This has been bothering me for some time, why do Rud and Shurq Ellale share a name when the former is the son of a slave and a God and the latter is an unrelated, dead pirate?

Perhaps they share a relation from a Mecros city.

That's true. But Clip and Clip aren't related. Except that Clip ate Clip after Clip unloaded a clip into Clip in the 3rd chapter of House of Clip. Can't wait for ICE's next novel, Return of the Clipson Guard.
Furthermore, Hawl and Hawl are not the same person at all. Hawl and Hawl are actually 2 of 3 identical triplets (the third is Gaul). But Nok got into a brawl with Hawl one day and wound up boning Hawl in the caul of his ship (boy did she bawl) during a squall. So its understandable if y'all confuse Hawl and Hawl (Hawl is more tall).

No. Menandore brought Rud to a Meckros city where he was raised by Shurq's uncle. The city was destroyed and everybody drowned except Rud who was saved by Menadore in her dragon form. She then brought him in the Refugium to live with Ulshun Pral and the other Imass.

true. I am assuming the crippled god destroyed this city, from the beginning of MT, and this is when he stole Withal. What I cant figure out was he also intending to kill Rud. I remember the scene where Menadore is saying that "you cant have him, I am assuming she is saying the to the crippled god.
