working my way through the short stories, read Back Up, Even Hand and now Harrys Day Off and have to say they are all great with Harrys Day Off topping the bill, more amusement than further story developments/hints but loved reading it!

an amusing revelation from Harrys Day Off about his reading habits...

I was gonna say. I've been vigilantly checking the bookstore almost daily in case there is another early Butcher release like CHANGES which arrived on the shelves of my bookstore 2 weeks early. Sadly, no such luck with Side Jobs yet. Sigh.

Heorot is another fine piece of short writing where you learn a little about Gard and... her history!

Enjoyed every one so far, makes me want to go back to the main series and read again!

I'm glad someone resurrected this thread, otherwise I would have completely missed Side Jobs. So it's now preordered, thanks guys.

Is the Marcone short story in this too?

Quote

Side Jobs is an anthology book set in Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files series, an ongoing series about wizard detective Harry Dresden. It will contain the following short stories:

  • Restoration of Faith and Vignette
  • Something Borrowed
  • It's My Birthday Too
  • Heorot
  • Day Off
  • Back Up
  • The Warrior
  • Last Call
  • Love Hurts
and a new novelette exclusive to the anthology:

  • Aftermath - which takes place 45 minutes after Changes and is told from Karrin Murphy's point of view. She must help find a kidnapped werewolf.

Nice Dresden fix for those of us who haven't read the stories before. Really liked the one about Michael, but then he always was one of my favourite characters. Aftermath was not one of the best, but still fun.

Underwhelming in the extreme I'd say... Still it had a few moments, Marcone/Gard and when Bill? asks if Dresden had anything to do with the vampires.

Ironically, one of the best short stories is not in Side Jobs. Even Hand is superb with Marcone's POV.

We need one thread about all the short stories.

Aftermath + Even Hand gives some obvious hints about what's coming.

I thought the story itself was only 'ok but Gard was interesting. Tho i can't say her characterization was entirely consistent with her apperances elsewhere.

Am i missing something? If aftermath is exclusive to SIDE JOBS and it's not out yet how did you two read it?

I agree EVEN HAND is miles ahead of most of the other shorts.

The usual, some stores aren't too particular about dates.

Same generally get most books I buy when they become avilable not when the set date is hence 2-3 weeks early at least...

Still Side Jobs is damn questionable if one has read everything but Aftermath. Butcher just ain't the same working short stories...

It's sort of a completist thing too. I can skip anthologies full of crap, but a collected set of Dresden stories by Butcher, i must needs own.

Tho that said, HEOROT and THE WARRIOR are somewhat important. Far from critical, but there are bits in there that do become relevant.

And the beer story is just plain fun. :)

Agrees...now they are in the bookshelf instead of diverse lent/net-read stuff :p

Even the tiniest piece of dresden is something until we get ghost stories chapters :)

Just picked my copy up from the local Indigo baby! My fave thing about SIDE JOBS so far? It's got a matte cover (still a bit metallic, but at least its not glossy like SMALL FAVOR, TURN COAT and CHANGES were), and it's THICK! Probably about as thick as CHANGES was.

My brain pulped just thinking about sitting down with it...

WOOT!

I imagine BACK-UP takes up a fair chunk of that, being a full novella as opposed to the various short stories.

Abyss, actually BACK UP takes up surprisingly little space and it's actually AFTERMATH that takes up the most (it looks to be nearly 100 pages and is the last thirdish of the book)

Um also...I know I should be a good little Dresdenite and read each story through from the beginning, but is it wrong that part of me wants to start with the last one AFTERMATH that takes place 2 hours after CHANGES??!?!!??!

Oh man....and the jonesing begins.....that sweet, sweet Dresden-crackery....

Yeah, I've read Backup before and I was surprised by how short it is. It's shorter than a lot of "short stories" I've read.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
―Gene Wolfe, The Citadel of the Autarch
