So,

I made a deal with my girlfriend. We will both write a list of 10 films we want the other to watch and then over time watch the entirety of the list. I am writing a sci-fi one and she is doing a lame chick flick one. It should be fun. Anyways I am opening up suggestions of good Sci-Fi films to put on there. I have a good idea what I want to put on there based on the films I love - so Serenity (which I managed to wrangle Firefly into the deal), District 9, the new Star Trek, the original Star Wars trilogy (which count as 1 film!)

I also thought other, more horror tinged ones like Event Horizon etc. even though she doesn't really like horror, I thought it would be good to add them. But I am open to suggestions and stuff from any of you guys! There is, as far as I'm concerned, far too much choice...

Aliens(2nd), Predator (original), Moon are some films that come to mind

Is this a list which you two are watching together or a list of things to watch individually?

Blade Runner should make the list. Also, Stardust might be a great hybrid of your lists. My girl loves it and the other couple I lent it to also loved it.

If she puts The Notebook on there, go for it. It's very chick flicky, but damn, it's powerful stuff.

IF you can find a copy - then Mega Force - one of the greatest sci-fi films of the 80's. Seriously, I saw this once, when I was a kid, and I still vividly remember how amazingly crap it was.

Barry Bostwick as Commander Ace Hunter - You just can't beat character names like that.

On a somewhat more serious (and personal) note - might I suggest Flash Gordon?

No we are going to watch together, so I don't need any crossover stuff, I don't need to try and get any of her stuff into my list. Was thinking of getting Blade Runner on there as it's a classic.

Pitch Black?

I always tell people to watch The Fountain -- I think it's a great film. OK, it's not exactly sci-fi but...it's still a good film.

Is this a strictly sci-fi list? I can think of lots of other really good films, I'm struggling to think of sci-fi though, at the moment...

Made a small correction there since you obviously forgot that this was supposed to be the opposite of chick flicks.

Dune is a classic must watch as is Blade Runner. I'd throw in some anime like Akira, Cowboy Bebop, or Full Metal Alchemist (yeah it's childish in places but solid overall). Add Ergo Proxy and Gundam Wing (if she goes for the anime thing). I'll second Serenity. Pitch Black is good if she goes for the horror edge.

Thanks chaps. Not a huge Star Trek fan so I wouldn't go for the older ones but I found the newest one very enjoyable. Definitely want to see both Pandorum and Primer myself, will watch them and decide, though Pandorum looked very similar to Event Horizon... Don't know anything about Impostor - will check it out! Not such a huge fan of Pitch Black, dunno why. Sorry no Anime, not a massive fan though I did enjoy Akira. Also going to add Cloverfield. Not sure if that would be Sci-Fi strictly... But it doesn't have to be pure sci-fi! I have the Fountain, haven't got round to watching it yet.

Oh, I forgot, Dark City. Freak'n love that movie. I'll be thinking on this list for a while. Maybe, if you want to go old school; Krull, Dragonslayer (not exactly top of the heap but I loved them as a child). Also, Matrix (stated), Thirteenth Floor, and of course you've got to have her watch Legend of the Seeker - that will win her over for sure.

Hmm, Starship Troopers? I won't suggest more cause I find my tastes often differing from others. I will say this though; I've seen Predator recommended several times and although I agree it is a good movie I must state that I tried to get my girlfriend to watch it and she nearly fell asleep so I ended up turning it off. I actually read somewhere that guys shouldn't get their girlfriends to watch Predator for whatever and it surprised me to find that adivce holding true.

Not exactly a sci fi movie, but there is time travel. so my 2 cents is Back to the Future.

Or A Clockwork Orange. But the gf might have some trouble with some scenes.

Gattaca. Great movie. Don't think it was mentioned yet. And The Fly (1986). Each movie mentioned above is worth watching. You should make make it 20 movies, or you'll have to leave out some really good ones.

I have trouble believing she wouldn't have already seen Back to the Future or the Terminator movies.

Anyway I'm going to second Gattaca, I believe that really needs to be on the list more than a lot of the other suggestions in this thread. I think you want to avoid simple action flicks with her (at least I would), go for more thoughtful movies. How about Children of Men? It was a pretty awesome movie in my view.

After this list is done, if she's wanting more you can send her stuff like Akira or 2001: A Space Odyssey. But only if you think she'd be ok with less "accessible" fare.
