Wait till N:TW is cheaper, Gothos. It is much, much better AI- and diplomacy-wise.

Looks as though Shogun2:TW has been confirmed as the next game - the Empire page on facebook just posted something about it. If I wasn't currently using my phone, I'd post the link.

oh god, I really suck at this game. I tried playing medevil 2 online and got beat really badly.I have double the cash to start and he ended up killing my whole force well I killed half of his.

Awww, I would have preferred a Rome 2, but Shogun 2 will still be awesome.

also, I haven't gotten to play Empire yet, but the diplomacy AI in MEdieval 2 sucked too. Thank got there there was a Pope I could just bribe to make it all okay.

hell, one time i've convinced a Danish pope, with a college of Cardinals stacked at least a half with Danes, to declare a crusade on Copenhagen, since I was at war with Denmark at the time.

Well the pope is doing what best for christendom, I think your armies marching on rome itself is classed as bad for christendom.

ABout battles against other players I've only done it twice, one time was for medieval 2, as scotland he was england, I won by charging his flank, he was a bit arrogant thinking that as it was all his heavy units he would win the battle, of course they got slaughtered to a man.

The second battle was rome, I was roman, he was selucid empire, that wasa brilliant battle, I had destroyed one of his units of elephants before they could do too much damage, then his main force engaged me up a hill.It was pretty even until his reserve force of one elephant unit was unleashed on the battle field when all my forces were commited to destroying his army. Looking back now the two catupult units i had were a bad purchase. Two more archer units would have been a better investment.

Fighting battles you need to know what the enemy will field as his strongest force so that you can come out with your strongest force, or a force that is well adapted to face the challenge.

I used to have entire legionary arnies in my first playthrough, went through the guals and the spanish and the germans as the julii, it was the britons that taught me a welll balanced force is better.

Hence a roman force is a general, 4 units of cavalry, 4 units of archers and 11 units of infantry (two or maybe three are elite infantry).

The AI isn't the whole problem - there's also the very, very limited number of diplomatic options. The strategic level almost doesn't exist in this game. I'm seriously considering trying out Europa Universalis III instead.

Playing Europa Barbarorum in RTW. I don't think I could ever get tired of this game, even if the vanilla version is grossly inaccurate.

/classics complaint

Completely dominating as the Romani. The Greeks are crumbling before my legions and the Aedui and Averni are mere distractions at this point. Haven't yet gone down into Afrika or Hispania - will do that soon though, once Greece is all mine and I'm rolling in money.

*shrugs* It's not too difficult if you don't get overconfident. In the vanilla version it was almost impossible to lose as the Romans if you had even a rudimentary grasp of tactics. The only challenges came in the steppe warriors - horse archers, chariots and such. In this mod your units aren't powerhouses, but are still generally superior (except for the Greek phalanx of course), so it's more a matter of tactics than just buttfucking the opposition with your awesome stats.

Oh, and I always over-prepare for my campaigns, so it's easier. In the vanilla version I used 5 whole stacks to conquer Italy , for instance (as opposed to their 2 and a half). I find in VH/VH the best bet is just to bleed the factions dry and develop your economy first - against the Greeks have a strong enough navy to hamper their trade, but not enough so it's a financial drain. Also, since the AI doesn't do sea invasions often, it's just a matter of developing your economy first, slowly upgrading your armies and holding off the barbarians to the north, and then you are made in the shade, really. Once you have a strong enough economy to support multiple stacks, it becomes wayyyy easier.

Haven't tried the non-Romans on this yet, but the Greeks in Total Realism (and the Pontics and Gauls I think) were much more of a challenge. Damn Ptolemaics... :laughing:

If CA are just announcing Shogun 2 now, what are we looking at for a release do you think? (NA) Summer 2012?

They say 2011 on the site, and that is also what SEGA dumped into my mailbox. I expect a november release, in time for christmas.

The only thing I am skeptical about is the hero units. Sounds a bit too Warcraft-esque for my tastes...but who knows, maybe it will turn out better than expected.

I think they will differ not too much from the Kensai of the first Shogun, who were lawnmowers with 12 hit points or so as opposed to the 1 of a regular sprite - but they could be stopped dead in their tracks if you did it right. Basically, Rome's and M:TW2 elephant units were not too different from the kensai, they just had more models and required more space in your formations.

It's only just been announced, but they've been working on it for quite a while already, by the sound of it, hence it being a bit sooner than might be expected.
