That's pretty much what I pictured in my head while reading the books. Well done.

Now only regular and light infantry are missing.
Could you do them please!

Nice indeed!

For the Heavy, I'd make the kite shield a bit broader - around 6 inches each side.

That's exactly what I was thinking - the shield doesnt look wideenough to cover such a large guy.

Other than that, pics looks stunning. I like the seasoned marine.

You're right about the shield, it doesn't really seem shield-wall material.
But aren't Heavies the shock troops in the malazan army? I always thought the regular infantry formed the shield line and the heavies jumped from behind their backs, armed to the teeth, after the shields locked.
If you fight like this, a lighter kite-shield seems a better option.

Great art by the way, the marine looks awesome

The trouble with someone saying “shield wall” it’s a bit of a misnomer.

For example the Romans RARELY put forward a locked shield wall in the manner of the Franks or a Hoplite formation. Its documented that a Roman “shield wall” had a fighting gap between each Legionnaire of approximately 1 yard either side. This not only allowed the trooper to fight effectively giving room to move, counter and strike without fear of hitting the person to their side but also to allow fresh Legionnaire’s to move rapidly to the front line, which they did at very regular intervals.

If we assume the Malazan legions use a similar form of fighting…most of the time…then a kite shield is more than acceptable, though it of course wouldn’t be a kite shield of a style initially put forward (which is more a mounted troop version), it is stated in the novels that it’s a kite shield so why not stay with that, top much broader of course.

I’ll also add that, infantry fighting with Kite shields ARE able to form a linked shield wall just by tipping/twisting the shield itself 25-30 degrees. In fact, it’s one of the better shields for infantry fighting when used like this as the tail protects your leading leg and foot and the broad top protects your head and shoulders as well as upper body but the narrowing allows you room to stab your sword forward easily.

Yes…I have used both a kite shield and a tower shield in simulated medieval re-enactment combats.

Had to mention them :). Now, I'm wondering what they look like. I always imagined them in armor similar to the bonemold armor from TES III.

Funny, I also think of Morrowind when I picture the Moranth. Although I think of the chitin armor, not the bonemold. Like this here:

The Moranth aren't exactly like that, of course, but I think its pretty close, as far as style and material.

I like that - my only thought is they are a lot broader - almost double the width? For some reason, that's what I think of when I read about them
