Or it's a Rakeism. I think his eyes change colour elsewhere in the series, though I'm not 100% on that. He might just be special that way. Maybe something in TtH about his eyes mirroring the colour of the sea when Crone meets him on the balcony?

Regardless, this is a great interpretation!

I'm also fairly certain Korlat's eyes changed their colour in MoI on several occasions, particularly when WJ pissed her off.

Nope - happens in other books, right through to Toll the Hounds. Multi-facetted? I think that was Silanah?. Rakes are described as multi-hued.


Korlat's eyes they are described as follows in MoI :-

'A tall, martial woman with midnight skin...extraordinary, almond-shaped eyes the colour of sun-bleached grass...Korlat, second to Anomander Rake.'

'Her violet eyes...'

I think it looks great, the skin, the hair, everything. The third option is the most interesting, but I would definitely change the colour, per Hetan's comment:)

@Hetan, Grimhilde, masan's saddle: Your remark about changing the eye colour made me realize that I had a special scene in mind when I was drawing this (quote from encyclopedia):

"'We will hunt Kallor down, my brother and I'"

I feel I kind of hold on to the red eyes, this transports the feeling I have for this scene best (Though I imagine them turning black after sometime). Take it as artistic liberty... :p

I also have a problem with the vertical pupils, I don't remember it from the books (which means nothing). But it certainly fits the cold Tiste Andii...

But of course I made a violet vertical pupils closeup... I was curious, too :D.

It's quite hard to give them a focus and I think they look very cold, not the burning feeling I had in mind.
I will try them in other poses and scenes, but I'm not convinced yet...

(Aside of that: I don't even have the smallest clue haw to draw facetted eyes :o)

@Dutch: I'm up to my ears in my thesis for months. Took some time off to make this and I must admit, I'm surprised by myself...:p This is certainly the best I ever made...

This was actually chance... I'm working with different leayers in one picture and was just clicking through the several eye-layers when this came out. Its really version one + version two... "The whole is more than the sum of its parts"... Posted Image

I think cold suits her - they are a cold cold people - not hot at all - she's a soletaken and draconic blood is often referred to as cold :o

I like the violet too :p

@Hetan: Yes, I agree. The Andii are a very cold people, nearly dead inside. But Korlat seems to be different, the coldness inside her seems to be a part of herself she isn't completely accepting. quotes from the encyclopedia:

"She approached her companions, preparing her mind for the veering into her draconic form. The power that came with the transition had always frightened her, for it was a cold, hard manifestation, unhuman and inhuman both."
MoI, US HB, p.489

To me that sounds as if she wants to be human, or feels that a part of her deserves human feelings. AND she is in love! Or she tries at least.

There is something inside her. And it's not so farfetched as you try to make it seem that it is burning after losing her love.


But after all, this is just an argument between opinions... And I must admit that I'm no further in the series than Bonehunters, so perhaps I'm missing some crucial information...


So, I try to make everyone happy (one of my minor flaws), and post both versions!

I'm glad to know someone liked it!

By the way, how do you draw these? On a paper then virtually paint it or what?

In case you are wondering, I drew mine with my mouse (yes, I am skilled) and I painted it virtually.

@SalokinX: I use a graphic tablet and the free painting program gimp.
This piece is completely digital. But you can also make a scrap on paper, scan it and paint it digital.
I find it easyer to draw digital because the colours stay "wet", you can mix and blur them all the time, you can delete your mistakes and if you work with layers you can give Korlat a different eye colour without changing the whole picture. :laughing:
