Sad. You're right about his overindulgence in huge tracts of expository text though. I couldn't even get through 'The Eagle' properly, and I have long considered that series one of the very best of all time. To have so much 'blah blah blah' and then all the major stuff happens off-camera at the end, and we still have no idea because it's all third-hand accounts.

Didn't mind the first Templar book, but again the second one stymied me.

Maybe it's all some sort of 'before the legend' type thing like with Ridley Scott's Robin Hood. About as successful in it's execution too, I dare say. :)

Indeed. I think his time is behind us. There is something like 5 years that separate his writing of the The Sorceror: Metamorphosis and Clothar The Frank, and the change is completely visible in his writing between those volumes. It's as if he had some sort of strange epiphany in between and ever since his writing has been subpar. Because the first 6 books of the camulod series are solid, it's only Clothar and Eagle that suffer.
