What are the mechanics of the hammer Brood carries around? It seemed like from the explanation provided at the beginning that the hammer would destroy all 'civilization' if Brood smashes it against the ground.

-Does that include all human/mortal civilization and the entire natural world? Or are the other gods and ascendants part of this party too? What exactly would be wiped out?

-Brood ends up swinging the hammer against the ground and all it does is create a mountain range. Erikson doesn't even mention if anyone in the group of people who were in close to the hammer die.

-At the end Brood is holding the Hammer over his head and asks Burn to forgive him. I assume something that would wipe out everyone involved in the conflict was about to happen if he let the hammer fall. So, can the extent of damage caused by the hammer be controlled by the person swinging it?

On a side note, how the hell did Rake get Moons Spawn into Coral Bay? Apparently the seer didn't know it was there (lol moment). And why did Korlat think he was dead?

I'll stop there before I go overload with the questions. Thanks for any help, with out the answers on these forums I'd be totally lost. Posted Image

Moon's spawn was submerged into into the sea somewhere else, and it was moved to Coral through a underwater strait (don't remember the name of this, but Quick Ben knows it and mentions its name). Korlat (and Paran) both could not make mental contact with Rake, that's why they believed he was dead. Because they did not hear any comment from him on the dramatic happenings in Capustan either, maybe.

can't say for sure about the hammer now. It was directed at Kruppe, not the earth, so I understood it. Kruppe is a special being, and he survived it without getting a scratch. Don't remember if anyone was killed, but I believe it was said no one was. And only Brood can wake up Burn with the hammer, and I believe no he cannot control the extent of its effect, so he chooses not to do it.Posted Image

It's very similar to Maxwell's Silver Hammer, just packs a bigger punch.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

It is said that if Brood hits the ground strong enough with the Hammer, Burn would wake up(i.e. gigantic cataclysms), wipe all civilization, free herself of the CG and start anew. However Brood can still use the hammer to "only" ,say, generate earthquakes or create new mountain ranges.

so to say he hit the ground provoked and annoyed by Kruppe, but not hard enough to cause the ultimate effect. people were startled enough by the earthquake however.

yes it was K'rul, but still Kruppe is special :).
I was saying to wake Burn, Brood would have had to strike harder.

I don't believe we know how Kruppe avoided damage when Brood took a swing at him. Obviously he has a connection with K'rul, but I don't think its specifically stated that he intervened there. It could have just been something about Kruppe's own power that protected him.
So, you're the historian who survived the Chain of Dogs.
Actually, I didn't.

It seems you stand alone.
It was ever thus.
