My follow up question will undoubtedly make you do this XD a few times though i have no idea what it means.
How exactly do I get a mod of a game? Are there many steps to it or is it a simple click to download dealy?
If it wasnt for people like you on this website I would be sat alone in the dark with a candle reading a book, which is coincidentally how I got interested in the site in the first place

Hehe, my personal catch-all emote. Basically a cross between and >.< (eyes together in an "oops" expression), so laughing at something a bit silly/confusing, either that I've done or that is being discussed.
As for your question...it varies, I'm afraid. Different games, different mods, all have different requirements for install. Some come with installers, just like a game. Others you have to manually copy+paste files and folders into the right place. And the difference between getting the mod in the right place and getting it to run on the game can be large, too - some games require you to modify the .exe/shortcut details, others (like, say, Skyrim on the PC) have a built-in function on the launcher to select which mods you want running.
Unfortunately I'm not that familiar with M2:TW modding and how the requirements vary based on the mod, but it sounds like you're looking at a total conversion/large expansion/faction replacer mod, so I'd say it really depends on how geared for modding the base game is.
I do know that some other folks on this site play a lot of Total War games, though (I personally never found the need or desire to mod the base games, they were fun enough imo), so you might have luck there. Otherwise a quick Google or visiting the place where the mod is hosted is likely to give you a quicker answer than we can here (I know past Total War games have had quite active modding communities which suggests good support on that end, but that doesn't mean the end-user experience is not something that requires a computer science degree, sadly).
So yeah, sorry about that, bit outside my area of experience in terms of modding. XD (See? I restrained myself! Only one "XD" required! )

It definitely depends on the game. Some studios actively support mods for their games and will release mod tools and help share and distribute these mods. An example of this is Bethesda whose games are practically sold on the idea of there beings tons of content in the future created by the fanbase. Other studios, usually publisher controlled ones focusing on DLC and mini-transactions are firmly against mods and it's up to the userbase to see if they can make a work around. DICE for example does not support mods.
If it's a Steam game you can look at the games page and see if it has Steam Works support which is a hub meant to collect mods for a game and make them easily downloadable and installs them for you with no fuss.
Otherwise you can look for hubs that specialise in developing and distributing mods like for example:

Most good mod makers deliver tutorials and FAQs with their files making it easier to find out how to install them. You can also check out youtube for step by step run throughs on how to install a mod.
Usually it involves downloading some files, unpacking them and inserting certain folders into the files of the game you want to modify. It's usually relatively simple once you've done it a few times but sometimes it can be a real pain in the ass if you have to download other programmes and mods just to make the mod you want to install in the first place.
The best advice I can give you is to just dive in to the deep end. Google everything and see where the rabbit hole of gibberish takes you.

mods have readmes. If there's file shuffling involved, a readme usually tells you exactly where to put what.
Other mods come with executable installers.
The place where you download a mod from (a forum, or a dedicated site, like moddb), usually include instructions on how to get mods running. In general, I've found modders to be failry helpful, as they want to get their mods to as many ppl as they can.

the post you linked leads to the latest iteration of the mod. I'd guess you need to find the orignal version, and work your way from there.
Going on ModDB, seems that you can just install 1.5
here's a run-down on what to do. and yes, it does require Kingdoms apparently

You know what's vastly messing with my groove? Lack of auto-save in X-COM. These days like every game has it, or at least a "Restart Mission" button. But not X-COM. It will let you load a game from two hours back. FFS.

pfft, auto-save. This is X-COM we're talking about. The best you can hope for is saving your game before a mission starts.
Still haven't gotten around to playing the new one, but with that I heard Ironman is the only way to really experience the game.

You have to set it to 'Classic'. Ironman is optional, but then I never save more than one slot anyway. Classic is the way to do it. I do kind of miss unloading 24 soldiers at the beginning of every mission, though. Ahh nostalgia.

Blah blah blah blah. Still doesn't help with, say, power outages, or the game crashing due to a fucking ancient bug that kicks in if you try to use overwatch on a laser rifle... progress lost, tyvm!

In other news today is my birthday and my gf got a 12 month xbox live subscription singehandedly proving that a)shes a keeper and b)she is incredibly naive to think this will not rape any ounce of spare time I get.
So for now the medieval 2 mods will be put on hold but I shall have a go at them soon I assure you fine gents

I guess this falls into the category of complaining about "free" stuff, which is whatever, but what's more interesting is their absolute deafness. Like someone had to tap someone on the shoulder to let them know what everybody else was thinking. And on the other hand, is there even a bigger insult you can offer a person than assuming they enjoy tower defense games? I mean in certain neighborhoods in my community even mentioning the subgenre in a positive light yourself could get you hurt, let alone accusing others.

Cross game chat, playing a game before it finishes downloading (and choosing which section to make playable first), video uploads, PSN app, switching between an active game and other stuff then being able to resume the game (all nice and smooth and quick), decent background downloading, getting from game to game quickly, and anything else I forgot.
