Is there a book or a series that you reread on a regular or semi-regular basis?

I ask because I'm starting on Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun again after having read it for the first time last December, and I'm thinking I might make it an annual thing.

The only other book I've reread regularly is Richard Adams' Shardik. It's my favorite book, and I've read it 10 times since middle school, including earlier this year for the first time since 2005.

I know a lot of people will probably answer with the MBotF, but the series is too big for me to reread regularly. I contemplated rereading it this year, but realized it would take me the majority of the year, and honestly that's too much time to devote to a series I'd already read twice in the 2 years prior to this one.

I've never re-read Malazan all the way through in one go, though I have read all the books several times.




Apart from that, books I tend to find myself coming back to occasionally include American Gods, Player of Games, Lies of Locke Lamora, and Perdido Street Station. There are very few that I can re-read before having forgotten at least the major twist in the book, but they do tend to be good ones.

The closest I've come to a re-read is when I went through the Wheel of Time, again. Sure, I only made it to tPoD until something else caught my attention enough to pull me away, but I did re-read most of the series.

I'm itching to re-read Malazan for the first time. I've re-read GotM twice, but never any of the others more than the first time.

I also intend to do a WoT re-read once the entire thing starts finishing up. I will also re-read Name of the Wind before Wise Man's Fear comes out in mmpb.

I've re-read the first 3 Black Company novels before I was able to grab the rest of the books in the Black Company series and finish them off and I'll probably re-read the first 2 Instrumentalities books before Cook finishes that series off(whenever that happens - haven't heard any word for over a year about the 3rd Instrumentalities)


Good on you, Saltman, that you can re-read Book of the New Sun. I got about 3/4 through the 3rd book in that quadrology and it just got too slow and slogged along. I can't bring myself to finish. It's been sitting in my cubicle at work for a month, trying to entice me to read it on my lunch break, but I just can't do it.

I've reread quite a bit actually. The only ones I do regularly are the Dark Tower, LOTR, Harry Potter, and MFOTF. I reread a lot once though, especially if a later book in the series is coming out.

I have re-read DUNE by Frank Herbert many times (only the original one mind you). Same with LORD OF LIGHT by Roger Zelazny. Both books are dense enough that i can take my time and enjoy the subtleties of the storytelling.

I have re-read THE STARS MY DESTINATION by Alfred Bester as well many times. But that is much shorter, and something i know i'll finish really quickly.

Also, THE PLAYER OF GAMES by Iain M Banks is one I enjoy every few years.

Of course I do a recap of selected Malazan books on a regular basis, usually in anticipation of a new release.

These are books that I have re-read quite a bit.

Also, at any given time in the year, I am usually reading something out of Malazan series. The scope is so big. I make new revelations every time I read. I don't necessarily read a whole book or books, instead, I will read Karsa's storyline etc.

Malazan books, especially MoI, DG, GotM, MT, HoC. A Song of Swords also gets a few rereads, as well as going through and reading the Jon chapters only. WoT used to get a crapload of rereads until Winter's Heart (uggh!). Butcher's Alera books have been though a couple, and the Prince of Nothing series has had at least 3 rereads that I recall (Kellhus fascination).

I reread a lot of my books, just because grabbing something out of my collection is easier and cheaper than getting something else. It also depends on if a new book in the series is being released.Some of my usual rereads are...

Though now that you mention Shardik, I find myself wanting to read it. I have a copy but never got to it. The high praise of favorite book is enough to get me going.

Due to my Ph.D. research I had to re-read a few series repeatedly over the last four years:
The Riftwar books by Raymond E. Feist (Magician, Silverthorn and A Darkness at Sethanon)
The Empire Trilogy by Raymond E. Feist and Janny Wurts (Daughter of the Empire, Servant of the Empire and Mistress of the Empire)
The Six Duchies Trilogy and the Liveship Trilogy by Robin Hobb
The Belgariad and The Malloreon by David Eddings
All the Dark Elf books by R.A. Salvatore
The Drenai books by David Gemmell

I think I have read through each of these at least 4 times, although some a great deal more than that.

Magician by Feist is one of the books that I have re-read on a regular basis, even before doing research on it. Same with Waylander and Legend by Gemmell. I am gearing up for a Malazan re-read as soon as my Viva is over.
I used to re-read Tolkien's LotR every year but that has fallen to the wayside recently.

Really regular rereads (say, once every year) are LotR and Joseph Fouché by Stefan Zweig.

But then I often tend to grab a book from my shelf whenever I feel like it. Most often I end up with MbotF, so I reread that quite regularly, though not in a particular order.

I often reread my books but rarely a complete series. For example, I've read all MBotF various time, but I went through it all in one only once.

I often mean to do re-reads, but there are so many books in my to read pile that I rarely get around to it. The one book I have read time and time again is Marion Zimmer Bradley's Mists of Avalon. I've read it so many times in fact, that I actually wore my original copy out and had to buy another. I've also read all of Charles Dickens works several times over. He's my favourite classics author, and every once in a while I feel like sitting down for a good read of his stuff. Series wise I've re-read GGK's Sarantine Mosaic three times, but that's about it. There is so much new material coming out, and so many things I want to read that despite my best intentions, re-reads don't happen and aren't likely to any time soon.

Same here. Also like to reread USE OF WEAPONS. Like the first author, giving real thought to rereading Wolfe: THE BOOK OF THE LONG SUN. It's a wonderful work.

LOTR, over and over again. GGK, and (don't hit me) CS Lewis. Also guilty pleasure David Gemmel. Will probably start over with Glen Cook when I've read all he's written. MBOTF for sure, you can pretty much grab a book at random and start reading, almost better on re-reads cause you're not just dying to find out what happens next and digest how everything connects. You remind me I have to re-read Shardik, great book but I think I was too young the first time I read it. Watership Down I've read several times.

Edit: forgot Vance, who you can read any number of times, and Wolfe who you basically have to re-read to understand even what really happened in the story.

I haven't re-read the entire Malazan series yet, but (like a lot of others here) I've been meaning to! It's just...a lot to take on, I guess.
What I have re-read tends to vary depending on my mood. I've re-read GRRM's "Song of Ice and Fire" series, Guy Gavriel Kay's "Fionavar Tapestry", most of Anne Rice's books, LOTR, Margaret Atwood's "A Handmaids Tale", WOT...and so on.

At the moment I'm re-reading Colleen McCullough's "First man in Rome" series. I'm on book 2, "The Grass Crown." It's my bus book, in that I only read it on the bus going to/from work. It definitely helps pass the time, and it's always fun to see who's trying to peek at your book.
