I put it down to a combination of factors, chief oh which is that the majority of the players are a big bunch of goat-fucking braindead cockfaces.

They're overpaid wankers, just like pretty much all professional athletes. They should get paid only if they win.

Not to derail this from the USA's achievements in this world cup, but credit to New Zealand. A team with no professional league and only one professional team hold the Italians, current World Champions, to a 1-1 draw. They even sent on a player who had to get time of from work to go play in the biggest football tournament in the world.

Yeah man LOVING New Zealand at the moment. Playing a lot better football than some of the big guns.

Rodeo, in answer to your question, England have some of the highest paid and potentially best players, and on paper should be able to do quite well, and in comparison to their group they should have had no massive challenges getting through. However they have played very poorly together and acted like a bunch of part time amateurs. Who, now I think about it, might have actually beaten Algeria...

At least everybody can now look down on France. One point and last in their group. Couldn't be worse. At least England and USA have two points each.

don't know about everybody.

there are a few teams facing the chance of nil points......

including, sadly, Cameroon.
Like a LOT of people my age, I have a soft spot for them for their achievements at Italia '90

Mainly the astonishing Roger Milla. It's supposed he was about 38 years old at the time. But there was no actual certainty as to his birthdate. And if he WAS 38, it means he started his professional career at age 13........
meh. Link was dead :(

West African footballers and the age thing is brilliant. They're all actually about 10 years older than they say, and even they don't seem to know when they were actually born. I swear Kanu has to be 65 by now.

It will be picking them up from Heathrow airport on Thursday.

Still beat the French (Air France apparently on strike, so they won't get home at all).

I have my own theory, as to the popularity of the sport worldwide (and this broad umbrella term includes many, many poor countries).

it is, quite frankly, the CHEAPEST sport for kids to play. you need ONE piece of equipment--a ball. that's it.

it can be played anywhere. hell, a ROCK can be used as a post to deliniate a goal.

THAT is the bare-bones reason why people in developing countries love football. you don't need a basketball net, you don't need a bat and gloves, you don't need an egg-shaped ball to play. just 2-3 people with a ball, and you could get some crazy fun time in a game.

and that is one argument that cannot be truly beaten, :D

also, though this will upset many, I sincerely wish that Slovenia win tomorrow. and if Ghana pulls an upset v. Germany i'd be shocked and lost in thought. on the one hand, Ghana is great, on the other, Germany's my favourite to win, once the Slavs drop out.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

See, now the USA can claim to have won a game. I think they are getting there.

The reason the sport is popular around the world is because it is so ace. The reason the sport is not popular in the USA is because they didn't invent and they aren't the only ones that play it so they can't claim to be world champions at it. Simple as... :)

Italy got twice as many points... on the other hand, they also had a considerably easier group.

I wonder if the US can put a spin on it stating that somehow they won the game against Ghana?

You do realize that was sarcastic, right? Or do you just like beating a dead-horse?
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Yes. A fine example is how poor British cricket fans have discovered how painful it is to have invented a sport and never been able to win a world championship.
