying as hell, and the various female characters around him represent all the various things he SHOULD be as a young man, but isn't. It's not everyone's cup o tea though...as it really is depressing and dark.

FLCL is so awesome. Short, sweet and weird in a fun way. (Same folk who worked on Eva I think actually, minus Anno, which probably speaks volumes...LOL)

Some of my favorite ones have already been mentioned above, like Baccano!, Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Ergo Proxy or Samurai Champloo. I'd like to also add to this list Monster - brilliantly done series, with great characters and a multilayered psycho-thriller story; and Karas, which is one of the most visually impressive anime I've ever seen. Also, pretty good (although maybe not brilliant) ones are Noein, Wolf's Rain and maybe Terra e (the series, not the original movie from the 80s), which are all worth a look.

I am sure I will remember some more and might even bother to elaborate on my suggestions as soon as I get some proper sleep... :)
