Hi all,

Just doing another re-read of RG and have a question or two about the spear that Seren found:

1) both Clip and Silchas seem to know the Spear
2) Silchas seems to fear it for a reason
3) Clip says its an Imass spear

So the questions are as follows:

1) Who did the spear originally belong to?
2) why would it seem that Silchas has a slight fear of it?
3) does this mean that the Imass or whover originally owned it had fought with Silchas in the past?

I know why Icarium fears spears later as well as clip but this specific one is a bit strange....

My theory ... and it could be well off the wall or been discussed to death in other posts (that I havent found)

1) The spear could have originally belonged to Edgewalker (as he has been described as looking like an Imass (against the grain of elemental force but one never knows)
2) the spear is the spear of the knight of shadow..... Trull and whover may have had that role in the holds etc etc and the finding of it was poignant as it was Seren who found it and as Silchas said when Udinaas was using it... its not yours but is basically a loaner and will have to be given up i.e to its rightfull owner....

It was the Spear of the Bonecaster who sacrificed herself to stop the death of the realm were all the Imass lived. I don't think Silchas feared it, he was more, I think, showing respect for what its owner did.

dunno so much about that as Silchas would not have known about her having been in the barrow for so long and the fact that it was hidden in the ice and not in the realm where she had tried to seal the gate.....

pg 480 bantam books paper back

Clips laugh was bitterly cruel. "Oh, the injustice, Acquitor. For a storied weapon such as that one."

She frowned at him. "You speak as if you recognise it. Do you?"
"Let's just say it belongs with us"

The spear drew attention, frighteningly fast from Silchas Ruin, who - before he spun to face her - seemed to flinch.

This to me doesn't sound anything like showing respect...

i always thought that it was the "spear in the ice" of gothos ritual. this spear of ice or w.e is mentioned a few times but it's never made clear if its a metaphor or a literal spear of the ritual, like a finnest that anchored the ice or something. gothos uses an imass knife to house scabandaris soul, which is said to be a curious choice. gothos replies that that is the only kind of choice he makes. i could see him using another imass weapon to anchor the ritual.

plus around this time, the ritual is dying. seren's party is walking through a melting glacier, which cracks open to reveal its sorcerous heart

Seren buries it with the marriage sword in her courtyard, so I am assuming her son will get it.

I thought Crokus/Cutter had possession of the spear
Spoiler

Maybe I'm thinking of something completely different.

The Spear Crokus has is a completely different one. It's the one the Seguleh 2nd leaves behind after his chat with Crokus.

that is a different one. In fact, I believe it was a lance rather than a spear.

i thought the spear of ice that was mentioned was more just like a giant icicle that held the CG's sword

In book 5, maybe.

In book 7 it is specifically described as a beautifully wrought spear of 'horn,' I believe. I'm not sure what it is or how if fits, but someone says above they know why Clip fears spears, but it is the opposite. He boasts that he's never met a spearman he couldn't carve into pieces, drawing a snort from Fear and a smile from Seren - both thinking of Trull, naturally.

Also, no one has mentioned that the spear could be of Tiste Andii signifigance - as both Clip and Ruin are Andii and we're north of Bluerose and the Onyx Wizards at the moment.
