I've been pronouncing it mu-LAZ-zun, but thinking about how Erikson could pronounce it, I've been wondering about other names and words he may say out loud at book signings and the like.

I think it's Mal-a-zan.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I emphasize Mal in my head, similar to the name Salazar I guess. MAL-uh-zahn (the end like Steve Zahn, not a flat zan). Luckily, I never have to say it aloud since nobody I know has read them.

How many ways can there be? Why do yo pronounce it 'mu' when it's 'ma'? It's like that guy a while back who pronounced Anomander as Anom-MUN-der.
I would say it was pronounced as it is spelt, Mal-ah-Zan.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I put the stress on the first syllable.
And I have more problems as to how I should pronounce 'K'chain Che'Malle' or 'Trygalle'.
The T'lan Imass names I pronounce like they are written, but as no one of us knows their language it may be otherwise...

Hah, I remember that guy. There was also "Duss-em" instead of "Dass-em." I think people from India substitute U's for A's a lot.

The sound of a vowel changes depending on whether the containing syllable is stressed or not. Unstressed vowels often come out as an "uh" sound, which is technically named the "schwa".
When I say "Malazan", I stress the first syllable a lot, the last syllable a little, and the middle one not at all. Hence: MAL-uh-zan.
I don't know about this Duss-em guy, but he could just be writing "u" for his unstressed vowels.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I once read that SE pronounces it like "mul-ay-sian" (I blow at phonetics) so of like Malaysia. I could have been drunk/stoned when I read that, though, because I've never seen it since.
Either way, I pronounce it Mal-uh-zan, with the second syllable not stressed at all.

uhm, that should be 'stuff.' My stiff is never nihilistic.

You're not alone, but I can't find it either.

We discussed it in the Chicago US meet-up thread.
Evidently we didn't. The fuck? I know we discussed how we all said it differently, must have been in a different thread.
Aha! There's a thread about how you pronounce Malazan names and things somewhere around here. I'll go search....

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Keep reading. Mal and Hetan's pronunciations are the official ones, I believe.

I always enjoyed the glossary with pronunciations at the end of the Wheel of Time books. I remember how much Aes Sedai surprised me. Anyway, I always thought I was pretty good at pronouncing the Malazan words, but I now realize I must be very wrong a lot of the time. An official list would be pretty nice.
