It reminded him of a role call. Admittedly, the gathered men and women on the deck were more of a mass than an organised, disciplined force, and they lacked uniformity not just in clothing, but in composition - here, humans and abhumans, even some aliens were mixed together. Captain of the Guard Rellinus kept his face carefully impassive as he observed the proceedings, even as he passed judgement on the poor organisation evident amongst the 'hopefuls'.

Hopeful, no doubt, of being let back to their rooms, rather than being called forward. After all, the cramped, dark and damp quarters aboard the cruiser were far preferable to actually having to go on a mission, as far as all but the most insane candidates were concerned. Many names were called, one after the other - and through it all, the two Inquisitors stood upon the raised dais looking out like a king and queen surveying their subjects, as impressively dissatisfied as Rellinus was impassive.

Carefully and surreptitiously as he could, the Captain eyed the younger, female Inquisitor. Definitely attractive - cute, even. If it wasn't for the expression on her face, he'd be tempted to have a pass at her - as it was, that and her station meant he kept such thoughts well and truly to himself...though it couldn't hurt to look, and think. It took him a few minutes to realize the names had stopped being called. Both the Inquisitors were staring at him. Rellinus felt his knees give slightly at the combined attention. It was like being pinned to the wall and crushed at the same time! His mouth worked for a moment or two, before he found his tongue, "Everyone else, dismissed!" The pressure eased as the Inquisitors swing their attention elsewhere, and Rellinus, his impassive facade thoroughly wrecked, breathed a sigh of relief.

The Guards waiting to one side spread down in between the selected and rejected groups, and began herding the latter out the room - electro-batons sheathed. Quietly, Rellinus straightened his uniform and steadied himself - it was a rare event, and for that he was thankful. He had to be careful now, not to make the same mistake again - normally he managed not to lose track of time, at least. When all had left, Lord Farzael stepped forward and addressed the smaller group, who numbered exactly forty.

"You are all here for the same reason." He began, soft voice carrying across the emptiness of the room. "Some of you have come willingly, or at the lure of rewards, while others...some of you are forced to be here, as penance for your sins. But whether you are here for glory, for greed, or for your souls, you are all here, to serve one purpose: rooting out heresy." A long pause, as he let that sink in. They all already knew, of course. It was just a matter of reinforcing the idea. Twenty times, Rellinus had heard this speech, and each time it was just as effective, galvanizing the doomed souls to carry out their duty. And it was uplifting for the soldiers, as well. The men and women of the Imperial Guard aboard this ship rarely saw action of their own, and it was good to remind them that their time here was not wasted.

"For all intents and purposes, you all cease to exist in any former capacity you may have had from this moment. You are now all agents of the Inquisition, dedicated to the greatest cause that can be found in our Imperium: defending the people from themselves." Pacing now, slow and measured across the front of the room, steps echoing in time with his words. "You hold no rank, no authority other than what we bestow upon you. You have no allegiance but to the Emperor, and to each other, and you will get no recognition for what you have done here but in death. Whether you are of the Guard, the Penal Legions, the various Adeptus, a mercenary band, or whether you are merely a citizen, you were all brought here under the providence of the Emperor, and will not leave until your duties are fulfilled. What you will see over the course of your missions is likely to strike fear into your hearts, madness into your minds, and leave many scars upon your soul. All this will be redeemed upon your death in the line of duty." Another pause followed. The gathered press was silent, as always, each dealing with what had been said in their own way - but all, no doubt, realizing anew how dire their situation was.

He halted again, precisely where he had been standing before."You will be split into groups, led by a senior officer of my staff, or a member of my retinue. Once with them, you will be briefed on your objectives. Above all else, remember that there is no shame in dying for your fellow man, and that your salvation will come with death, and death alone. The Emperor protects!" A chorus of 'For the God-Emperor' returned. The Lord Farzael surveyed the men and women in front of him for a moment longer, as the Captain, along with his fellow officers amongst the Guardsmen hurried to organize the squads, then turned and walked away. Inquisitor Raquelia still stood on the dais, overseeing the arrangement, and preparing to accompany a group of her own...

In stark contrast to the rest of the ship, the spartan chambers Farzael used as his office were nonetheless finely appointed, the main luxuries being the ornate desk and its accompanying chairs, high-backed and plush. Reading the data-pad took him only a moment, at which point the Inquisitor turned his attention back to Raquelia, one brow cocked.

"You're sure you want this group?"

"Is there something wrong with its makeup, Farzael?" The younger woman's voice was soft, reserved, a perfect, feminine refleciton of Farzael's own. He smiled for just a second, before sitting back in his chair, dropping the data-pad casually onto his desk.

"Everything's wrong with it, and you know it. The girl has useful skills, true - but did you read the letters accompanying her file? Cut through the black ink, and she's just as liable to be...trouble. A pair of tech-priests, too. We both know that kind of redundancy is inefficient. The condemned noble is slightly better, but between him and the Captain - what an annoyance that one has proved to be, by the way, he's been petitioning to see me since we brought him aboard, apparently - you're putting your life in the hands of some questionable individuals." There was, maybe, a hint of concern to his tone. An undercurrent, one might say. To anyone listening, however, it was pure business.

"They may be a rabble, and I have no illusions about their capabilities, but can you really say any of the other groups are better? Whichever Guardsman was put in charge of co-ordinating them should be executed." Her smile was more blatant than Farzael's had been - they both knew he was responsible for the distribution. Such things were never entrusted to anyone else. "The mission itself is hardly an exercise in squad tactics, in any case."

The Inquisitor Lord sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose for a few seconds while he thought it through. "And what of the pariah? You'll be lucky if the worst you get is a headache - his mere presence is going to unsettle everyone, and it will make any use of your powers painful, if not downright dangerous, Raquelia." A shrug was her only response. "Well, if you insist. But please, don't risk yourself for them - and make sure your plan covers every contingency, this time."

"Of course, my Lord." Rising to her feet - gracefully as always - Raquelia bowed to Farzael, and then exited his office. Farzael sat for a while longer, lost in thought, as he stroked the spirit stone about his neck, then he too departed the office, heading for the Navigator's quarters.

Before we start ,a post from Talic Starsearch, as per his owner's request:

Talic was in a foul mood. His ship, The Delightful Guest, had been crippled. He was needed there, and what was he doing? Pacing the floor in a small dingy cell like room waiting on the leisure of the Inquisition.

He'd heard rumors about this Lord Inquisitor, none of which particularly comforted him right now, but he had to admit, things were better since Lord Farzael had came to the system. Remembering too well the years the system had been nearly over run by chaos and other xeno threats, Farzael had brought peace to the area. Peace was good for business, and good business led to great piracy.

Still, as good for his profession the inquisition had been here, he had no real desire to serve. Yet serve he must, if he was to get his ship back to fighting fit. A pirate with a near useless vessel had the life expectancy of a Squig in an ork uprising.

Still he felt trapped here, in this miserable room, longing for the luxurious quarters he had provided for himself on his own ship. His communication device had been taken away, and he had spent the past 13 days pacing this cell, not even let out to eat. His food was brought to him by an imperial guardsman who hardly say two words the entire stay.

His door opened unexpectedly, and two guardsmen entered the room.

"You will follow us. Do not talk unless spoken too. You have been summoned." Screamed the pesky guardsman.

Talic sighed, why must they always shout? "As you wish, but i was just starting to get comfortable." Ignoring the scowls he strode out of his room, doing his best to give of the impression that the guards where less an escort and more of an Honor guard.

He soon entered a large gathering hall, half filled with the most despicable group miscreants as you could hope to find.

He blinked and did a double check.

Theres Xenos here! walking loose on an Inquisitor vessel!

Though he was shaken he did nothing to show it, putting on one of his most disarming smiles he strutted into the throng, and leaned casually against the rear wall. He'd be damned if he left his back exposed in this place.

He was tempted to activate his lense, he could use every piece of information he could here. But with so many people here, many of whom had alien body signatures, all he would get would be a headache.

Soon the room was full, and a couple entered the room at the front and stood upon a raised Dias.

So thats the inquisitor...whose the woman? surly that slip of a girl isn't Inquisitor Raquelia? Nothing at all like the rumours....

He was tempted to make a pass at the girl, rare was the woman who could pass on his charms, but bed an inquisitor? He'd rather sleep with a sister of battle!... and he'd vowed never to do that again...he hadn't been able to walk straight for weeks afterwards....

A roll call was shouted, his own name was called, though not with the sense of awe he felt he deserved. Soon after, more then half the room was dismissed, Talic did a quick count, about 40 people, using the word people lightly of course, had been told to stay behind.

Lord Farzael stepped forward and addressed Talic and the rabble around him.

"You are all here for the same reason. Some of you have come willingly, or at the lure of rewards, while others...some of you are forced to be here, as penance for your sins. But whether you are here for glory, for greed, or for your souls, you are all here, to serve one purpose: rooting out heresy."

And Ive done a great job of that, trapped in that box of a room of yours....

"For all intents and purposes, you all cease to exist in any former capacity you may have had from this moment. You are now all agents of the Inquisition, dedicated to the greatest cause that can be found in our Imperium: defending the people from themselves

You hold no rank, no authority other than what we bestow upon you. All this will be redeemed upon your death in the line of duty."

Death in the line of duty? No authority?

His ship would be fixed in just under a month...perhaps he should try to get a message to them to come pick him up, he was beginning to hate this more and more. Sure he'd have to spend some time on the run, maybe leave the sector, but he operated outside the law, sometimes outside the imperium itself. He'd be fine....

He did his best to look eager and excited for the mission, ready and willing to go slay the fools who would put themselves against the emperor.

."You will be split into groups, led by a senior officer of my staff, or a member of my retinue. Once with them, you will be briefed on your objectives. Above all else, remember that there is no shame in dying for your fellow man, and that your salvation will come with death, and death alone. The Emperor protects!"

He felt like sighing in frustration., instead he enthusiastically shouted "For the God-Emperor!" along with the other idiots in the room.

There had to be a way to get his repairs and escape, but looking into Farzael's eyes he began to suspect that he was trapped here till the end....

The Captain of the Guard aboard the ship was briefing the squad himself, unaware that Raquelia planned to accompany it. A member of her retinue had been assigned to the group, she recalled, and the man was waiting patiently as the mission was explained. The young Inquisitor went to stand next to him - psychically, she informed him of the change of plans, though he insisted that he stay on with the group, in order to protect her.

"You will be set down on the planet below via cutter-craft, which will await the successful completion of your mission at the shuttleport. Once on the ground, you are tasked with investigating and rooting out a suspected Chaos cult in the southern districts of the city, reported by a local source to have been active for the past five months, despite numerous attempts to remove them.

"First you will have to find the contact for further details, and then pursue the matter further at your own discretion - the Lord Farzael would point out that he wants little collateral damage, and that your presence on the planet's surface alone will attract enough attention as it is, without excessive use of force. You will be accompanied by a servant of the Inquisitor's personal staff, Alens Bantenhope, to facilitate any interaction with local authorities and to ensure the successful completion of your mission - he will inform you further on the trip down. The cutter is down the hall, to your left. Proceed there-"

Raquelia interrupted. "A moment, Captain."

"Of course, inquisitor." Was all he managed to stammer out, having missed her arrival.

"I will be accompanying this group also, see to it that they are outfitted with the appropriate communications devices...and we'll be using my cutter, instead." Her own pilot was a long-time member of her staff, and could be counted on no matter the extremity of circumstance that faced them, unlike some of the other pilots aboard.

Their contact, it was now revealed, was an agent of a small-time intelligence dealer in Hive 24, the newest of the great hive-cities on this planet. His name was Lexilius T'angur, and had been feeding interesting information to the Inquisitor Lord for years now, unbeknownst to his master. For once, the info he had sent was of potentially significant value, hence the mission. If his 'lead' turned out to be false, the man would not live to see the next day.

He was meant to meet them in the bar known as Sharon's Shady Shack, on one of the lower levels of the mid-rise.

Bustling towards the Inquisitor's cutter, the group were issued with vox-units, and some received fake idents in case they were arrested by local law enforcement while the Inquisitor was otherwise occupied. They then found themselves with a few moments to talk on the short shuttle ride down to the planets surface. Each member was strapped into the transportation seats in the hold, five a side, facing each other across a short gap. The noise of the ships engines could be clearly heard, but not enough to impede conversation - the ride down was smooth, a testament to the pilot's prowess.

Raquelia was eying the pariah from across the hold - even from here she was repulsed by him. No doubt the poor Captain Starsearch was being greatly unnerved by the seating arrangements. Alens was smiling happily around - it had been too long since he'd been on a proper field mission.

Game is on.

You are in the hold of Raquelia's cutter. In addition to your existing equipment you now have a vox unit (voice communicator, earpiece and throat-mounted microphone that requires touch to activate), and a data-slate containing mission details as they have so far been revealed to you (i.e. background history and description of Lexilius, the overview of the mission, some info on the planet as follows below) which is about the size of your palm.

Seating arrangements for the moment (you can talk to anyone, however, just make a note of how the seating might affect conversation):

Raquelia, Kynia G'Kal, Faelus Cartinor, Justinian Funus Obitus, Stumpy

Alens Bantenhope, Travaz Malakai, Cimsran, Talic Starsearch, Drake Dekko Yarn.

The Planet: Caligula IV, is a hive world, with 24 individual hive cities across the two continents. Smog fills the atmosphere, forming dark, noxious clouds above even the highest of hive spires, often resulting in acid rain. It's primarily an industrial planet, with a significant portion of its population either working in factories or living in squalor in the low-rise slums. It is notorious for having produced little to no archeotech despite the many excursions into the lowest sub-levels over the years.
Almost all the hives are built within 5000km of the equator, as the poles are nearly uninhabitable during the summer months due to massive gas formations close to the surface as the polar ice caps melt. It is a physically large planet, with plenty of room for expansion, with an existing population of about 20 billion. The local Adeptus Arbites is well versed in the art of putting down uprisings, and the nearest Inquisitorial office is in Hive seventeen, working under a skeleton crew aided by servitors.

Faelus looks from side to side, surveying those who would be his comrades on the mission he had been assigned to. A more diverse group than he had interacted with in his time on Mars, which intimidated him slightly. Interpersonal interactions were... never his strongest skill. On the whole they carried an interesting assortment of weapons, perhaps there would be time to study more than his own test systems. After all, efficiency is an aspect of the Machine. He let out a short burst of static as he saw the modifications that some of the weaponry had been subjected to. His irritation did not quell his anticipation - the restoration of tortured weapons were after all a specialty of his.

His mouth twitched slightly as his gaze rested on the Enginseer across from them. In his experience that particular brach of the Adeptus were a droll and uninteresting group, the Quest often secondary to their immediate concerns. Despite this, they had their uses and it would be pleasant to have at least one other who shared his beliefs.

He examined the data slate that had been provided to him. The Lord Inquisitor had access to fairly advanced technology if he was able to hand out this level of quality to an untried group. Maybe he could have a word with the female Inquisitor and determine if their was anything with more potential available. He reached into his left sleeve and pulled out a cable and the appropraite adaptor, then plugged it into the data slate. A frenzy of images were reflected off Faelus's mirrored visor. Satisfied, he returned his attention to the Enginseer.

He began to emit a greeting in Lingua Technis, then halted. A private conversation at this early junction might be deemed... Inapporiate. He cleared his throat and spoke instead.

"Greetings in the name of the Machine God, and his avatar the God-Emperor."

Cimsran looked over at the abnormal form of the Enginseer and said with fear in his voice:

'greetings...'

Seated next to the Inquisitor, Kynia made no effort to socialize. Having been exposed to psykers at various times during her career (although few of them with the duties of Inquisitor, and never in a (for them) professional capacity), she was assuming the woman would be reading and scanning her mind. She also assumed Raquelia was reading her thoughts at this very moment. Vicious circles. She wanted to sigh in exasperation but knew that doing so would draw eyes to her, and with that, conversation. Bad enough she was the only woman in the group, apart from the Inquisitor, it would probably lead to a few of them trying to get into her pants. For now, her rank as Ordinatus would be sufficient to deter them, but later on, when the mission got under way and they'd be comrades under arms, that might change. Not for her, of course.

There seemed to be a large contingent of Imperial Guardsmen in this group. Cannon fodder. Clearly the Inquisitor expected armed resistance and wanted both firepower and expendable resources with her. It also seemed to indicate a less than stealthy approach to the matter at hand.
But at the least, the troopers be used to a strict hierarchy and would respect her civilian rank, especially if she showed some competence. The trader captain was a whole different matter, he had that confident swagger, that smug outlook that only comes with those with supreme social confidence. He'd be one to watch. The little ratling had the look of a thief. She was confident she could steal back anything he took from her, but that would prove awkward... an official of her rank would never have developed the slight of hand to manage that. Maybe a word, later, in private, could solve the matter.

She closed her eyes and leaned back. If only that last mission had not ended the way it had.... This was going to be one giant ordeal.

OOC: @Cimsran I'm not really that abnormal looking. I think you are getting me confused with Travaz, the Enginseer I just addressed. No problem though, I think it's going to take a while to remember who is who

OOC: agree. I only just noticed that I was talking about Talric Starthingie as 'Trade Captain' (I guess him being an intergalactic pirate is confidential :hulk:), where it can be read as the ehm, whatshisname bastard son of the Rogue Trader....

also, that is a lot OOC :)

OOC: Like I said, no problem. I am a rune mechanic, not an enginseer though. If a wimpy version of Judge Dredd with no armor is abnormal, then ok; but the giant half robot man isn't me - it's the guy I'm trying to talk to.

IC: after the long akward silence Cimsran asked Faelus: "what do you think of this mission then?" while deftly avoiding eye contact with anyone in the room.

Justinian let his body sway to the rocking motion of the shuttle, keeping his mind empty and without focus for the descent. He'd already taken in the strange mix of men and women accompanying him on this mission and had not been particularly intrigued. Years ago he would've tried to glean from their faces who would survive the coming mission, but as he'd grown older such mental masturbation seemed futile and without value. They were all going to be dead soon enough, which suited him fine.

Still, the inquisitor changed things a little. Inquisitors were dull, annoying people to be sure, but not really the suicidal kind. If she was here with them, there might be more to the mission than what first med the eye. He adjusted his body slightly - the new knives where still not comfortable, especially the one between his shoulder blades - and let the outside world wash away.

They would find out soon enough.

::OOC Sorry for the essay first post...::

Talic felt like his skin was crawling, he did his best to hide his dislike, but who thought it was a good idea to bring a pox ridden pariah on this mission?

He glanced through the information disk but found it hard to concentrate so close to pariah.

Remember your focus Talic! If you want to survive this fools errand you need to take charge, quick! You cant let this young girl run around trying to command. First impressions are everything, if I don't get a following soon they will question everything I say, and i doubt keeping Talic Starsearch alive is one of the inquisitors main goals.

Perhaps i should turn this rabble into a mob, and lynch that damn blacksoul...once Ive got them to do something like that they should fall in behind my leadership easily enough, and nobody wants a pariah around...

Trying not to grimace he looked around at the crew.

At least that pysker inquisitor would be suffering as much as I am, pyskers cant stand pariahs as some of them could block out pysk abilities.

All of a sudden, he nearly burst out laughing.

By the emperor its so simple! The inquisitors abilities will be negated by the pariah, if i can get him on my side, get him working for me, not only will i be able to lead this unholy gathering, but i could kill the inquisitor at my leisure! I could escape back to my ship!

Calm down now...dont draw that kind of attention on yourself. Stick to the original plan, keep to the mission, cultivate a following, a successful mission will be far more beneficial than me escaping now...but keep it as a back up...just in case this mission becomes a little to dangerous.

Oh well, time to work. At least i can put some distance between me and the souless...

He stood up as he began to talk to the crew, moving to the front of the hold so he could easily command the attention of everyone there.

"Friends, My name is Captain Talic Starsearch. Some of you may of heard of me.

Friends, It is a glorious thing we begin this day. It will be dangerous, but heresy must be stamped out wherever it is found, and I for one feel deeply honored by the inquisition for allowing me to serve the emperor in this matter." He smiled at Raquelia and bowed his head in her direction.

"We must pull together to do the emperors most holy will. Each of us here have ability's that make us useful, but we must work as one, together we will become more than just the sum of our parts! We will become the instrument of the emperors Vengeance!" Several of the imperial guardsmen cheered.

"Please allow me, ladies" He gave the two women a confident, knowing smirk. "And gentlemen, to use my experience to help guide us in this endeavor. I have, alas been forced to deal with those foolish enough to defy the Divine Emperor and serve Chaos before. I know better than anyone that they cannot be trusted."

Suddenly an image of his son Triton, Commanding the Chaos flagship that had so recently attacked his own vessel nearly made him lose his composure.

"I have read through the information given, and find it wanting. If i may be so bold as to suggest a plan for you all to consider?" Without waiting for the
Raquelia to respond he launched into his plan.

"Lexilius, our contact on the planet... I cannot find myself trusting this man. Therefore I suggest that we keep our prescience as quiet as possible while we are on the planet. I believe it would be foolish and unnecessary for us to all to attend this meeting. Why risk trouble when we can be covert. We should split into four distinct groups.

The first group made up of imperial guard, should be left here on the ship to keep it defended. It wouldn't be the first vessel stolen in a hive world dock.

The second group, lead by Raquelia, will be the largest party. This group will be split into two separate parts. The first will enter Sharon's Shady Shack, and pretend to be patrons. They will be hidden back up should Lexilius try anything untoward against our prestigious inquisitor." Another quick smile to wards Raquelia.

"The other part of the second group are to innate contact with our source and retrieve any information he may have without blowing his cover.

The third group will consist of myself, and maybe one or two others. I have several contacts, with both low folk and highborn on this world, and while many of them are not in this hive they will have information about the goings on here. It is likely they will be able to help us locate our enemy.

Finlay the forth group. If we are to be successful we need good information. The best way to get this info, is to hack into the communications infrastructure, here on Caligula four. With this in place, hopefully we will be able to record any communication between the Chaos cultists and hopefully uncover there entire operation. Sadly we must answer to the greater need of the emperor, and ignore the lesser laws of man, though it pains me to do so. Rumors leak out, if Raquelia was simply to use her rank to demand access, the cultists would soon find out. Then we would become the prey and they the hunters."

Leaning back against the wall he looked at each member of the crew individually.

"Normally I would know you all well enough to help assign you to each task, if we decide to go with my plan, but we are all strangers here. It is up to you to discuss among yourselves which areas you would be particularly effective." He turned to Raquelia, and locked her gaze, but he still talked to the room.

"Don't you all agree that my plan will be the most effective?"

this was a more familiar situation and in his mind Cimsran could not help to feel relived by the prospect of guarding the ship with only his fellow guardsmen.

Smiling and saying loud and learly as his to his sargent home at merridian: "YES SIR!"

The captain's endless string of talk briefly forced Justinian back into the world. For a moment he was reminded of his own youthful enthusiasm and how well that had served him in hand to hand combat with Chaos Space Marines back home. It would seem that this captain.. Starsearch? even the name was pompous, wanted to insert himself as the leader of their little group. Subtlety perhaps not being his strong suit as the Inquisitor was sure to notice.

Justinian did a quick re estimate as he observed the plotting man. They would all die, but Starsearch would die first.

Faelus twisted in his seat slightly to look at the Guardsman across from him who had just spoken. Not who he had adressed, but he had learnt from his work on Mars that relationships with those who used weapons regularly were worth cultivating.

"Greetings, I am Adeptus Faelus. May I enquire as to your identity? I have not aqcuired enough information concerning our mission to render adequate judgement on our task. In any case all objectives are secondary to the Quest for Knowledge. I hope that the two will overlap sufficiently to meet my needs on this outing."

Before the Guardsman could reply, the man in pirate garb jumped up and rushed to the front of transport, giving a speech most likely intended to be inspiring and rousing to those who did not follow logic's strict paths. It had obviously had that effect on the Guardsman who he had just spoken to. Still, he could not fault that the plan had several merits. Twisting further in his seat he addressed the captain.

"What skills do you believe would be suitable for each group? Along which path would the greatest store of knowledge lie? I request that I be placed in that group, should the Inquisitor approve the plan you have put forth."

OOC: crossposting is likely going to be a bit of a problem, especially while we are all in a big group like this. Is it OK if we slightly retcon other people's actions into our own narratives like I just did?

She had been right in her first assessment of the pompous trade captain. An idiot who did not know his place.
"When?" she asked, arching an eyebrow, "When was the last time you tried to get information out of a contact in a place of his choosing, in crooked alleys and backstreets of the bad parts of a Hive, where there is no establishment of order or organization like on a spaceship, which is quite probably all you are familiar with? Have you even considered that after this informer, we will be searching for people who do not want to be found, who do not just hide, but also employ violence to remain hidden? And you suggest that we walk in without proper fire support?"
She snorted. "Not to mention that you are, in fact, usurping the authority of an anointed member of the Eclessiarchy."
