Didn't Kuru Qan say something along the lines of how they deflected the Beast Ritual when its power affected the colonies and in so doing ended up turning all the Jheck into Soletaken? If that's the case, it doesn't really matter much whether the Jheck were around pre-HFE (which, it seems, they were). By the time the Beast Ritual came about no doubt they had trading dealies going on with the HFE colony and there was intermingling of species and culture and more. I wonder if they were living in the ice wastes before the HFE showed up, though.

I believe the errant says the Lethari drove the Jeck out to the wastelands to avoid the fate of the First Empire. But I think he insinutes that the jeck were Lethari citizens that partook in an "off-campus" ritual similar to what was happening in the First Empire.
