The Karate Kid remake

I just caught an advanced screening. I wouldn't have even gone if it hadn't been free. I went in expecting a load of crap. It was...excellent. Once I was able to get over myself and quit bitching about differences from the original, I really enjoyed it.
I'm not saying it was flawless. Some of the inspirational messages were a little heavy-handed. Jaden Smith, and therefore all of his friends and enemies, were a bit young. It worked though. There was some shoddy editing, and a couple of shaky-cam fights, which I hate but are a fact of life in modern Hollywood.
It will never have the same place in my heart as the original, but if you forget nostalgia, and remember the 80's cheesiness of the original, this is actually probably a better movie. Good remake.
I just wish I wasn't supporting scientology by watching it.

Or you could view it as putting more money in Jackie Chan's pocket.
That's a worthy cause right there - for Rumble in the Bronx alone.

That is a worthy cause. He was excellent in this movie. He played a great Mr...Han. Yeah, they changed his name from Miyagi. I was annoyed, but then I realized that is a Japanese name, and Jackie Chan is Chinese. So, fair enough.

Have to disagree a little there.
Drunken Master 1 & 2, Project A 1 & 2, Dragons Forever, and Armour of God 1 are all vastly superior films Amp, and therefore more deserving of financial reward.
Having said that, for dross like the medallion, the tuxedo and the accidental spy.....

Looks like more of a family film than the original, but I have tentative hope anyway. As a rental at least.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

The original, and even the two sequels, were painfully chaste family friendly fare. Sure, Ralph Macchio gets hit in the face a lot, but watching him bleed out of his head is really just good family fun when you get right down to it.

It is still very much a family film, possibly even more so because of the young age of Jaden Smith.
I'm not saying everyone needs to run to the theater to see it. I don't know about paying full price for it, but it is certainly worth your time and maybe a matinee price.
My biggest bitch with the movie?

Having thought about it, if Jaden Smith spends a chunk of time bleeding out of his head, i will go see it.

Drunken Master 1 is a mess to watch. It's got the occasional flash of brilliant fight scenes, but the plot is awfully non-linear in spots and some of the fight scenes aren't good. I haven't seen the other movies, so I'll get cracking on that.

Drunken master 2 is even more of a mess story wise, but arguably some of the best fights he's ever done.
Project A 1 and Dragons Forever = the Trinity of Jackie, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao, and are therefore beyond exemplary.
edit - great bar fight from Project A: here

Project A 2 and Drunken Master 2 are my favorites, the first entries are good though but not quite as exciting...the sequels are JC at his peak. I'm not sure if I've seen Dragons Forever, but Wheels on Meals is a great movie with that trinity, and really shows off how skilled Sammo is (especially with weapons) despite his size.

What I like about the film is that in the original Pat Morita, born and raised in California had never thrown a punch in his life before the first film and knew squat about Karate....
....Jackie Chan has been completely immersed in Kung Fu for his entire life. That gets me in the goddamned theatre seat. End of story.

Oh, and WHO AM I is also a really great Benny Chan-directed Jackie Chan flick. Beyond that, those mentioned above are pretty goddamned awesome! Rumble is good, but I think it's gets more credit because it was the first American theatre released Chan film that started his popularity worldwide.
The more I see the trailers for the New Karate Kid the more I am down with seeing it. Thanks for the review RLY!!

Wow. Just saw it tonight and was REALLY impressed. Everything I wanted it to be and more actually. Jackie Chan is amazing...one of his best English speaking roles....ever.
Great Kung Fu, and some really great lore behind the ancient martial art. Beijing is a fantastic backdrop too. Good stuff all around. Immensely enjoyed by myself and my girlfriend.

So you are actually trying to tell me I should watch this? I saw the original and hated it by the way.

If you hated the original you should definitely watch this...it departs from the original and takes everything that was campy about the original and makes it real and better.
@ RLY: Actually we were at the Drive-In...and the second movie was The Bounty Hunter with Jennifer Anniston....you do the math. LOL!
