Does anybody have a link where to get a good selection of books for free?

Try the Baen online library. A decent collection of readable books. I dunno if they're Kindle-friendly, but you can read them on a computer.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

What type of books?
Only Two Things Are Infinite, The Universe and Human Stupidity, and I'm Not Sure About The Former.

Fantasy and scfi for the most part, but any genre. I would prefer some modern stuff.

Modern stuff - free? It would be a problem if you are after legal copies.

Some freebies:
Smashwords
Baen
Baen's relative with a few freebies and all book are DRM free
Gutenberg
Feedbooks

You can also visit Mobileread Forum
There are lots of classic books from Gutenberg converted into ebook friendly formats, such as .epub, .lrf, .mobi

Another fun thing about the Sony Readers(at least for my PRS 300) is that you can convert .cbz Comic Book archives to .lrf and read them on the device. Not so good for North American comics but great for manga because of the page size. I still haven't found a way to reliably convert pdfs to epub but Calibre does have the best results. It would probably work better if I learned how to use regular expressions.
