While I agree that most animes are shit, Ghost in the Shell is pure cinema pleasure on a box.

Number 2 however was merely mostly graphic candy.
Solaris wasn't too bad, I thought, but since I never bothered to get it on dvd, there's little but the memory of watching it.

Event Horizon - notion reinforced
I Am Legend - even though the film fucks up the ending, but being the Jesus freak fan you are, you'll probably like this one better than the book

Movies like Solaris remind me that it's hard to turn a book into a screenplay and I think it's not worth the time.
I think nobody mentioned Equilibrium - one of the few movies everybody should watch.
The same can be said about V for Vendetta, but the sci-fi element there is almost missing.
Repo men was good, but maybe a bit too serious for something to watch with your girlfriend.
Watchmen - great, one of the best, I've ever seen.
The Fifth Element is a great comedy as well as a good sci-fi movie, but not too serious.
I, Robot - great visually, interesting story, some nice lines, not much in common with the book of Azimov, but a positive mark in the end.

Here's the thing...

You are going to be watching these movies with your girlfriend. That's right, your girlfriend. Not your buds.
I assume that the strategic thinking behind this move is to
a) bring you closer;
b ) share each others' interests; and,
c) have an excuse to hang out for an couple of hours before you just shag.

So a bit of tactical thought is required.

Movies that are essentially splatterfests or shootemups are not going to help you here. There is nothing about PREDATOR, legendary flic that it is, that will put anyone in the mood. At least, not anyone normal and over the age of 14...

Thus, a bit of thought is required here... your selection of films should reflect your deeper, inner self as a mature and insightful individual or some crap like that...

Ehm, I think Tiste does not want her to get in the mood overly much, what's with the no-sex-before- marriage-vow and such... so unless he takes a leaf out of Bill Clintons book, he'll just be left frustrated if she does get in the mood for physical fun.

I would agree with everyone on here that has suggested blade Runner....awesome flick.
I have seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter at the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain...."

Come on guys, stop suggesting trash movies ... Avatar? Sure if you want to read Pocahontis in Space with Giant Smurfs that rape animals. Yes, thats right.

Want to introduce her to movies that she might like that you like, so that you could continue to like these movies together, I would suggest 5th Element and 13th Warrior for sure, followed by something like Alien and possibly V for Vendetta. GF likes some of these movies more than I do, and she is not a big sci-fi/fantasy movie buff.

To be honest it was more of a "I want you to watch films I like" thing but instead of being selfish I said I would watch some of her crappy ones too. Not neccessarily trying to "be drawn closer" and especially not for sexy timez (see Sombras post above) but more just a bit of fun. :) Great suggestions all though, going to have to get two lists going - a backup one as well, in case she becomes a nerd like me. :)

Mega Force - it has the coolest motorbike in the entire history of film motorbikes (okay, with the possible exception of Kaneda's bike in Akira, but that's it).
