…keeps imagining the Tiste races as variants on Drow?
I mean…dark or near black skin, Long hair = Drow, White skin, long hair = Norn (sub-race of Drow)
I’m worried I’m the only one who might still be thinking this even as far into the series as MT!!

No. You're not the only one. It was commented on a lot in the beginning. Same with the ridiculous look of Rake having white hair.

I suppose a comparison with elves is inevitable when discussing a race of near immortals. Which is a pity, since the Tiste are so much more than "just more elves".

As for the subject at hand, I keep them in my mind as a sort of a cross between elves and genies. In 1.5x scale.

But yes, the descriptions does make me think of elves, except taller, more built elves.. and more badass.. and no pointy ears. Ok so maybe not that elvish anyway...

Guys, re rake, check into Elric of Melniboné, from Michael Moorcock...- while there may be visual similarities to drow, the real influence lies there...

Hmmm…well, I’d say there are similarities certainly but not enough to make a more direct link.
For example Elric is an albino and not actually indicative of his “race” physically. As for his sword (Stormbringer), the use of sentient swords of that type is well known…there’s one in the Drizzt novels as well, which as the series progresses has been taking more and more of its owners “soul” as it where. I’m sure there are examples elsewhere also.
Influences sure but there are significant differences too. Considering it again, my post was really also revolving around the attitude of the Tiste races…their aloof mental nature and the fact that they find themselves on a world not their own. No just physical references I noted to Drow but these mental ones too (especially reading MT…we find the cruel streak in the Tiste that is very “Drow-like”).
It was just the “whole package” struck me as racially similar to Drow and I have to admit to the fact that I see Drow in my mind when reading passages where Tiste are involved.

I image the Tiste races as being somewhat similar in appearance to Sephiroth.

Nice catch. Erikson was somwhat concerned about the similarity between

Obviously there are similarities between D&D and the malazan world, seeing as a lot of memory worthy characters and places was created while gaming D&D.

I always went the Warcraft III route, with: Jaghut=Orcs, Tiste Andii=Night Elves, and T'lan Imass=Undead.
I'm pretty sure I picture Andii with elf ears, and maybe the Liosan, but definitely not the Edur.

I believe Barghast are supposed to be much better-looking than orcs, so I don't imagine them that way. They're ancestors of two well-know species, neither of which are supposed to look orcish. And Hetan has been described as good-looking, actually the only problem with the Barghast women in that respect might be a slightly unwashed look..
So I think of them a bit like oversized imass, maybe.
The Trell I imagine shaped like a non-green Hulk, slightly smaller. With some differences in the jaw department.
