Since otataral seems to be quitte rare, I thought is was a little strange the blade is not mentioned at all in MoI. especially at the end, killing those condors would have been a piece of cake if he still had it. Instead, he had to use his pigsticker

At the end of GOTM, Paran picks up Lorn's otataral blade. Did I miss the part where he loses it again or something?

Spoilers for later books:
Spoiler
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Considering how in MoI Paran had to work with mages and ascendents, and generally in the (admittedly outlawed contingent of) the Malazan army, walking around with a mage killing magic nullifying sword that used to belong to the Empress' Adjunct might not be the bestest idea.
I agree with you tho', there might have been a few points where he was just kicking himself over that.
- Abyss, ...has days like that with a spork...

Paran does imply he lost his sword on the hill outside of Coral, when Quick Ben pulls them into the warren of Ruse to excape magic being sent at them by a Seerdomin. hope this is useful

The sword would not have been all that useful anyway.
Think of Tay or QB or all the other mages.

That's not necessarily his otataral sword, though, could've been just any sword issued from the army.

You know ... I never even thought of that.
But now I'm wondering why isn't there more Otataral weapons. If there's a mine there has to be enough ore. Maybe it'll be discussed more in later books =)

Abyss & Harvester explained it, too many Otataral swords would eliminate the magic of the Mages - including healing

Yes he lost it underwater. So if that's the Otataral blade, it shouldn't come back. I guess it was a standard sword, otherwise he'd make more of a fuss about it.

I would agree with Abyss and Harvester, Even having only one Otataral weapon has shown to have a rather large radius of magic deadening properties. Outfitting an entire army would be beneficial if you were an army completely beret of mages and needed a proper defense. But since mages are so intricately tied into the Malazan Army, to the point where mages are assigned to almost every squad, sometimes even multiple mages to a squad. And with that many Otataral weapons being wielded, you would effectively create the same barrier that Tool created in GotM. Wouldn't be pretty, but interesting it would be.
