KABLAAAM and sorcery?! I'm totally gonna see it. Looked like they've stolen some effects from Daywatch, though...

I dunno. For every decent flick Cage makes, you have to sit through 4 or 5 crapfests.

Is this based on a book?
O xein', angellein Lakedaimoniois hoti têde; keimetha tois keinon rhémasi peithomenoi.

No, it's based on a poem of the same name by Goethe, I believe.
Antiquis temporibus, nati tibi similes in rupibus ventosissimis exponebantur ad necem.
Si hoc adfixum in obice legere potes, et liberaliter educatus et nimis propinquus ades.

I do hope they use Dukas's music -- it wouldn't be the same without it!
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

Sort of reminds me of Bullet Proof Monk, only nerdier... oh and with a ton more awesome effects and crazy events. Basically magic instead of martial arts.

Watched this earlier today.
Not an amazing movie experience but not that bad either.
I read somewhere that you should go in to watch this like a bad Harry Potter film. Basically a kids movie with not so great characters, story or special effects. I'll say this is partially correct.
The story is mediocre. It's just a rehash of a hundred other young hero coming to grips with his new powers/ faith/destiny/what ever. And it's not done particularly well. The opening is awful. Like something out of a TV film. And the introduction of our Hero and the way things become is almost as bad. But from there on in, when the grown up character is introduced and the good and evil sorcerors start throwing punches it becomes much, much better.
All the characters in this film were well cast in my opinion, all 7 of them, perhaps with the exception of the evil apprentice, he was awful. But the Nerdy apprentice, Cage and Molina were all great. When ever Molina or Cage were on screen, it really shined, both of them did a damn good job. Great lines and great chemistry.
The special effects were also awesome. Especially the mirror stuff and the dragon were hilarious.
I think the only thing that really hampered this film (besides the useless manuscript) was that it seemed to be pulling its punches. I was expecting more bad guys, maybe some evil henchmen, and I was surprised that the final showdown wasn't more flashy. The ending was less spectacular than the earlier battles between Molina and Cage and the Nerdy hero and the Chinese sorceror.
Generally, I suspect that this film may have had some budget cuts that meant that the director couldn't go as crazy as he wanted.
Still, it was worth the ticket and I wouldn't mind a sequel.

Yeah, definitely agree that I was expecting more from the evil folks, and how few there were. The Grimhold should have had more than just the asian sorceror and the orphan girl between Horvath and Morgan if Balthazar was hunting them for a thousand years, plus the Orphan girl does just about nothing.
Whatever, I liked it and I think others will too as long as you're not expecting some epic saga out of it, but rather are there for the entertainment of it.

I thought it was an average movie, worth watching once but that's about it.
The problem with most fantasy movies is that they cater to young audiences. Most 0of them are about some kid who discovers magic and then must save the world form the villain.
We need more movies like Lord of the Rings .
stuff like, Malazan, Wheel of Time, Warhammer, Forgotten Realms, A song of Ice and Fire...
and not Sorcerer's Aprentice, Twilight, ...
