Ha, well so would I. My problem is that I do black and white pencil drawings...I'm not submitting anything because I'm sure they're looking for something colored, which Dolmen has provided, so I don't see much point in me trying haha.

Nice job Nobbs :D...though...I feel I should be worried since she looks like she's going to kill me. :D

I like it very much as well, although I do think the tusks should be a little bigger.
But she does looks like she means business, I think you've done that expression really well and I'd be worried if I met her :D

Well obviously Bubbas shows a lot of talent.

Dolmens is very good, though probably a bit cartoony for my tastes

Nobbs as always is brilliant, i absolutely love the style of your drawings

I initially thought this thread/contest was just a shameless way to get pics of topless green women with knives, but i see now that actual artists amongst us have done an excellent job with this.

I'm a little torn on which I prefer...because both are very well done...but are really both completely different styles. I think I like Dolmen's better because of the wider range of colors, it just looks more appealing to the eye. That being said, I love the killer look in the eyes of the one Nobbs did...she really does look like a "Jaghut Huntress"

That's true...nipples always win points...though the others are a bit more "tasteful", not so much like creepy lady porn :D

I have thus refrained from mentioning the knives, and how they might possibly be of the chaos variety.

I don't think the Tusks on Jaghut are that big - the reason? In all the sections of the books where a Jaghut talks, they are always extremely erudite. Difficult to pull off with a set of massive tusks.

I think they wouldn't be at the corner of the mouth either, it would make more sense if they were the lower canines.

But tusks are not canines. By definition tusks are big sharp bones shooting out of the face, not fangs pointing up/down.

...no?

I think Kormack got it right with his take on Raest fighting Silhana.
The leader, his audience still,
considered their scholarly will.
He lowered his head
and with anguish he said,
"But how will we teach them to kill?"

Here's a description of Gothos' tusks.

Quote

'Huge tusks framed his thin mouth, jutting from his lower lip.

The appelation "huge" could be down to his age as well.. but even so I think they're pretty substantial :D

Thanks very much for the entries so far guys! Very nice indeed :D

Great to see different styles represented so well. Dolmen, I think you've really outdone yourself here - I love this image and I'm not normally a fan of your style so kudos! And excellent work as always Nobbs - the word 'authentic' comes to mind in describing your Huntress.

I'm still holding out for further entries by the way :D

I don't know how difficult it might be to make changes so if it's too much trouble, don't bother but the tusks definitely need to be bigger. For the Huntress, I imagine them to be blunted, maybe half their length cut off and capped in silver - Ganath's tusks are also capped in silver so perhaps it's a common practice among female Jaghut. Anyway, as Urb says, they're not teeth - they are large and they protrude. I'll paste a snip from Komarck's Raest for reference below (though I can't see how he could keep his mouth shut :p). Obviously the Jaghut would need a very robust jaw to support the growth and eventual weight of these tusks and should retain as much mobility in their mouth as possible. To be perfectly honest, there are conflicting quotes regarding Jaghut tusks, with some implying that they originate from within the mouth and others that clearly depict them as jutting from the jaw independently. I think I prefer the latter.

Quote

(Icarium in DoD)

Quote

Their lower jaws bore tusks that rose up to frame the thin-lipped mouths.
(DoD)

I hope that helps with any changes/future efforts and please don't feel like I don't appreciate your efforts - it's an ongoing process and your efforts are invaluable :p

hey Mal, I think those 2 quotes aren't necessarily mutually exclusive, as the second one clearly states "Their lower jaws bore tusks that rose up to frame the thin-lipped mouths."
Framing would imply outside the border of the mouth wouldn't it?

Which sorta ties in with the first one "the tusks jutting from his lower jaw"

Put your thumb and forefinger on the corners of your mouth. Then move straight down to where this vertical imaginary line would intersect the line of the jaw - not the bottom, mind, more like the front "flat panel". I'm thinking this is the point of eruption, and I think it seems to work for Komarck too. Definitely a heavier lower jaw and some major neck muscles and jaw tendons are required to manage that weight.

At least, that's how I see it.

Nice idea on these mini-competitions too. :D

Yeah, I know - my post is misleading. I didn't include any quotes that imply the tusks coming out of the mouth but they do exist:

Quote

Icarium said, smiling, the polished lower tusks sliding into view.
(BH)

Quote

“A bold accusation,” said Ivindonos, his tusks bared in anger.

'bared' implies that they could be hidden from view.

and there's more, I'm just now choosing to ignore them ;p

perhaps there is a distinction between Jagh (sp?) and Jaghut, and SE is using the word tusks a bit loosely there (adding some poetic flavour to the sentence, emphasising how they are some massive fangs located on the lower mandible). I don't remember this Ivondonos though. Was he Jagh or Jaghut?
