At the suggestion of a friend I downloaded the first book on the kindle and absolutely loved it. I am now up to book 4 and I find that I can't get it on the kindle. What is strange is that books 1-3, 6, 7, and 9 are available for purchase on the kindle, but not the entire series. Does anyone know if the rest of the series is in the works for kindle? I'd rather not have half the series in e-book format with the other half as printed copies if possible.

I could consider getting Kindle just for that. Lugging the soon-to-be ten volumes around is impractical, but imagine being able to just start reading anywhere in the series when you feel like it. I guess it's too much to hope for that books are searchable on Kindle? Can you have multiple labled bookmarks for favourite parts?

The first 8 books are available in ePub format from Waterstones.
Go fo Sony Reader PRS-600/900
They support ePub. Kindle doesn't. The ebooks are searchable on Sony Reader. I am not sure about labaled bookmarks but you definitely can have an unlimited number of bookmarks per book, plus you can make notes with a stylist :)

First, for the original poster:

(1) The first book is *by far* the weakest in the series. IIRC, he wrote it around 10 years before the 2nd book, so he had a lot of developing in between. If you liked the first one, you're in for a real treat.

(2) I wrote to Amazon customer service asking this exact question (i.e. when the other books would be available in Kindle format), and never heard back from them.

Second, to the follow up posters that pointed out that the books are available in ePub format:

Thanks! I've been holding off getting a device until I found one that could display this series as well as David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest (which is my favorite book but my wife can't read it because at over 1100 pages it's literally too heavy for her to read in bed). Apparently, both are available in ePub format (though not necessarily from the same stores-- for example, IJ is not available from Waterstones).

Thanks again, I'll be buying a Sony eReader, perhaps as soon as tonight.

The eReader is by far the better of the two, the Kindle isn't really as good, and also has a more limited library...

If you are going to buy one, it's worth going into a Waterstones store to do it if you live in the UK - there are some pretty good discounts from time to time.

Cool!
I love my Sony Reader.
Cannot imagine my life without it. It is always with me in the backpack.

If you buy Sony Reader and think you need a protection for it, you might consider (the simplest and the best from my 3 years of using it point of view) protection:
DVD TIN (To hold a DVD case)
Item No: 011-0025
DVD TIN (To hold a DVD case)
195mm X 140mm X 15mm (no inner)
DVD tin
£0.89 (Excluding: VAT at 17.5%)

Delivery probably around £3.

If you need external portable light you might consider:
Xtraflex2 Dual Sup Led

What actual file format does the Kindle use, out of curiosity?

Prolly shouldn't bother since I don't actually have one - but I read they supported their own officially dickish proprietary format, and didn't support the epub standard. (which is why I didn't buy one)

*edit* I is the stupid. Apparently its ".azw"

On a semi-related note, they really need to release audio book versions of the series, it would do me a treat - crammed like a sardine on a train on the way to work, I just dont have the elbow room for a book often. Audio malazan would be immense.

They use two proprietary formats.
.azw and .tpz (topaz)

.azw is renamed .mobi, but it makes it absolutely incompatible with any ebook reader that supports .mobi.
The DRM has been hacked.

topaz is another kindle format. Smaller number of books are published in this format. It has not been hacked so far, or maybe I am wrong and it was hacked a few days ago. Not sure.

Kindle is pretty much tied to Amazon Kindle ebook shop. You can read .mobi on it but only DRMless. There are no ebook shops who sell drmless ebooks nowdays. So, unless you are into classics, kindle shop only.

Just wanted to add my support for the Sony reader. When I was looking at getting a Kindle, Astra pointed me in the direction of the Sony Reader. I absolutely love it and have no regrets. The fact that it supports multiple formats is a huge bonus in my opinion. I don't like being limited format wise, and using something like Calibre you can easily change books to any format and pop them on your reader. The Sony was one of the best investments I've ever made, I don't know what I did without it. I like it so much I've even purchased them for my loved ones. If you guys were going to consider a reader Sony is the way I would recommend going. They even have a new pocket edition that is slightly more affordable ($200 in Americland/$269 in Canada). It comes in a ton of colours and is similar to the PRS 505. The only draw back to it is the fact that it isn't expandable memory wise, and doesn't play mp3's. That being said, I believe it still holds up to 300 books and I've never played mp3's on my reader anyways.

The fact that the reader supports multiple formats is a huge bonus when looking for something like the Malazan books. It can only be a bonus that you aren't limited to two formats of books when you want to find something. I know most of the Malaz books are avalailable out there, whether its for purchase or through torrent (not saying anyone should go the illegal route). As long as you're not dealing with a Kindle you should be able to get your hands on them.

WOW!

Very impressive prices at Waterstone's.

They sell books in collection of two in ePub format. Such prices can even compensate for DRMinfection...to a certain degree.

Check it out:

A Malazan Book of the Fallen Collection 1 (eBook): Gardens Of The Moon, Deadhouse Gates - £8.57

A Malazan Book of the Fallen Collection 2 (eBook): Memories Of Ice, House Of Chains - £8.57

A Malazan Book of the Fallen Collection 3 (eBook): Midnight Tides, The Bonehunters - £9.80

A Malazan Book of the Fallen Collection 4 (eBook): Reaper's Gale, Toll The Hounds - £9.80

I like the tendency....:)

If anyone's still curious - someone asked about keyword searching on the Amazon Kindle. (I just got a second generation Kindle, and I love it.) You can easily perform word searches, which is the main reason I wanted an ebook reader - I have spent so much time flipping through these Malazan books trying to find past references. You can also have multiple bookmarks, as well as highlighting and notes.

Now back to the original question, I was saddened and surprised to find out that three of the Malazan books aren't available for Kindle (my pre-purchase spot checks just hit the available ones). If anyone hears from Amazon about when/whether they will be, I'd really love to know!!

Well, other than the obviously major weakness of missing a few Malazan books, I don't feel limited by the Kindle. Several places have .mobi versions of books now. (For Kindle users, this Amazon forum link lists sites with books that can be used on Kindle http://www.amazon.co...=Tx15UAKRX5252A - I especially use www.webscriptions.net for sci-fi).

Just remember, .mobi books that can be used on Kindle have to be DRMless. It means that besides Baen (and maybe a few others small publishers that I don't know about) only free public domain books in .mobi format can be used on Kindle. For example you cannot buy ebook in .mobi format on BooksOnBoard and read it on Kindle.
