Richard, there is more to it, but based on your comments I doubt you would appreciate it or find it worth your time. You can always just try book 2 though. Some people find that better as it's not as cliche as EotW.

Well... I guess I could try them all - I am most definitely going to reread MBOTF first though.

I remember from my times at WoT boards an interview in which Jordan said that he doesn't intend to resolve all the plot threads... few of those he might write about in additional books. What can I say? Go RJ!

Ah RJ to my knowlege has never said that The only additional books he is writing are the prequals and mb an encyclopedia. Any plot threads left unrelsolved after book 12 will remain so.

RJ quote:
quote:
Read and find out. What I consider the major story lines will be resolved. There will be a number of minor story lines that will not be resolved, for the simple reason that there is no point to any real world where everything is resolved. That's always something that has irritated me about some novels--that you reach a point at the end of the book, and everyone's problems have now been solved, and all of the world's problems have been solved. I get the feeling I could put these characters and this world on a shelf and put a bell jar over them and go away. There's nothing left there alive.

I still stand by what I said, I just acknowledged that not every soldier falls into this category. There are plenty who have the skills and intelligence but there are even more rednecks who join the army rather then shovel s*** on a farm in Louisana for the rest of their life. That was the analogy I was trying to impress upon you all.

@DD - We've all seen how inept the officers can be, and that is a whole different story entirely. The classic "nobles are retards, peasants make better leaders" approach. Which is fine and dandy in my view because not all the nobles Erikson writes about are idiots.

Keep it with you at all times. If you use it for any of the following, it will be a justified expense:

Top Ten uses for a purchased Hardcover of Crossroads of Twilight:

10] Fight off muggers;
9] Tear out pages and stuff under shirt for insulation;
8] Pad your crotch/bra;
7] Switch dustcover for the dustcover of the US version of GotM - actually an improvement;
6] Disclipline a pitbull;
5] Hockey padding;
4] Second base;
3] Use to make short actors look taller on TV;
2] Shark repellant;
1] Bookstand to read something worthwhile.

- Abyss, wonders if that's unduly cruel to sharks, pitbulls and hockey pucks.

I've always noticed a certain tendancy of people to speak negatively of anything that becomes overly popular. Once it reaches a certain point, it becomes vogue to hate it rather than praise it.

Why? I don't think it's necesarily the old "Lonely at the top" thing; rather, it seems to be more of a self-aggrandizing gesture. After all, if I'm able to see the faults in what so many others enjoy, that must make me better than them, right?

As I said previously, I don't think Jordan is perfect, or even terribly good based on his recent works. But every fantasy author has their foibles. Honestly, Erikson manages to write every character as if they are a genius. Schemes inside schemes and insights to shame a Budhist monk, even from the lowest of soldiers. Yes, soldiers can be intelligent. But not all of them, not every single character. Every author has their faults like this, and once they get popular enough, it will become "vogue" to start pointing them out.

This has always been a pet peeve of mine. Let someothing become popular enough, and suddenly it's in style to trash it. Bleh. There's a simple truth here that shouldn't be to hard... 95% of the time, things become popular for a reason. Even the best marketing can't save a book if it's honestly nothing but trash.

I finally finished The Great Hunt. It was not easy work. Enjoyable, but quite a few groaners in there. Still, I guess I'll read on at my leisure, which is extraordinarily leisurely.

I read the first one ages ago, and then saw the rest of them going cheaply so bought them all, but not read yet. I have been reliably informed by many members of this forum that that was a mistake.

I have two opinions about Jordan, and it depends entirely on which half of the series you ask me about.

Book 1-6 I felt were engaging, well enough written, and very enjoyable. Granted, even at this point Jordan used to many cliches and was a bit.. loquacious. Still, the story had some strong new ideas (I honestly don't understand those who say there is nothing new here), and enjoyed everything through Lord of Chaos a great deal.

Unfortunately, the scene at Dumai's Wells was the climax of the series up to this point. Everything since then seems to be picking up speed at it races back down the other side of the mountain. Books 7-10 have been full of filler, enough cliches to make everyone forget anything original existed here in the first place (see above opinions!), and so little action as to make me read them in small spurts around other books, just to get them finished. There is a definite line of demarcation between books 6 and 7, and personally I find it difficult to find anything worthwhile from Crown of Swords ownward. I'm hoping Knife of Dreams will change this, but from an author who, in my opinion, has completely lost control of his story, I'm not overly confident at this point.

This is not an accusation towards anyone here, or their Dad, merely a statement of fact.

My sister, who just spent more than a year in South Korea, could tell you some stories about the US soldiers that are occupying Seoul.

They're either homeboys from the hood or rednecks from the farm, allowed to carry their firearm (incl. machine guns) everywhere (and use them if they want), are above the law and cannot be prosecuted for crimes they commit (including theft, assault and rape), and don't display all too much intelligence in their day-to-day affairs outside the base. Of course, they aren't picked 'cause they're bright - they're picked because they will respond properly to the standard US grunt training.

I suppose the US military is easy to pick on, even their upper leaders don't display much brainpower. See: Vietnam and/or Iraq.

Little wonder the US military is one of the most hated organizations in the world.

I don't wear panties.

It may be sloppy to you but there are plenty of people who find that RJ has expalained it enough or provided enough info for the reader to infer what may have caused it.

Ever thought it might just be part of his madness? Or don't you believe RJ has shown that the taint has effected Rand?

On top of the taint, LT's personality, traits, skills etc has been transferring to Rand and what is the one thing LT raves on about the most? Killing his wife.

Combine all that with the fact that all three TR's boys have shown reluctence to harm women which would suggest that it's a TR's cultral thing and RJ has provided plenty of reasons imo for his mental condition.

Anyway I will not rave on about that anymore as it's pointless.

Perhaps Rand is Noble in that he has changed the laws so that the Nobility can no longer abuse the common folk as much as they did before?

yeah, to be honest, the scope of Jordan is no more than any other of that sort of fantasy... continent spanning maybe, but nothing larger than the restPosted Image
