the crossing takes place near the delta of the vathar, at the ford. there is a ridge directly to the north-west of the ford and it rises pretty steeply. the bank is mostly bare on the north side, forested on the south. the battle was less of an actual battle than a contested crossing. the refugees crossed before any of the army except the sappers and a few hundred wickans. the remaining forces of the empire held off korbolo doms army as it came up on their tail. as you know though, dom had some people on the river and on the other side.

dont know if thats any help or not, just thought i'd give it a shot

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Also being that i'm re-reading all the books again would any of you object to making on the most recent book forum an an official battle thread of sorts so that all the battles throughout the novels could have such pretty pictures to illustrate them?

that would be an ambitious project, though completely worthy of somebodys time. maybe it could be a contest?
anyways, here's my stab at gelor ridge, complete with colour guide!

so this chain was being battered from all sides by troops right? I seem to remember moments when the book referred to the 7th or the hissari loyalist as under pressure from Kamist Reloe's forces. Wouldnt that mean that they were surrounded by troops though?

you may be remembering the battle of sekala river, in which there was fighting basically on all sides, involving every force,
at gelor ridge, they might have had a contingent circle around and come at the column from the rear, i cant quite remember

Nice pic ST, especially the color-coding!

From what I recall, Gelor Ridge was more a case of the enemy waiting for them (I think that was Korbolo's forces?). There were enemy forces behind them, as always, (Kamist Reloe's remaining forces before they merged with Korbolo's?), and its quite possible they were raiding the rear, but since Duiker was with the infantry wedge going up the ridge, the focus of the battle from his perspective was on the frontal assault.

But as ST points out, Sekala Crossing was the one where they were basically stuck in a contracting half-circle all around the crossing while the troops/refugees/wounded/livestock rushed through the crossing as quickly as they could.

ah yes, that was it. korbolo sat on the ridge, and the remnants of kamist reloe's army was sniping at the rear

@ d'rek, thanks, i think he's got a good idea about getting together a bunch of these little diagrams. especially for some of the awl battles, they were always kind of confusing to me
