So, any thoughts on Nintendo's big announcement?

It's true they've suffered a loss of direction over the last few years - but is taking on the candy crush market going to kill or cure?

Judging by the skyrocketing shares in Nintendo after the last couple of days, I'd say people are optimistic.

So, this is a thing now:



Empire, Dwarves, Greenskins and Vampire Counts confirmed. Chaos VERY STRONGLY HINTED AT.

I want this, but I want it about a year and a half post-release, with all the inevitable DLC bundled in, and all the other races added in. I will even give Creative Assembly full price at that point to reward their hard work.

I'll wait until they release the High Elves and Skaven DLCs. At that point they might even have ironed out the majority of the major bugs.

When that is said, I am genuinely excited about this. It's been a while since I played a proper, combat focused strategy game, and I very much look forwards to recreating my armies and crushing all oposition.

I haven't played Total War since I dabbled in Medieval II a bit. I want to go back to it, and re-create some of my epic campaigns. And then try some of the amazing mods for both Rome and Medieval II.

Alas, I am no longer a student with all the free time in the world, and my gaming time's becoming ever-more strictly regulated by life.

Where are the CHAOS DEFILERS?

Anyway, I've been playing Prince of Persia. Fluff, for the most part, especially as you can't die (although the combat system is pretty unbalanced). One of my mates at work has loaned me KOTOR so I'll be playing that through shortly.

Almighty Sigmar! *gasp*
WHF and 40k are pretty cool settings; it's a pity they're so seldom used in vidja games. Much better than War- and Starcraft, I'd say. What I'm still waiting for, however, is an RPG set in either of the aforementioned worlds. With a corruption meter!

I actually posted a long comment on thiss issue today over @ Rock Paper Shotgun.

The gist is, I don't think you'll ever see an RPG utilizing either setting to its full potential.

The reason being, each setting is a kitchensink of all the fantasy or sci-fi tropes GW could think of, which distills to "a whole bunch of cool races with rich backstories THAT HATE EVERYONE ELSE"

The warhammer settings are essentially genocidal. There's virtually no room for diplomacy, or complex intrigue on a truly epic, civilization-affecting scale. Sure, each INDIVIDUAL society (race) is easily complex enough to provide for an interesting story- in fact, in Dawn of War 2 trilogy we saw such an attempts in a tavtical RTS/RPG-lite.

But knowing that this is merely one race out of like 15-20, you as the player will never feel like you are achieving something "supremely epic"- because your "epic struggle" is probably some backwater of known space, and there are hundreds of similar stories happening everywhere.

The settings are designed with an implicit understanding "if anny faction was strong enough to destroy everyone else, it'd do it in a blink of an eye. None can, so there's a sstatus quo of sorts. For now".

Making an interesting RPG would mean subverting the canon, which has always been basically

The one truly rich RPG setting that hasn't been utilized at all is the Vlad Taltos series by Stephen Brust.

We don't have to be Vlad himself, but the open, yet well defined world with many interesting bosses and ancient history parts is a goldmine for a video game.

It would actually be easy to make it into a video game similar to Assassin's Creed or something like that - with more options to resolve things without violence as Vlad occasionally does.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I would also pay large sums of money for a Shadowrun/Arcanum-style* New Crobuzon RPG.

* not that I don't think a 3D RPG exploring New Crobuzon wouldn't be cool. I just don't see any studio/publisher pouring such insane amount of money into such an obscure setting.

Primal Carnage is a Counter-strike'ish Nazi-dinosaurs versus Allied Soldiers FPS multiplayer game.

It's pretty basic but a novel idea.

I'm not sure I agree. There's plenty of lore covering diplomacy and cooperation between the "good" races (High Elves, Wood Elves, Bretton, Dwarves and the Empire). Sure, they fight plenty of wars too, but I don't see how an RPG would be difficult in that setting.

And here was me thinking Primal Carnage was Dinosaurs vs Hunters. I know the one with the Nazi Dinosaurs but it's a different game.

I bought Shadows of Mordor off Steam at -66% sale for the expanded edition, 25 EUR. I wonder when I'll actually play it.... :)

Not sure if you've done your research but you should keep a few things in mind about KOTOR2.

It's not made by Bioware but instead developed by Obsidian. The game was rushed and a lot of content was cut to reach the desired release date. As such the story is unfinished and there's bugs everywhere.

Luckily there are fan made mods that have rectified a lot of the games problems, including content that restores some of the missing pieces.
