I keep falling asleep, yet sposed to go out in a bit. Can't really cancel as I did last week, then gave this as the only day I could do. But it's going to be an awful evening. Awful.

I've been up since 1:30 PM yesterday. except for the 3.5 hours of classes, where I was mostly zoned out.

and tonight, the residence is throwing a "fundraising social" (kegger). And i'm supposed to be in charge of selling drink tickets.

it's gonna be a loooooong night.

I went to the symphony last night!

Now I need some crude drink to get rid of this strange notion of classiness... Tequila over here barman!

They started off with some really boring contemporary piece. It was supposed to be in memoriam of someone, but to me that means it should sound something like lonely grief, the kind of music that would go with a funeral right? Well this was more like music to accompany genocide or the apocalypse. Which sounds far more interesting that the song was.

After that was a 3-movement Schubert piano concerto, with a (apparently) famous pianist named Rada Lupu or something like that.

Last was a 4-movement Brahms symphony. It was pretty good, but I liked the 3rd movement better than the 4th. The trombones didn't seem to play at all for the first 3 movements...

Tequila? You won't be nearly drunk enough.

Here have this:

"Darkwatch's Flaming Fist"

-3 parts 94% Alcohol
-2 parts Gin
-1/2 ounce of vodka
-1 part red grappa
-1 part flaming sambuca

Sounds like a good night all told on the music side, except for the contemporary piece. Was it at the NAC?

What the heck is grappa?

And yeah, at the NAC with the NACO, and it was FREE!

Free? Lucky you, win the tickets?
They once had Tchaikovsky's 1812 being played in it's entirety here, the tickets were 200$. Didn't go.

Grappa is alcohol made from the leftovers of winemaking (pomace, skins, seeds, stems). The Italian haggis of booze. Goes up to 60%.

I want to go to a symphony, preferably built around 19th century romantic composition or early 20th century composers around the verge of "Modern."
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Free = I went with a friend who had a random connection that got us a voucher for 2 free tickets, subject to availability. There was actually a lot of free seats (and for some reason the lady at the box office made a big deal about being able to see the pianist/conductor's hands? And we were like "As long as it sounds okay we don't care where we are sitting!" and she thought we were strange for not appreciating being able to see their hands...)

that sounds familiar. I think my mom's friend told a similar story, but at a different venue.

Well, if you play the instrument/conduct I guess you could appreciate the person's abilities. Otherwise I have no clue why it would be such a big deal. Considering I wouldn't be able to tell between a good faker and a proper player.

It's Sunday, I've confirmed the presence of a cold and or flu in me and I had a very long series of screwed up dreams last night.

Otherwise, good breakfast today and awesome supper last night.

my next door neighbour, the Ukrainian RA, who hails form the same parts as my grandparents, had his birthday yesterday. I was invited to a quiet celebraiton in his room. it included a lot of the home-rewed apple wine. that stuff tastes delicious, but punches you when you're not looking.

As such, i'm now quite slightly inebriated. on a Monday night. with a 9AM class tomorrow.

I don't know if I should be happy or angry. so I post this in the Pub, which is like the neutral thread.

I'd say that if you wake up with no hang over you're fine.

I'm sick, with cold or flu. Not sure which, I can never really tell.

Otherwise, I just sent in my first project of the session, now I just have to worry about two exams and one hell of a long project coming up.

I was a total n00b at the shooting range yesterday. Got ready to fire, nothing happened. Tried again, still nothing. Dude says to check safety. Safety is ON. Try again. Nothing happens. Gun not cocked properly. Finally get to shoot, bullets go everywhere. Next round: Managed to hit myself in the eye with my hearing protection. Still hurts :)

I need something to soothe my bruised ego...and eye.
