also, and this is something i could be wrong about, is kalam the only claw assasin without magic skills ?
i seem to recall that he could sense warrens and their type, but aside from that ?
i don't understand how he won against magic user assasins.

Well in TBH he had an otataral knife as for his first visit in Malaz Island it's basically stated that the heavy reliance on magic had made the Claw weak and dulled their potential. Kalam was simply extremely ingenious and took advance of this. Plus he's strong as a bull.

so glad Pearl is dead.  If he were brought back, I would have to consider quitting the series.

But my impression is the same as "Lister of Smeg".

(spoilers and such below, maybe, possibly, likely and such ...for all those who might want to point to it, i'll save you the trouble)

i liked pearl more than kalam.
to be honest i never understood the value of kalam, i mean yeah, he took out 7 guys alone and barely survived, but so what ?
he was a dead weight character, needed to go out.
pearl on the other hand was the guy on the other team you could always hope would come to, cross over to the good side ...
it's a shame he wasn't given the chance, by a righteous
Spoiler
.

Yep, he want all way to Lassen´s corpse trick, was offered Claw Headmaster chair, protected Tavore from score of Hands, got rid of score of claws, captured Korbolo Dom...

Yep, his actions in MBoF was clearly overestimated loser´s work :)
Try read better, young padawan:) (part why he was special and pwned magic users was many times and strongly undelined)

laseen's corpse ?
the majority of the protective ambrella flight back to the ships was made by t'ambre the eresal.
she walked after being stabbed repeatedly !
kalam was a gifted fighter of course, decades of being on the job.
but other than that i pretty much stand by my words.

He means the corpse through which Laseen talked to kalam in DG.

And yes Kalam had the help of T'amber/Eres'al plus Tavore's otataral sword plus his otataral knife but in DG he was completely alone, wounded in the side, no otataral and used as weapons whatever he found(including a mad dog). This against what could be called an army of assassins. And he was winning.

Kalam was a very gifted assassin. Unfortunately, he was also IMO one of the dullest characters to read about in the entire series. I never really got the sense that he had any sort of personality beyond being a badass assassin. Pearl was far more interesting with real internal conflict. And his love story made far more sense and had a much greater poignancy than Kalam and Minala.

Well T´Amber worked as meat shield, try re-read, he made 2/3 of killings :p

But to answer - why he was so high in others eyes? He was flexible. He didnt need magic, he could kill many skilled opponents just because of his ability to brutally improvise. No petty magic tricks, no waiting for warren invocation etc. He used enviroment, he used his strenght and he always survived - and his targets didnt. So it makes him top assassin...he doesnt have to be beutiflly nimble and magic wielding...he just kills how his body and surroundings limits.

And thats the main reason why most of Claw sucked. And yeah, i partly pity Pearl...but he was weak (muehehe...thats sonds pretty Emperorish).

I think in both cases Kalam's skill was notched down a bit by Laseen viewing the Claw due a cull, bloated in numbers and Topper as head of the Claw being on a bit of a downward spiral in his tower?

Kalam's just from the Rallick Nom school of Assassin-in-ing - Otataral and you know, pop into an Azath sometime.

Well, since you're all wildly speculating, I might as well throw in Pearl of Midnight Tides. There.
If there were no smart people others wouldn't feel inadequate.

Right?

Pearl of Midnight Tides? You mean Lilac?

(Besides, she obviously meant Bluepearl)

Anybody want an actual connection between Pearl, Lostara, and Dust of Dreams?

Pearl, the Malazan Claw was also known as: Salk Elan.

Lostara, Tavore's aid is marching towards Kolanse with the Bonehunters.

Kalyth, Destriant of the K'Chain Che'malle is of the Elan Plain, which borders Kolanse.

Coincidence of course, but my how they add up in this series.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

And to add to that, four of the letters from Kolanse spell ... Salk! Excellent. Everything is falling into place.

Did anyone factor in the DG moment where Pearl and Yil get their hands dirty on the Chain of Dogs? Pearl going into his warren using a trick where he raises his hands above his head (like Quick Ben does mid-K'Chain Scrap). Yil must have seen Quick do this and thought to herself that it might be Pearl... Keep in mind, she had to kill this guy herself, she is likely hoping (foolishly) that it might be him returned. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder yo.

I will try to find a reference however I am at work and DG is at home.

Maybe the white light from the giga-volt is 'pearl' in colour and she's simply ooing and awing at the radiance of the blast.

Done.

Honestly, if Salk Elan and Kolanse had actually matched up letter for letter, I would have peed myself.
