How does Paran find out about Laseen's cull of the nobility, Tavore's promotion to Adjunct, and Felisin's imprisonment? I seem to remember it being mentioned to him, but I can't remember where.

Dujek tells him, fairly early on.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Illy's right. It's within the first 100 pages.

Quote

The veteran studied Paran's face for a moment, then sighed. 'We've received news
from the empire, Captain.'
'How, sir?'
Dujek shrugged. 'Nothing direct, of course, but our sources are reliable. Laseen's cull
of the nobility proved… efficient.' He hesitated, then said, 'The Empress has a new
Adjunct…'
Paran slowly nodded. There was nothing surprising in that. Lorn was dead. The
position needed to be filled. 'Have you news of my family, sirr
'Your sister Tavore salvaged what she could, lad. The Paran holdings in Unta, the
outlying estates… most of the trade agreements. Even so… your father passed away,
and, a short while later, your mother elected… to join him on the other side of Hood's
Gate. I am sorry, Ganoes…'
Yes, she would do that, wouldn't she? Sorry? Aye, as am I. 'Thank you, sir. To be
honest, I'm less shocked by that news than you might think.'
'There's more, I'm afraid. Your, uh, outlawry left your House exposed. I don't think
your sister saw much in the way of options. The cull promised to be savage. Clearly,
Tavore had been planning things for some time. She well knew what was coming.
Nobleborn children were being… raped. Then murdered. The order to have every
noble-born child under marrying age slain was never made official, perhaps indeed
Laseen was unaware of what was going on—'
'I beg you sir, if Felisin is dead, tell me so and leave out the details.'
Dujek shook his head. 'No, she was spared that, Captain. That is what I am trying to
tell you.'
'And what did Tavore sell to achieve that… sir?'
'Even as the new Adjunct, Tavore's powers were limited. She could not be seen to
reveal any particular… favouritism - or so I choose to read her intentions…'
Paran closed his eyes. Adjunct Tavore. Well, sister, you knew your own ambition.
'Felisin?'
'The Otataral Mines, Captain. Not a life sentence, you can be sure of that. Once the
fires cool in Unta, she will no doubt be quietly retrieved—'

I found this quote by Dujek to be entirely naive, which surprised me coming from him. Wasn't Felisin sent to the Otataral Island ... never to return??

Tavore's plan was always to send her there, protected by Baudin, and then once time had passed to take her out quietly. It was a ruse so that she wouldn't have been accused of partiality and wouldn't have lost her post as Adjunct. Dujek, and possibly others, figured it up but then 7C rebelled and hell went loose.

Ah, I must've misremembered, I had thought Baudin was working a different angle as a former Talon (?) BTW, wasn't he the son of the final remaining Sword in NOK (forgot his name)?

As far as I recall Baudin wasn't old enough to have been a Talon. How ever his father was a Talon and he trained his son. Or maybe I am miss remembering.

Anyway, none of the Swords were Talons were they?

(keep in mind this is the MOI forum, may want to spoil any further discussion on that subject)

The info on Baudin's father comes from HoC, so yeah, 'tis a spoiler.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Baudin himself states that most of the Talons are either old or drooling or both, then goes on to say that a few first sons inherited their secrets. (DG 449) So it would seem that what ever Talons still active are the children of the survivors, those who the Claw didn't kill.

The reason Baudin didn't pull her out of the Mines was stated during DG, he said something like "You can't pull someone out who doesn't want to go." - After she had become addicted to the Durhang and fallen for Beneth.
"As for the game, I surrender consumed by hopelessness. Kruppe, I now believe, will never play his card, thus leaving us trapped in the unlikely world of his recollections and reminiscences, potentially for ever."

I realize this is DG stuff, but Temper is who I was assuming Baudin's father was ... it came from something Baudin said when Felisin, Heboric and the mage rather banished him from their company when they were treking across the desert and trying to avoid the whirlwind (I think). I don't have a copy handy, but I believe he said something to the effect that his father had been there during that 'NOK's ... perhaps he was refering to someone else, tho--

No, Temper is not Baudins father.

Thanks lobo, it would be absolutely inexplicable, reading practically any other series, to get so many names, places and events mixed up -- but w/ the Malazan world it has become all too commonplace in my reading of it... :)
